Sooooo… Cross 3. It’s safe to say No-one ever expected this, even though it was hinted at in the last film! In fact how the hell, did star Brian Austin Green and writer/co-director Patrick Durham even manage to secure the funding to produce this film? No-one ever really wanted the 2017 Cross sequel, Cross Wars, and I have no doubt the audience for a Third film is even smaller.
But here we are, it’s 2019 and the low-budget superhero series continues, obviously still trying to ride the superhero hype wave – whether comic-book movie loving audiences will...

It’s hard to believe that 2011 superhero movie Cross made enough money, or had enough of a fanbase to warrant a sequel, but here we are 6 years after the original, back in action with most of the same cast. Where as the first film, and it’s green Celtic power-providing amulet, was timed to cash-in on that other “green” superhero movie starring Ryan Reynolds, this time round however there’s no similar superhero movie to cash in on. And this time round the genre has had [much] more than it’s fair share of good, bad and Very bad movies.
I wonder which category Cross Wars falls into? If you have to guess, well…
Cross Wars continues the story of Callan...

10. Altered States (1980)
Directed by: Ken Russell
Is it a horror film? Many of Ken Russell’s films could be argued as such, but there’s enough in Altered States that makes it less horror and more science fiction/psychological thriller. Based on the novel by Paddy Chayefsky, Altered States introduced the world to William Hurt (and also featured the film debut of Drew Barrymore). Edward Jessup (Hurt) is studying schizophrenia, but branches out into sensory deprivation experimentation with a floating tank. Eventually, he travels to Mexico to visit a tribe that provides him with an extract which he begins to take before his trips into the flotation tank, resulting in bizarre imagery and eventual physical devolution, once to a primitive man and to a near primordial blob. Side effects start to occur, causing Edward to suffer from episodes of partial regression even without the hallucinogenic drug. Russell’s direction shifts...

Hunger
Stars: Lori Heuring, Linden Ashby, Joe Egender | Written by L.D. Goffigan | Directed by Steven Hentges
Imagine a social experiment where five people are tracked within a dungeon provided with only water and a clock counting down to some unknown event. I know, Big Brothers got a lot to answer for right? This is Hunger.
Five people wake up in an underground dungeon in a premise that is very reminiscent of Saw II, they have never met before but are all connected in some way. From the bones strewn it’s clear that people have been and died there before but other than that there is no evidence of a way out. As the hunger grows the newly formed society within the group begins to fracture as the almost omnipresent figure of their captor watches on by camera, waiting for that moment they turn on each other and the battle to survive will begin.

Remember when Brian Austin Green was badass as a freedom fighter from the future in “The Sarah Connor Chronicles”? Yeah, just keep remembering him in that one, and try to forget this one. And yes, this is an honest to goodness trailer for an honest to goodness upcoming direct-to-dvd release from Sony Pictures starring Brian Austin Green as a superhero vigilante. The film also boasts Michael Clarke Duncan, Jake Busey, Tom Sizemore, and Vinnie Jones in the cast. It’s, wow, it’s pretty bad. But don’t take my word for it. Behold: “Cross”! When beautiful, young women start disappearing from the streets of L.A., it’s time for good-guy Callan (a.k.a. Cross) and his crew of weapons experts to kick into high gear and take out the trash. Granted incredible power by his ancient Celtic cross, Callan must fight to stop an immortal Viking from...

Whoa, what a way to start the new year! After several weeks of desolate conditions in terms of horror title releases, the floodgate just burst open.
This is the week you may want to think about using up those giftcards and cash you got from returning your holiday presents. Major releases are vying for your greenbacks alongside re-releases in Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D (in case Santa brought you a 3D TV recently), and other more independent titles. In addition to movies, there's also a Buffy motion comic and the next volume of a vampire's diary in paperback.
The Last Exorcism (Review)
Directed by Daniel Stamm
Starring Patrick Fabian (Interview), Ashley Bell, Louis Herthum, Tony Bentley
When he arrives on the rural Louisiana farm of Louis Sweetzer, the Reverend Cotton Marcus expects to perform just another routine “exorcism” on a disturbed religious fanatic. An earnest fundamentalist, Sweetzer has contacted the charismatic preacher as a last resort,...

In Fangoria FrightFest’s Hunger (now available on DVD from Phase 4 Films and via video-on-demand; check local listings), about a group of people unwillingly forced into a sinister experiment in which they’re deprived of food and sustenance, actress Lori Heuring immersed herself deeper in a role than ever before: She and the rest of the cast underwent a crash diet on an already psychologically exhausting and claustrophobic set. Fango spoke to Heuring (whose previous genre films include Prom Night, Wicked Little Things, Mulholland Dr. and The In Crowd) about making the film and the toll her latest role took.

After a couple of light on horror weeks, we are finally treated to a bumper crop of new releases. Headlining the week is Frozen, which is just what we in Southern California need to stave off our current heat wave. A couple of oldies but goodies are out, too, as Madman celebrates its Happy 30th Birthday and the original King Kong comes to Blu-ray. Fangoria's eight FrightFest titles bow as well.
Frozen
Directed by Adam Green
In Frozen (review), Adam Green has crafted a potent combination of absolute terror and compelling human drama that will stick with you long after you've left the theatre or turned off the DVD. One thing's for sure: The next time your friends invite you on a ski weekend, odds are you'll try to convince them to head to the beach instead. Frozen stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers.
Buy the Blu-ray or the regular DVD.

Hanelle Cuplepper's award-winning supernatural thriller film Within will premiere on Lifetime TV this week.

We admit that at times we've labeled a few genre films as being more suited to Lifetime than our readership when they veered off into soap opera-ish territory so we're more than a little curious about the network's "broad departure" (in its words) from its typical fare to present supernatural thriller Within this Saturday night, July 31st.
Synopsis:
Rachel Weiss (Mia Ford) can see evil spirits within others. She is a sweet girl with a troubled soul caused by this unique gift. After witnessing the brutal killing of her mother, Rachel and her father (Sam Jaeger) look for a fresh start by moving to a small town. Rachel quickly warms to her new schoolteacher, Abby Miller (Lori Heuring), and becomes ‘best friends’ with classmate Michelle Lowe (Sammi Hanratty).
When Michelle’s penchant for schoolyard pranks turns from good-natured fun to potentially deadly, Rachel suspects that her friend may be less than friendly.

Horror films have explored astute children who can see ghosts or "dead people," but Within steers the formula in a slightly new direction. Hanelle Culpepper's film concerns Rachel Weiss, a girl with a troubled soul caused by a unique gift - she can see evil spirits within others. After witnessing the brutal killing of her mother, Rachel and her father look for a fresh start by moving to a small town. Mia Ford leads the cast as Weiss. She's joined by Lori Heuring ( Hunger ) and Sam Jaeger. You can watch a full trailer at Within-TheMovie.com . Bigfoot Entertainment is taking Within out to buyers. Stay tuned for distribution news.

Got an appetite for suffering? Fango’s got the exclusive debut of the unrated trailer for Steven Hentges’ Hunger (see it below), and info on where you can catch screenings of the film later this week.
The film stars The Poker Club’s Lori Heuring as one of five strangers who awake in an enclosed dungeon and subject to an experiment in depravity. The subjects are left without food, and as their hunger increases, their humanity strips away to reveal the lengths we will go to for survival. “Hunger, for me is about humanity and how far people will go to survive in extreme circumstances,” the director tells Fango. “The genesis came in a screenplay that the writer had submitted to a Slamdance Film Festival competition, and became a finalist. The end credits of Penny Dreadful (part of After Dark Horrorfest) state that the movie is “© 2005 Dreadful Films.” Must…not…make…obvious…joke. Actually, I have to be fair and say that this isn’t a dreadful film, just a quite problematic one—starting with the fact that the title is rather misleading. The storyline has nothing to do with the Victorian-era “penny dreadful” pulp tales; it is about a girl named Penny, but she isn’t dreadful, though dreadful things do happen to her.
Quite a few of them, in fact, starting with a prologue auto crash that she survives but which bloodily kills her parents when she’s a young girl. The next we see of her, she’s a teenager (Rachel Miner) with a phobia of cars who’s being taken on a therapeutic road trip by her psychologist, Orianna (Mimi Rogers). The fact that the attendant...

It's easy to see why Warner Bros. chose to sneak "The In Crowd" into theaters during the middle of the week without any advance screenings for the nasty critics.
It's even easier to predict that this excruciatingly lame thriller will be out of circulation long before Labor Day.
Playing like "Girl, Interrupted: The 90210 Years" -- though it makes the recently departed Aaron Spelling series look like high art by comparison -- this tawdry, bubble-headed Morgan Creek production is a sorry underachiever on every level.
It isn't even bad enough to be considered good camp.
Directed with uninspired vapidity by music video director-turned-filmmaker-turned-music video director Mary Lambert ("Pet Semetary", Madonna's "Material Girl" clip), the story centers on efforts of attractive psychiatric hospital outpatient Adrien Williams (Lori Heuring) to re-enter society after seemingly coming to terms with a troubled past.
But leave it to her doctor Daniel Hugh Kelly) to put Adrien's emotional resolve to the test by getting her a job at an obnoxious country club filled with rich, young, pretty, vacuous white kids. As a matter of fact, sightings of any people of color are reserved for background serving staff or foaming-at-the-mouth mental patients. As co-worker Joanne (Kim Murphy) succinctly puts it, "This isn't life, it's a J. Crew catalogue."
Naturally, the inhabitants in question have nothing better to do with their time between the partying and the golf and tennis lessons than to pick on the new girl, who should know better than to allow herself to be taken under the highly suspect wing of resident bitch princess Brittany (Susan Ward).
Apparently unaware that it's never a wise idea for the help to fraternize with the guests, impressionable Adrien manages to find time to balance her pool cleaning with her hectic social life (carefully orchestrated by the conniving Brittany) while failing to heed the warnings of Brittany's resentful outcast lesbian girlfriend Kelly (Laurie Fortier) to steer clear.
The cheesy script by Mark Gibson ("Lush") and Philip Halprin is filled with dorky dialogue uniformly delivered by a young cast with all the commitment of Stepford teens.
Director Lambert, meanwhile, apparently adopted the work ethic, "When in doubt, go for the hackneyed music video effects," which are applied liberally with the willing compliance of DP Tom Priestly ("The Thomas Crown Affair").
As a curious footnote, Warner Bros. has made a "special request" to the very same press it opted to bypass to not reveal the ending of the film to an assumed audience, an ending that is surprising only in that there is absolutely no surprise involved whatsoever.
