Tonight, Lifetime will jump on the sentimental trend of reuniting veteran actresses for our giddy enjoyment by airing Ladies of the 80s: A Divas Christmas, a festive romp that stars Loni Anderson (Wkrp in Cincinnati), Morgan Fairchild (Falcon Crest), Linda Gray (Dallas), Donna Mills (Knots Landing) and Nicollette Sheridan (Knots Landing).
The holiday flick from longtime producer Larry A. Thompson (Liz & Dick) follows five soap opera divas as they reunite to shoot the final Christmas episode of their long-running sudser.
“I’ve known all these ladies all these years,” he told Deadline. “We’ve worked together, made movies together, and Donna Mills I’ve managed since Knot’s Landing and I still do. So between managing Donna and being friends with the ladies, I said it might be fun to have all these ladies in a movie. Look, those of you who know me likely already know why I have an affinity for New World Pictures (hint: they’re responsible for a movie I think is really “swellraiser”). But I’ve always wondered what kind of film studio had the gumption to produce a movie at the height of the AIDS crisis that was directed by an openly gay man and revels in kink, incorporates copious amounts of blood, and dares us to indulge in our darker nature? It turns out that for a studio like New World Pictures, this tact was pretty much par for the course. New World’s history is all about taking chances, an approach that would ultimately lead to its downfall.
New World was founded by Roger Corman and his brother Gene in 1970. They distributed their first film, the biker flick Angels Die Hard, in June of that year, but their first...

Although they’re the lesser-known talent behind the onscreen stars, agents and casting directors are the oil that keeps a film, television series, or theater production running. Thankfully, they are given their due each year at the Heller Awards. The 14th annual Heller Awards are right around the corner, hitting the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Thursday, Nov. 10. Presented by the Talent Managers Association (Tma), the awards honor the best agents and casting directors working today. Past honorees include Jeff Witjas, longtime agent of Betty White, Mary Tyler Moore, and others; John Papsidera, whose casting director credits include Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy; Larry Thompson, who represents William Shatner and was agent to the late, great Joan Rivers; Sarah Finn, who cast “The Avengers” and “Guardians of the Galaxy”; and the list goes on. Time and again, Tma has recognized the best of the best, and this year is no exception.

Although the invite states that no performers are allowed, that couldn’t stop Joan Rivers and William Shatner from coming to honor managers, agents, and casting directors at the 12th Annual Talent Managers Association Heller Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sept. 19. The evening began with a musical act and then proceeded to the special awards. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Larry Thompson by two of his clients—Rivers and Shatner. Rivers noted that Thompson bridges old Hollywood and current Hollywood: “What he doesn’t know, he goes out and learns and then he embraces it totally.” She went on to explain the difference between agents and managers, “Agents see you for what you do at the moment; managers see you for what you could do.” Shatner also had words of praise for his manager, but joked about their first meeting when he questioned Thompson: “Why do I need a manager?...

Update, 3:05 Pm: Joan River’s reps haven’t heard anything from anyone at the WGA about the TV host violating union rules and any trial board hearing over her role on Fashion Police. And even if they had, they say the union is going after the wrong party. “Other than a press release, nothing has been filed by the WGA,” River’s personal manager Larry Thompson told me today after the union’s announcement this morning. “We have received no communication, notice or any paperwork from anyone at the union. Joan has stated clearly, and E! Networks has repeatedly reconfirmed that Joan supports the Fashion Police writers who are hired by E! Networks Productions, not her. This is an issue between E! and the WGA. She is on-air talent.” Previously, 8:05 Am: Can we talk? There are more labor problems for Fashion Police. Today host Joan Rivers’ Rugby Productions had complaints filed against it by four more writers on the E! series. The scribes’ latest claims for back pay with the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement adds $400,000 to the $1.1 million that the reality show writers are already seeking in previous filings with the state last week. There are now 12 Fashion Police writers having filed claims against the show. As part of its process, the Dlse will hold hearings to see if in fact Rugby and Comcast-owned broadcaster E! Network are liable to the writers for back pay and penalties. Though Fashion Police is not unionized, the WGA West helped the writers with the legal paperwork today as it did in the complaints with the Dlse the writers filed against E! on April 3. Why would the makers of Liz & Dick want to sue Lindsay Lohan? Her performance wasn't that bad! We kid. But Fox News reported today that Lifetime was gearing up to file suit against Lohan for breach-of-contract, supposedly because she violated a clause in her deal that stipulated she was only supposed to be driven around in her network-provided car during the six weeks of filming. Lindsay Lohan's performance as Elizabeth Taylor was universally panned, but it saw art imitate life to perfection
The howls of outrage over the wretchedness of Liz & Dick, the Taylor-Burton biopic that aired on Lifetime on Sunday night, missed a larger point. Substitute the name Lindsay for Liz – but keep the cigarettes, the booze, the shades, the shaky poses, the pouting and the paparazzi – and it became the life story of a different actress. No acting necessary: the movie was a credible rendering of the Lindsay Lohan story. She could recite the lines straight; they had their own veritas.
"Apparently I was very cool," said Lohan/Liz, retrospectively, at the start of the two-hour movie in a voice that sounded like a full ashtray at 3am.
As in real life, while Lohan's interactions with her romantic lead seemed fake and staged, she sparkled when the paparazzi were around. "Call yourselves journalists?...

After all that hype, Lifetime‘s Liz & Dick drew 3.5 million total viewers last night. The TV movie about the tempestuous love affair between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton is the fourth-most-watched original movie premiere on ad-supported cable this year, drawing 3 million fewer viewers than the 6.5 million who watched Steel Magnolias on the network in October. Almost universally panned, Liz & Dick starred Lindsay Lohan as Taylor and Grant Bowler as Burton. It averaged 1.3 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic and 1.3 million adults 25-54. Lifetime’s Amanda Knox: Murder On Trial In Italy original movie attracted 2.8 million total viewers in February 2011, down from the 5.4 million who tuned in for the network’s The Craigslist Killer in January 2011. She broke into "the business" before she was 10, grew up too quickly on-screen and off, and had many lovers and a shameless stage mom. Myriad health issues -- some self-inflicted, some not. And a loyal inner circle that swears to her heart of gold. So is she Elizabeth Taylor? Or Lindsay Lohan, the talented but troubled starlet who plays the violet-eyed movie star in "Liz & Dick," Lifetime's much-discussed biopic produced by telefilm whiz Larry A. Thompson?

Linday Lohan's "Liz and Dick" movie is set to premiere on Lifetime tonight (September 25th) at 9pm Est. The producers are currently promoting the film, and in the process, using Lohan's troubles to stir up interest. Producer Larry Thompson sat down with Entertainment Weekly and revealed how difficult Lohan made it to have the film insured. "If we couldn't have gotten insurance, there would have been no movie," he explained. "We wound up having to go to Lloyd's of London to get what we called incarceration insurance." At the start of production, Lohan was on probation for jewelry theft. The worry was that she was going to violate her probation and head to jail, which would have ruined the movie and resulted in the loss of a lot of money. Because of Lohan's history, insurance companies haven't been willing to cover Lohan or asking for amounts that no production is willing to pay.

Liz & Dick producer Larry Thompson has suggested that Lindsay Lohan's performance in the television movie will surprise her critics. Thompson admitted to Deadline that Lohan's well-documented personal problems were at times a major worry, but stressed that casting her as Elizabeth Taylor was "the right decision". "It was a challenge to make this movie. I certainly was aware of the risk I was taking hiring Lindsay Lohan," the producer said. "I realize now making the right decision is easier than living with the right decision. But it was the right decision nonetheless." Thompson continued: "In our movie none of the reported madness seeps into the story except when the story asks for it. It was a complicated jigsaw puzzle under the best-case scenarios and then, when you are challenged by new factors, it (more)...

Working with Lindsay Lohan, who is infamous for both her on-set and off-set antics, involved "some serious challenges," according to the producer of Lifetime's upcoming film "Liz & Dick."
"Producing a movie with Lindsay is not for the faint of heart," "Liz & Dick" executive producer Larry Thompson said, according to E! News.
Lohan's troubled past, June car accident and an exhaustion episode all put the veteran producer at financial risk.
"We had serious challenges to deal with due to her probation and her history," Thompson told E! News during a conference call. "Therefore we had to make a deal where there were pages and pages of ‘what if' clauses. There never was a ‘what if she can act' clause. It was about, ‘What if there is a car accident? What if there is a violation of her probation [and she's] incarcerated?' Those ‘what ifs' were plenty. She might be the most insured...

Larry A. Thompson has managed a lot of talent and produced a lot of television over the years, but nothing he’s done before has attracted the kind of attention Liz & Dick has. Set to air November 25, the Lifetime TV movie about the stormy love affair between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton was in the spotlight from the moment Lindsay Lohan was cast as Taylor. Car crashes, filming delays, exhausted crew members and the constant glare of the media hampered the production. Liz & Dick covers the couple’s two marriages, two divorces and career ups and downs. Grant Bowler plays Burton in the film. Lloyd Kramer directs from a script by Temple Grandin scribe Christopher Monger. Thompson talked with me about the trials of making Liz & Dick, hiring Lohan, and his next project on Oprah Winfrey. Deadline: With all the attention on Liz & Dick, this could not have been an easy film to make.

To says there was some drama involved with Lindsay Lohan's upcoming Lifetime biopic Liz & Dick would be an understatement. A big one. "Producing a movie with Lindsay is not for the faint of heart," executive producer Larry Thompson told reporters during a Wednesday morning conference call. "I turned 50 shades of white actually during the production." Even before the film—in which Lohan stars as Elizabeth Taylor—started shooting last summer, though, Thompson acknowledged that hiring the troubled actress came with several strings. "We had serious challenges to deal with due to her probation and her history," said Thompson. "Therefore we had to make a deal where...

She broke into “the business” before she was 10, grew up too quickly onscreen and off, had many lovers and a shameless stage mom. Myriad health issues — some self-inflicted, some not. Oddball friendships and associations. And a loyal inner circle who swear to her heart of gold. So is she Elizabeth Taylor? Or Lindsay Lohan, the talented but troubled starlet who plays the violet-eyed movie star in Liz & Dick, Lifetime’s much-discussed biopic produced by telefilm whiz Larry A. Thompson (Amish Grace, Lucy and Desi: Before the Laughter) and penned by award-winning Temple Grandin scribe Christopher Monger? By now you’ve [...]...

There may be a lot of truth to the idea that Liz & Dick is (one of) the most talked about movie of the year, but I’m not absolutely sure it’s a claim I would feature.
Good or bad, Lindsay Lohan or no, and if you’re the right crowd, Lifetime or no, there’s no denying that the movie takes on interesting subject matter, and is potentially well worth watching just to catch some glimpse into the lives of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Of course, I don’t know that it has anything to say that isn’t well-worn material, but it’s worth finding out.
What do you think about this one, and is the movie, wherever it lands, overshadowed simply by the fact that Lohan is in it? I’d like to know where the public is coming down on this one. Will you watch?...

When I spoke with Larry Thompson, executive producer of Lifetime’s upcoming Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton biopic Liz & Dick, this afternoon for our November cover story on the opulent and much-debated film, he revealed just how deeply connected his screenwriter Christopher Monger is to the project. Seated next to Monger at the 2010 Humanitis Prize awards ceremony, where the Monger-penned HBO film Temple Grandin and Thompson’s Lifetime-produced Amish Grace were both nominated in the 90-minute category, Thompson told him that he was about to embark on a project about Taylor and Burton and asked if Monger would like to be involved. “He looked at me [...]...

It’s the movie they said would never get made thanks to the off-screen antics of its controversial star, Lindsay Lohan — but the newly-released trailer for Lifetime’s upcoming Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton biopic Liz & Dick suggests the project could be irresistible for much more than a just a peek to see if she can really pull it off. Lindsay Lohan might have some vehicular issues to deal with, but she is moving right along with the production of her Lifetime movie, "Liz & Dick."
Now, fans can feast their eyes on the first trailer for "Liz & Dick," featuring Lohan as screen legend Elizabeth Taylor. Lifetime posted the debut trailer on its official YouTube channel on Thursday. The Lifetime made-for-tv movie documents the torrid love affair of Taylor (Lohan) and Richard Burton (Grant Bowler) as they "drink, fight and fornicate." Chalk it up to more Rumors.
Lindsay Lohan has not had a great week. While she dodged burglary charges, there are reports coming out of her time on set of Liz & Dick, and they aren’t good.
CNN reports Elizabeth Taylor’s famous trailer, used on set of Cleopatra, was sold to Angel Alger for $50,000 in June, but as part of the sale agreement, Alger had to rent it out to Silver Screen Pictures to use in the Liz & Dick movie. Alger claims that when she saw it again in July, there was $100,000 worth of damage to it, including broken...

Lindsay Lohan wore violet contact lenses while filming 'Liz & Dick'. New York Post columnist Cindy Adams revealed: 'Lindsay's yellow hair, red hair, auburn hair got dyed dark for the film. 'But what you don't know is, she was fitted with violet-coloured contact lenses.' As well as the physical changes, Lindsay will have spent a lot of time in the wardrobe department during filming as she had a staggering 66 costume changes in the biopic. Movie bosses recently admitted the costumes were a key part of the film. Producer Larry Thompson...

Producer/Manager Larry Thompson, who has his hands full at the moment with the Lindsay Lohan-starring telefilm Liz & Dick, produced by his company, is also about to take out a male-skewing sketch comedy pilot. Thompson has teamed with producer Michael Wilson (Saturday Night Live, Politically Incorrect) on the project. Wilson financed and produced the completed pilot, said to be in the vein of such sketch-comedy shows as The Kids in The Hall, The State and Monty Python’s Flying Circus and described by Wilson as a show “by guys, for guys who like sketch comedy.” The ensemble cast features performers from The Groundlings and the Second City and includes Robert Belushi, Scott Beehner, Cooper Barnes, Sitara Falcon, T’Shaun Barrett, Bruce Wexler, Jo Newman, Mark Gagliardi and Marta McGonagle. The pilot will be shopped shortly by the Gersh Agency.

The good news for Lifetime and the producers of their tabloid headline-making movie Liz & Dick is that it has only about a week of filming left. The bad news is that, as the first two and a half weeks of shooting proved, with Lindsay Lohan as the star, a lot could happen in a week that could impact production. In the last two weeks, filming on the movie was pushed after Lohan crashed her car on her way to the set and when she passed out in her room toward the end of a nightlong shoot. In a tweet, Lohan cited exhaustion “after working 85 hours in 4 days.” When two crew members in the hair department left the production a day later, also claiming exhaustion, Liz & Dick began to attract union attentions. Despite an awkwardly worded statement by SAG-aftra today stressing that “we have thoroughly investigated this matter” and “all applicable penalties will be paid,...
