Younger comic-book fans might be surprised to learn that there was once a time when Marvel Comics was on its last legs and willing to do anything to keep the company afloat. Before underdog blockbusters like the X-Men and Blade films put Marvel heroes back on the map, they were desperately trying to experiment with their comics in order to attract a wider audience.
One such experiment was the Marvel Knights imprint, a collection of stand-alone stories that initially focused on less-marketable heroes and gave artists free-reign to tell unique and more adult-oriented stories unshackled by decades of garbled continuity issues. While these stories didn’t always succeed in revitalizing characters for a new generation (and often contained the worst kind of late-90s/early 2000s edge), they were almost always incredibly stylish and memorable.
That’s why I think it’s very appropriate that Neveldine & Taylor’s film Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance...

Gerard Butler has had a varied career so far, with him playing everything from action leads to rom-com love interests to a singing Phantom of the Opera. But, it has to be said that his most consistently entertaining output falls squarely into the action genre, and as far as Gerard Butler movies go, the action films will always be our favorites… so don’t expect to see The Ugly Truth on this list, but The Bounty Hunter might scrape by. Or maybe not. Let’s see how it goes:
300 (2006)
Perhaps The film that put Gerard Butler on the map for most people, particularly the action and comic book crowds. Butler is in peek physical form here, showing off his bod as the ultimate Spartan warrior and proving that he is indeed quite the leading man. His performance here is commanding, a bit in your face (in the right way), and exactly what the film needed.

Scottish actor Gerard Butler has been headlining some of Hollywood's biggest, most successful, and most talked-about blockbuster releases for three decades. If any 2000s action star has a claim to A-list status, it's him. However, it still feels like not enough people discuss his acting talents.
For most of his career, Butler has prioritized a kind of unapologetically corny and popular cinema that often skews ... controversial, to say the least. Good and campy fun is Butler's bread-and-butter -- whether it's action, romance, adventure, or a musical. The key to appreciating him as a performer is to understand this fact and fall in love with the easy-watching pleasure these movies provide. However, it's also worth noting what deeper dimensions Butler brings to these roles, too. So here's an appraisal of the 12 best Gerard Butler movies. For the unacquainted, these picks will help viewers fall in love with the man's unique brand of crowd-pleasing entertainment.

A reboot feature of “Hellboy,” titled “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” will begin production in March, Millennium Media announced Saturday.
Brian Taylor, who co-directed the “Crank” films and “Gamer” with Mark Neveldine and solo directed the 2017 horror comedy “Mom and Dad,” will helm the picture. Mike Mignola, the creator of the “Hellboy” comics, co-wrote the script with Chris Golden.
The story will follow Hellboy, the summoned demon turned reluctant hero, as he teams up with a rookie agent to uncover a secluded witch community in 1950s Appalachia. The script draws from the comic “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” which debuted in July 2008.
Millennium Media first acquired the rights to the property in 2018. The banner had previously worked with Summit Entertainment to produce a 2019 feature adaptation of “Hellboy,” starring David Harbour. Casting announcements for the upcoming reboot will be made in the coming weeks.

After a whirlwind Broadway run, which involved getting handed a closing notice, seeing a ticket resurgence and then re-emerging at a different theater two years later, Beetlejuice is moving on to its afterlife.
The musical, based on the 1988 Warner Bros. Film, will close at Broadway’s Marriott Marquis Theatre on Jan. 8 after a nine-month run and then continue on its recently launched national tour, as well as upcoming international productions in Brazil and Japan. It’s one of many shows now contending with a different Broadway environment and one that has been testing out the changed waters for movie musicals.
The show has an unconventional Broadway trajectory: The musical began previews at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre in March 2019 and initially saw weeks of low grosses, until a creative Tony Awards performance served as a catalyst, alongside growing fan support and a robust TikTok presence, and helped lead the musical to break box office records.

Filmmaker Scott Derrickson can seemingly track his reputation as a director by what projects he was offered following any one of his movies. After writing the modest 2000 horror sequel "Urban Legends: Final Cut," Derrickson had an opportunity to write and direct the newest installment in a popular film series. Sadly, "Hellraiser: Inferno" went straight to video and was not terribly well-received by "Hellraiser" fans. In 2004, Derrickson garnered a story-by credit on Wim Wenders' post-9/11 drama "Land of Plenty," which, in terms of genre, was quite the gearshift. "Landy of Plenty" never emerged as an arthouse darling and the director moved back to horror to make "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." On a budget if 19 million, that film made 145 million worldwide in 2005.
In an upcoming oral history of Derrickson's "Sinister" compiled by /Film's own Ryan Scott, the future "Doctor Strange" filmmaker says he "was a big darling around town" following the...

Alison Lohman rarely gets recognized anymore, and that’s just the way she likes it.
It helps that Lohman has long since left Hollywood, an industry that made anonymity impossible for her in the early aughts when the Palm Springs native was one of the most in-demand talents in town. A self-described shy child who was obsessed with musicals, Lohman got her start on stage before her 10th birthday by performing in community theater in the desert in productions of The Sound of Music, Kiss Me, Kate and Annie before moving to Los Angeles around the time she turned 18.
Though she initially toyed with the idea of a music career or studying drama at NYU (where she got accepted), Lohman’s destiny unfolded on the West Coast where acting work came quickly and consistently, mostly on the small screen to start with bit...

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/$19.99) scored a second of what will be likely many weeks atop VOD charts. That comes after the film reached $800 million in domestic box office and it’s about to enter its fifth month in theaters.
Little else changed this week, with fewer films than usual finding positions on all three iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu charts. “Sing 2” (Universal/$19.99), high on all charts again, has spent more than three months at a $19.99 or higher. Like “Spider-Man,” it still ranked in the top 10 this weekend.
“Dog” (United Artists/$19.99), a much more recent release and #7 in theaters, was the third across-the-board placer. The only new entry of note was “Panama” (Saban/$6.99), an action thriller about an arms dealer in the country during the invasion. It costars Mel Gibson, with Mark Neveldine directing. It placed on two charts.
Four Best Picture nominees showed up on at least one chart.

When thinking about our list of the 50 Best Action Movies of the 21st century so far, it became clear that action movies have taken two paths in the past couple of decades. On the one hand, most of the franchise IP blockbusters — especially superhero films — released to massive box-office hauls could qualify as action movies in one way or another, even if they’re less kinetic than pixelated. However, the action movies that depend less on fetishized source material have yielded some of the most personal higher-budget work around. When done well, an action movie can tell great character-driven stories through movement: drama made dynamic.
And that’s what defines so many of the movies on IndieWire’s list: Some are self-consciously quirky character pieces, from Jason Statham needing to keep his heart rate up at adrenalized extremes in “Crank: High Voltage” to Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci having sex...

“Panama,” the latest offering from The Mel Gibson Movie of the Month Club, is the sort of instantly disposable action-thriller that wears its cynicism on its sleeve while laboring to grab attention with quick-cut visuals. Those combine with more gratuitous nudity than you can shake a stick at — without, it should be noted, any sticks — to goose a narrative that is tediously predictable when not borderline incoherent. It is notable primarily for the presence of Cole Hauser, star of TV’s phenomenally popular “Yellowstone,” who earns his top billing by doing most of the heavy lifting for his sporadically glimpsed but frequently heard co-star.
In terms of facilitating a transition from television to features, “Panama” may do more for Hauser than, say, “Macho Callahan” ever did for David Janssen. Hauser fully commits to his role as Becker, an ex-Marine who free-lances for the CIA, using his macho charm, intimidating snarl,...

"Panama has lots to offer a man like you..." Paramount + Saban have revealed the first official trailer for an action thriller called Panama, the latest from filmmaker Mark Neveldine, who hasn't made anything since The Vatican Tapes in 2015. An ex-marine is hired by a defense contractor to travel to Panama to complete an arms deal. In the process he becomes involved with the U.S. invasion of Panama during the political upheaval in the country in 1989, and learns an important lesson about the true nature of political power. Cole Hauser stars as "Becker", along with Charlie Weber, Katie Katzman, Jackie Cruz, and Mel Gibson. This doesn't look bad, but doesn't look so good either. I can't believe it actually opens with that cringe "welcome to the jungle!" scene, my goodness. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Mark Neveldine's Panama, direct from YouTube: Mel Gibson and Cole Hauser ...

After swatting back the Covid-19 scourge to some extent, Puerto Rico opened its ports in June 2020. With the year-long curfew lifted in May this year, it’s been business as usual on this Caribbean island of roughly 3,500 square miles.
The capital of San Juan held its first live audience concert on June 26, 2021 with salsa icon Gilberto Santa Rosa playing to thousands at the Puerto Rico Convention Center for the first time since the pandemic closed it down. According to Asm Global regional manager Jorge Perez, 15 other concerts have been announced, with 10 already sold out.
International acts are also coming in as most U.S. mainland venues remain closed. Plunging cases and a relatively high vaccination rate (up to 70%) has brought some semblance of normality and a growing number of location shoots to the U.S. territory, albeit with health and safety protocols still in place.

The Marvel vs. DC rivalry is arguably much less important to the contracted talent than it is to either the studios or the fans, with countless actors having starred in numerous projects from both comic book companies. With the second wave of Covid-19 crushing hopes of an imminent strong and global restart for the entertainment industry, the resilience of the independent movie business will be tested during AFM’s virtual edition.
The first major market to unfold since the virtual Cannes Marché du Film in June, the AFM was expected to host the launch of a flood of new product, but many companies are now planning to hold back some of their projects for early next year due to the volatile climate brought on by the pandemic.
As cameras are still not rolling everywhere, sellers and buyers won’t board projects unless they have a firm production start date, so more than ever this year, the AFM will showcase finished product, and movies that are either filming or are in post. The Warriors is a timeless cult classic. Directed by Walter Hill and released in 1979, the film follows a street gang – the titular Warriors – as they attempt to survive the journey from the Bronx to Coney Island after being framed for a murder. It’s a grimy, violent and low budget pic, but the various gangs, the cool soundtrack and energetic visual style have earned it a decent amount of kudos over the years. And now, we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us an Aladdin sequel was in development before it was confirmed – that The Warriors is set to be remade.
We don’t have any further details on the project at this early, early stage, but there’s been rumblings for a while now that Paramount were eager to do something with the property. Director Tony Scott had planned a remake of the film at...

In a candid retrospective with Yahoo Movies, Nicolas Cage has revealed his desire to see an R-rated Ghost Rider film burst into life at Marvel Studios.
This is by no means the first time that Cage has gone on record about an adult-oriented spin on Johnny Blaze, but the actor certainly makes a good case for Ghost Rider to receive the R-rated treatment a la Deadpool and Logan.
Not only will it open up the darker corners of the character’s lore, but it’ll also allow the Powers That Be to venture into demonic territory – similar to the upcoming Spawn reboot from Jamie Foxx and writer-director Todd McFarlane – and deliver a comic book movie that’s decidedly different from its PG-13 peers.
Said Cage:

Nicolas Cage tried his hand at comic book stardom with 2007’s “Ghost Rider.” The movie was a critical misfire (23% on Rotten Tomatoes) that didn’t set the box office on fire, grossing $115 million in the U.S. against a $110 million budget. The film’s disappointing returns resulted in a five-year delay for the sequel, “Spirit of Vengeance,” which fared even worse. Hollywood’s current superhero boom started a year after “Ghost Rider” with summer 2018 hits “Iron Man” and “The Dark Knight,” and Cage argues that “Ghost Rider” would’ve fared much better if it were released today.
“Had ‘Ghost Rider’ been made in R-rated format, the way they had the guts to do with ‘Deadpool,’ and they did it again today, I’m fairly certain it would be enormously successful,” Cage told Yahoo! Jason Statham's wildly action-packed Crank films were a blast to watch. They are some of the most adrenaline-fueled films that have ever been made and director Brian Taylor wants to expand the franchise and build a cinematic universe around it! And you know what? I would actually like to see how that would turn out. This could be absolutely insane!
This information came out of a conversation with Movie Crypt Podcast while talking about the possibility of seeing Crank 3 and some of the concepts he's planning for it. Not only does the co-director of Crank want Crank 3, starring Jason Statham. He was a Crank Cinematic Universe.
Crank, then. Regular readers will surely know by now where we stand on the film, arguably the pinnacle – and lord, we don’t say this lightly – of The mighty Statham’s oeuvre to date. And whilst Crank 2 was far patchier, it nonetheless had a great tagline, and a terrific bit in it we’ve no intention of spoiling.
The co-director of the film, Brian Tyler (who made the movie alongside Mark Neveldine), is doing promotion for his new movie, the deliriously nutty Mom & Dad, starring Nicolas Cage. And rightly, interviewers have been asking the key question: where the hell is Crank 3?
Damaged by the poor box office for the second film is the obvious answer. But Tyler is clearly keen for more.

” ‘Crank 3‘ is going to happen. The studios are really excited about it — it’s just all about timing,” director Mark Neveldine proclaimed in 2011, but seven years later there has been absolutely no movement on that front. The sad fact is that while “Crank” and “Crank: High Voltage” occupied a weird part of the pop culture conversation between 2006 and 2009, by time the second movie rolled out, the allure of Jason Statham essentially killing himself to stay alive started to wear out.

As someone who revels in the unabashed ridiculousness and wrongness of the Crank films, Mom and Dad was just the kind of anarchic cinema I was hoping to experience from writer/director Brian Taylor (who helmed the aforementioned Crank films alongside Mark Neveldine). A mix of survival/pandemic horror with a steady flow of pitch-black comedy coursing through its wonderfully nasty veins, Mom and Dad is just the right amount of wrong for this writer, and I enjoyed that Taylor—as expected—doesn’t pull any punches with his latest over-the-top endeavor.
In Mom and Dad, we meet struggling parents Brent (Nicolas Cage) and Kendall (Selma Blair), who are having difficulties in their marriage, as the stresses of creating two children (Anne Winters, Zackary Arthur) and all the responsibilities that come along with parenthood have seemed to rob the couple’s very existences of any kind of joy. Amidst their...

I have to imagine every parent at some point wonders where their life could have gone if they didn’t have children. This doesn’t make them bad people — only those who actually act on the urge by abandoning their families without so much as a goodbye fall under that label. It just proves they’re human. Maybe you remember the past and long for its excess or perhaps you look towards the future, confident you wouldn’t be going to bed at 9:00pm without them.
