“Lord of the Dance” star Michael Flatley is set to be the subject of a new in-depth feature documentary titled “The Billion Dollar Dancer.”
Following Flatley’s life and career from his humble beginnings as the son of Irish immigrants in Chicago to becoming one of the world’s most famous dancers, it will cover everything from bullying to boxing — plus his love of fast cars and his battle with cancer — through archive footage and interviews with the dancing sensation himself.
The doc, which is set to be directed by Ryan Suffern (“Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story”), will also follow Flatley in the present as he launches a new show and oversees the 25th anniversary of “Lord of the Dance,” the Irish dancing spectacle that brought him to global attention.

Eric Roberts doesn’t hold the Guinness World Record for the most screen credits for a living actor. That honor goes to the Indian star Brahmanandam, currently with more than 1,170 titles to his name. But Roberts is quickly catching up. According to his (endlessly updating) IMDb page, he’s appeared in some 700 films and TV shows, making him the actor with the most screen credits in Hollywood working today. Last year alone, he starred in 33 films and there are currently 66 in various stages of production. Not that Roberts is counting (or even has the time to).
Almost four and a half decades after he broke out in 1978 with his Golden Globe-nominated performance in King of the Gypsies, which was followed up with another Globes nod for Bob Fosse’s Star 80 in 1983 and an Oscar nomination for Runaway Train in 1984, the 66-year-old is now...

When the creators of the '90s NBC sitcom "3rd Rock from the Sun" developed the idea about an alien family posing as humans on earth, they did so with the hopes of casting John Lithgow as its central protagonist, Dick Solomon. Lithgow got on board, breaking his own biggest rule in Hollywood, which was to never do a sitcom. "The thing I disliked about the idea of doing a sitcom was that they would – that's all you would be able to do," he told the Los Angeles Times. "People would only think of you that way. The way Carroll O'Connor could never escape Archie Bunker, as great a character actor as he was."
Some of Lithgow's peers may have something to say about this. Courtney Cox earned her fame from playing Monica Geller on the sitcom "Friends" while she simultaneously established herself as an iconic figure in the horror...

When the Welsh singer-songwriter Gwenno tours England, no one understands a word of her lyrics. “But they’re so open to my point of view,” she says, smiling. Growing up speaking two languages fluently – Cornish and Welsh – has endowed her with a split musical identity. “[If] I sing in Welsh, because of my lived experience with it, I feel I’m getting on the soapbox, because protest and campaigning has informed my Welsh language experience,” she explains. “Whereas Cornish is this really intimate home language that’s to do with my imagination. They are two very different personalities.”
Gwenno’s latest album, Tresor, is the first ever Cornish-language record to be shortlisted for the Mercury Prize – today she’ll find out if she’s won. Certainly, she would deserve it. Tresor is a resplendent body of work, a tapestry woven from fine threads of history, folklore, and Gwenno’s own life.

Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg have broken a catastrophic record with their brand new Netflix movie.
The actors star alongside together in Me Time, a buddy comedy film following a stay-at-home dad who goes on a wild weekend away with an old friend.
While Hart’s films are not typically known for being acclaimed, Me Time appears to be particularly disliked.
On review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, the film, at the time of writing, had a measly critic score of just seven per cent, positioning it as each actor’s lowest-rated film of all time.
Typically on Rotten Tomatoes, there is a large difference between the critic and audience score – but that is not the case with Me Time. At the time of writing, the film’s audience score is 29 per cent.
This is even lower than Wahlberg’s films that are largely considered to be turkeys, including M Night Shyamalan...

Mark Kermode has delivered a film review for the history books.
The critic shared his review of new release Blackbird, which is a passion project by Lord of the Dance creator Michael Flatley.
Flatley writes, directs and stars in the film, which he has described as “a tribute to the golden age of cinema”. However, according to Kermode: “I think a session on the golden toilet of cinema is closer.”
The film, which Kermode called “mind-bendingly terrible”, follows a retired secret agent whose past comes back to haunt him after he opens a nightclub in Barbados.
Reviews of the film have branded it “fabulously bad” and “oddly entertaining” – but Kermode has gone out on a limb to call Blackbird “genuinely one of the worst films I have ever seen”, telling his followers: “And as we all know, I’ve seen Oversexed Rugsuckers From Mars, I’ve seen Exorcist II: The Heretic,...

’The Forgiven’ and ‘Fall’ are also out this weekend.
After last weekend’s UK-Ireland box office results proved rather muted – no film reached the £1m mark for the first time since December 2020 – exhibitors and distributors will be anticipating a boost from this Saturday’s National Cinema Day (September 3), in which 560 venues across the UK will be offering tickets at just £3, for all screenings.
This weekend’s widest release comes from Entertainment Film Distributors’ Three Thousand Years Of Longing, playing in 545 cinemas. The Cannes 2022 premiere unites Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba and is George Miller’s first feature since 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

In various rakishly-angled hats, the Riverdance star wrote, directed and stars in a jet-setting Bond knock-off that plays out like the unsexy bits of a mid-80s porn film
Since this increasingly legendary film starring Michael Flatley was briefly aired at London’s Raindance film festival in 2018 – a screening from which the media were barred – reports of it have been scattered, disjointed, unreliable. Like witnesses to a 10-bus pile-up on top of children coming out of a nursery school, those who saw it were traumatised and gibbering. The trailer which finally dropped online earlier this year was very disturbing, as it confirmed that the film really does exist.
Riverdance hoofer Flatley really has produced, written, directed and starred in his own film in which he plays Victor Blackley, a supercool secret agent codenamed “Blackbird”, leader of an undercover special forces unit called “the Chieftains”, like the folk band. Very often,...

At a cinema in London’s central Leicester Square, an area home to frequent star-studded premieres, extra screens have been hastily added to the opening week’s schedule to cope with demand. A few hours’ drive away in the city of Bristol, a former Imax screen — the biggest in the region — has been booked, as has a red carpet and a troupe of Irish dancers.
The movie getting this extra special treatment ahead of its Sept. 2 release isn’t the latest Marvel outing. Nor is it the next prestige drama from a buzzy director starring an ensemble of A-listers.
It’s far from it — a four-year-old cult film from a first-time filmmaker better known for throwing his oiled-up torso across stages around the world. And it’s a film whose cult status has been attained, rather uniquely, without anybody having seen it.

Blackbird, the directorial debut of Lord of the Dance star and famed Riverdancer Michael Flatley and a spy thriller once thought lost forever after effectively disappearing following its glitzy 2018 world premiere, will soon land in U.K. cinemas.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Wildcard Distribution, which caused a stir earlier this month when it announced it would be releasing the long-awaited film in Ireland, will also oversee the U.K. release, with Blackbird now set to fly into both British and Irish theaters from Sept. 2.
Written, directed, produced, financed by and starring Flatley, the film sees the Irish-American dancer play Victor Blackley, a troubled ex-MI6 operative whose glamorous life of retirement as the owner of a nightclub and hotel in Barbados is turned upside down after he is pulled back into the world he left behind, reigniting an old flame.

Lord of the Dance star ‘thrilled’ self-financed film finally being released four years after premiere
Almost four years after it premiered and promptly disappeared, a spy thriller written, directed, produced, financed by and starring the Irish-American dancer Michael Flatley will be released in Irish cinemas in September.
According to its blurb on IMDb, Blackbird is about a “troubled secret agent” who retires and opens “a luxurious nightclub in the Caribbean to escape the dark shadows of his past”. Then, in a bittersweet development for the eponymous former spy, “an old flame arrives and reignites love in his life, but she brings danger with her”.

"Who I am is none of your concern!" Wildcard Distribution in the UK has revealed an official trailer for a spy thriller titled Blackbird, from dance maestro Michael Flatley, who stars in, writes, and directs the film. Not to be confused with the Susan Sarandon drama Blackbird from 2019, or this year's prison drama also called Black Bird, this is something else. It was originally supposed to open in 2020, but after multiple delays and behind-the-scenes drama, the film is only now getting release - starting with Ireland first. Still no US date is set yet. The troubled secret agent "Blackbird" abruptly retires from service and opens a luxurious nightclub in Barbados, in the Caribbean, to escape the dark shadows of his past. An old flame arrives and reignites love in his life but she brings danger with her. Flatley stars, with Eric Roberts, Patrick Bergin, Nicole Evans, and Ian Beattie. This actually doesn't look so bad.

"Why is everyone on this fucking island addicted to drama?" the all-knowing Mama (a superb Luis Alberto Garcia) moans.
Mama is the owner of a Havana gay bar featuring chintzy drag performers who gesticulate to emotional diva tunes and who, when the show's over, whore a little on the side. That's part of the setting for Viva, Ireland's Spanish-language submission for this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
Having strutted its way onto a list of nine finalists -- which will eventually be whittled down to a mere five -- Viva showcases nothing a bit Irish onscreen, not even a high kick filched from Michael Flatley. And although some of the shooting was done on the Emerald shores, possibly interior shots, all the Erin-Go-Bragh action is off screen: Paddy Breathnach, director; Mark O'Halloran, screenwriter, and so forth and so on.
