The nineties were the golden age of the thriller. Every other week, a star-driven thriller seemed to open in theaters, to the point that everyone took them for granted after a little while, and the genre dried up. Many of the best examples of the genre, like Basic Instinct, Single White Female, Jennifer 8, and others, hold up quite well in retrospect. One of my favourites has always been Jonathan Kaplan’s Unlawful Entry, which I did a Best Movie You Never Saw video about not long ago.
In it, Kurt Russell and Madeleine Stowe play a likeable yuppie couple rocked by a home invasion. A friendly cop, played by the late, great Ray Liotta, helps them out, and soon, he becomes a trusted friend and part of their lives. However, in classic Liotta fashion, he turns out to be a raving psychopath with designs on Stowe, leading to the white-collar...

Slaughterhouse-five will be available on Blu-ray December 3rd from Arrow Video
Billy Pilgrim Lives – From Time To Time To Time…
Past, present and future collide in darkly satirical fashion in Slaughterhouse-Five! Based on Kurt Vonnegut s classic 1969 novel, this tale of time travel and alien abduction emerged as part of a wave of more cerebral science-fiction films in the late 60s to early 70s, elevating the genre beyond the B-movie fare of previous decades.
Upstate New York, 1968. Mild-mannered Billy Pilgrim finds himself unstuck in time . Traveling back and forth across the entire span of his existence, he experiences key events of his life in a random order, including his formative years, the firebombing of Dresden and finally, at some undefined point in the future, his surreal adventures on a distant planet.
Praised by Vonnegut himself for its fidelity to his novel, Slaughterhouse-Five boasts assured direction by George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid...

One of the mandates of my film writing has to always try and uncover gems within in the independent film scene and promote films that might otherwise fly under the radar of audiences and other film bloggers alike. With that mandate comes the knowledge that I could posssibly be subjecting myself to the kinds of movies that, in all honesty, should have remained in the proverbial film closet. But I still approach each and every film I review (and even those that I don’t) with an open mind, in hopes that the next movie will be one that is worth shouting from the rooftops about.

In a recent interview with Daniel Schweiger of Film Music Magazine, the original composer behind Captain America: The First Avenger, Alan Silvestri, ultimately detailed the overall process of scoring the film. Also dotting on influences and scene specifics, including with Red Skull's Hydra, check out the lengthy interview below, transcribed by Peter Hackman. On his passion for occasionally using the brass... "There’s a kind of grandeur that comes with the brass. There are also some very simple logistical and sonic reasons. In a film, every body is fighting for real estate sonically. You have to have the dialogue clear and intelligible. And sound effects have a huge presence in action films in order to create a sense of reality. So you have to find a sound that will live in this sonic environment, which brass often allows. Take for instance the middle of Captain America’s motorcycle chase, when...

Former Fangoria scribe Daniel Schweiger may not be a household name, but fans of the horror genre will know his work in several different media. As a music and picture editor, he cut numerous trailers for Full Moon Entertainment. He’s been in a few great horror films as an actor (most notably as one-half of the comedic duo of hearse drivers in Bubba Ho-tep), and has written liner notes for CD reissues of several classic horror soundtracks in recent years. Schweiger loves the genre, has devoted much of his professional life to it and is more than worthy of a good, old fashioned Fangoria brain-picking…...

Penka Kouneva was born in Bulgaria, but she's been living in the United States since 1990. During this time, she estabilished herself as one of the most reliable orchestrators in the business. She worked extensively with Patrick Williams and now she's one of the regular orchestrators of Cliff Eidelman, Alfons Conde and Steve Jablonsky. Apart from orchestrating, Penka also started a film scoring career which currently includes titles like Chupacabra Terror, The Third Nail and most recently Midnight Movie.
What could you tell us about your musical education?
My mother was a professor of music theory and analysis at the Bulgarian Conservatory of music. I went to a High School of Music, then to the Bulgarian Conservatory (with a degree in Theory). In 1990, I received Mary Duke Biddle Fellowship for Master's degree in composition at Duke.
I got Masters and Doctorate at Duke University where my teacher Stephen Jaffe was exceptonally supportive and encouraging.

UPDATE:BLY director Seth Landau got us up to speed on the revised guest list for the Dark Delicacies signing. Dan Roebuck is out, but in his place comes Jeff Dylan Graham. Jeff has appeared in a number of horror pictures, aside from BLY, including, 100 Tears and Beyond the Dunwich Horror.
In another interesting turn of events, Seth informed us that some actual cult members from the real life Bryan Loves You incident will be on-hand to "monitor" the happenings. This is to guarantee that the cast and crew can go about their business unharmed. Weird, eh?
Bryan Loves You may be based on true events from the early '90s, but the stuff that went on to get this film made is just a bit more odd. Who knew that a film about some dark cult activities in Phoenix could lead to fake casting calls, threatening videos and theft of footage?...
