The affection that James Hetfield feels for Motörhead’s late frontman, Lemmy Kilmister, is well documented: Metallica have covered “Overkill” dozens of times, the whole band once performed as “The Lemmys” at Kilmister’s 50th birthday bash, and Hetfield’s lyrics to Metallica’s “Murder One” is basically a string of Kilmister references. Now Kilmister will forever be a part of Hetfield since the singer blended some of the Motörhead frontman’s cremains into tattoo ink and got an Ace of Spades tat on his right middle finger.

Q&a’s are a staple of indie opening weekends since they tend to sell tickets but Bob and Jeanne Berney’s Picturehouse has raised that bar, offering audiences seven-minute live burlesque revues before selected screenings of documentary Carol Doda Topless At The Condor. The ode to the woman, and to 1960s San Francisco where she broke out topless, opens in limited release in New York, LA, San Francisco and San Rafael. Dancers in what Bob Berney called a “Doda-esqe burlesque” will not be topless,” he said — “but pretty close.”
Dancers start in the audience then move to the front of the theater against a specially designed backdrop of image and sound on screen. “It brings you into that world immediately. You are there before the film starts,” he said.
“Eventizing” a film is great if you can do it. The box office is much better but still a bit weird since Covid.

Metallica won Best Metal Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards on Sunday (February 4th) for their song “72 Seasons,” the title track to their 2023 album. The trophy was handed out during the streaming “Premiere Ceremony,” with bassist Robert Trujillo accepting on the band’s behalf.
With boyngeius and Paramore dominating the other rock categories, Metallica were the only heavy act to win a Grammy this year. The legendary metal act beat out Disturbed, Ghost, Slipknot, and Spiritbox for the honor. Overall, Metallica have now won nine Grammy awards, the most by any metal band.
“I just want to say that Lars, James, and Kirk could not be here because they’re with their families, and families are everything to all of us,” began Trujillo during his acceptance speech. “I live in Southern California, so it’s a little easier.”
He added, “We want to thank Greg Fidelman, our incredible producer, and our recording team.

St. Anger is arguably the low point in Metallica’s recording career. The documentary Some Kind of Monster depicted the disfunction in the group at the time, and the resulting music is among the band’s most derided.
The 2003 album, and Lars Ulrich’s legendarily bad snare-drum tone in particular, has been the butt of many jokes over the years. Now the band appears to have come around to the humorous absurdity of it all.
The self-deprecation came in the form of a social media post announcing the addition of tracks from St. Anger to FenderPlay, an instructional guitar platform that allows aspiring guitarists to play along to licensed recordings.
Posted the band on Instagram: “Everyone’s favorite album is now on @fenderplay! Dust off your guitar and get started on “Frantic,” “St. Anger,” “Some Kind of Monster,” and “The Unnamed Feeling.”

Torben Ulrich, the father of Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, has died at the age of 95.
Lars broke the sad news on Instagram on Wednesday (December 20th), writing the following:
“Torben Ulrich: 1928-2023. 95 years of adventures, unique experiences, curiosity, pushing boundaries, challenging the status quo, tennis, music, art, writing….and quite a bit of Danish contrarian attitude. Thank you endlessly! I love you dad”.
Metallica fans will recognize Torben from his memorable appearance in the band’s Some Kind of Monster documentary. In the film, the senior Ulrich was invited to the recording studio to hear an early version of the material that would become 2003’s St. Anger. When asked for his opinion after hearing a song snippet, Torben uttered his now-famous line: “I would delete that.”
Lars has described his father as both Metallica’s biggest fan and critic.

Metallica are set to wrap up the 2023 North American leg of their highly successful “M72 World Tour” with upcoming stops in St. Louis and Detroit. Ahead of the St. Louis gigs on November 3rd and 5th, the band’s official merchandise company Merch Traffic has filed a lawsuit to prevent the sale of bootleg T-shirts and other unauthorized items around the stadium.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the trademark-infringement suit was filed on Thursday (October 26th) in St. Louis federal court against various John and Jane Does seeking to sell counterfeit Metallica items.
The newspaper also reports that Merch Traffic took similar action in other states, including New York, Texas, and New Jersey, during previous stops on the tour.
Per the lawsuit, Merch Traffic claims, “The infringing merchandise is of the same general appearance as plaintiff’s merchandise and is likely to cause confusion among prospective purchasers.

Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo was born in Santa Monica, California, and grew up in the Los Angeles area. When he was six years old on August 21st, 1971, a young Trujillo found himself at his grandmother’s house in Hawthorne — just around the corner from a surplus store that was held up by the Manson Family.
In a new interview on The Offspring’s Time to Relax podcast, the bassist recalled the harrowing story of hiding out in his grandma’s shower as 30 police officers engaged in a shootout with four of Charles Manson’s followers.

Metallica are considered an elite live act, and they take their craft seriously enough to release soundboard recordings of nearly every live performance.

Metallica is, without question, one of the biggest music acts in history. They've sold more than 120 million albums worldwide and have played on every single continent -- yes, even Antarctica. Not bad for a thrash metal band that seemingly had very little commercial upside and originally tried to call their first album "Metal Up Your Ass." In 2013, after more than 30 years of conquering the music industry, Metallica set its sights on conquering the big screen with a wildly ambitious concert film. Unfortunately for James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo, the venture proved to be arguably the biggest financial misfire of their storied career.

Lars Ulrich was only 19 when Metallica released their speed limit–defying debut, Kill ‘Em All, in 1983. On each successive album, the metal musicians waited for the mainstream to come to them. Then, their 1991 “Black Album” became the bestselling album of the past three decades thanks to songs like “Enter Sandman” and “Nothing Else Matters.” Every album they’ve put out since has gone to Number One or Two, and their Eighties anthem “Master of Puppets” recently enjoyed a renaissance thanks to Stranger Things.

U2 kicked off their “U2:uv Achtung Baby” residency at Las Vegas’ Msg Sphere on Friday night. The sphere, which cost $2.3 billion to construct, features a wraparound interior LED screen, 170,000 ultra-directional speakers that utilize beamforming technology to deliver targeted audio to every seat in the venue, and a haptic flooring system, among many other high-tech features.
Bono and co. made full use of these features as they ran through a 22-song set that included material from their 1991 studio album, Achtung Baby, as well as their new song “Atomic City” and classics like “Vertigo,” “Where the Streets Have No Name,” With or Without You,” and “Beautiful Day.”
Oftentimes, the 35-story building’s floor-to-ceiling screens would project Es Devlin and Brian Eno-inspired artwork, while fans were treated to a crystal clear street view of Sin City during their new Vegas-inspired song. Metallica drummer and onetime Napster naysayer Lars Ulrich is apparently okay with people “stealing” his band’s music nowadays.
Ulrich became the face of the anti-Internet music piracy movement after the infamous “Metallica v. Napster, Inc.” lawsuit in 2000. The drummer was a vocal opponent of people sharing MP3 files of the band’s music via P2P file-sharing platforms such as Napster, upsetting millions of music fans in the process.
It’s been more than 20 years since the Metallica-Napster case, and now streaming has become the dominant form of music consumption, albeit via paid services like Spotify and Apple Music.
While some still hold a lingering bitterness toward Ulrich for the Napster case, the drummer has a new outlook given the current state of the music industry. In a new interview with the SmartLess podcast — hosted by actors Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett — the metal legend expressed that...

He continued, “We know that. We know that this is who we are as kanaka, as a culture and a community, that when we’re down, we come together and we rise.

Los Angeles, Aug 6 (Ians) American heavy metal band Metallica is currently on its ‘M72’ World Tour travelling across North America and Europe. In a recent incident, the band’s venue at Long Beach Arena in California led to them paying over $300,000 for damages caused by fans who damaged thousands of cushions.
Speaking to ‘Need A Friend’ podcast back in August 2, drummer Lars Ulrich spoke of the incident “Why are there over 16,000 seats in there? We’ve paid for about 15,000 of those 16,000 seats over the years because every time we were playing Long Beach Arena, people would just take the cushion, you know, play frisbee with it inside the arena.”
Later talking about the damages on August 5 night, Ulrich said “This was an absolute mind f***. The very next day, the venue staff was like, ‘Okay, Metallica, here’s those $300,000 worth of cushions that you have to pay for. And we...

If you were to take the smooth vocals of Iron Maiden, the in your face brooding metal and hard partying ways of Black Sabbath with a sprinkle of the epic guitar riffs of Led Zeppelin into a blender, the result may be something close to the band that would redefine the face of music in the early 1980’s. A band that became so massive that in 2013 they became the first musical act to ever perform on every continent when they performed live in Antarctica. A band whose hard partying ways and love of Jägermeister helped usher in the age of the hard partying rock stars. But how do you get to be known as one of the biggest musical acts to ever exist? By putting out consistently great music, that’s how! But do they still rock? Do the cool kids still listen to them? Lets find out Wtf Happened to Metallica?...

London, August 4 (Ians) Iron Maiden drummer Nicko ‘Mc Brian has now begun recovering from a massive stroke which made him unable to play drums for months, ahead of the heavy metal legends rehearsing for their new tour.
The 71-year old drum legend had begun fearing that his career may get over after he lost movement on the right side of his body in January.
Taking to the Iron Maiden social media handle, the drummer said in a video statement: “The reason I’m writing to you all today is to let you know of a very serious health problem that I have been through. In January I had a stroke, thank the Lord it was a minor one referred to as a Tia. It left me paralysed. It seemed like Winger were catching flak from all sides in the 1990s.
As the industry swiftly closed the door on hair metal in the wake of the grunge revolution, Winger became the proverbial punching bag for the metal community and the “fall guy” for a genre that had seemingly died overnight.
Famously, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich can be seen throwing darts at a pin-up of Kip Winger in the video for “Nothing Else Matters.” Then, Mike Judge plastered a Winger shirt on Stewart, the dorky neighborhood kid on Beavis and Butt-Head.
Over the years, Kip has lamented the fact that these very public anti-endorsements effectively stifled Winger’s career as a band — and cast a stigma that has scarred the legacy of the band and its members. It doesn’t help that Winger’s biggest hit, “Seventeen,” hasn’t exactly aged well in terms of political correctness.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has written the introduction to a new edition of Hunter S. Thompson’s Screwjack, a collection of short stories originally printed in 1991.
“Beyond psyched to have had the opportunity to write an introduction for the latest edition of Hunter S. The metal legend added, “Thanx to @simonandschuster for encouraging me to put pen to paper for this. Check it out if you like things wild, salacious and unsettling.”
Screwjack was originally independently published in a limited run of 300 numbered and 26 lettered copies, and then republished by Simon & Schuster in 2000. The new edition, featuring Ulrich’s intro, is now available in paperback and Kindle editions via Amazon.

When Metallica’s self-titled “Black Album” came out in 1991, if you squinted at the cover art, you could see both the band’s label and a leaping coiled snake like the one on the Gadsden flag. The band riffed on that idea on their tour for the album, opening up the area in front of the stage and calling it the “Snake Pit,” an enclosure for an elite group of fans and VIPs. And even after Metallica put out other albums, they continued using the Snake Pit at concerts.

For the first night in Amsterdam, the metal titans showcased three songs from 72 Seasons, including “Lux Æterna,” “Screaming Suicide,” and “Sleepwalk My Life Away,” with the latter two receiving their live debuts.
Elsewhere in the 16-song set, 1984’s Ride the Lightning, 1986’s Master of Puppets, and 1991’s self-titled LP (aka “The Black Album”) were equally represented with three songs each, while no more than one song was played from any other albums.

Metallica’s new album, 72 Seasons, has debuted at No. 2 on the latest Billboard 200 chart, ending the band’s streak of six straight albums landing at No. 1 on the all-genre tally. The metal icons’ latest full-length effort was beat out for the top spot by controversial country star Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time, which notches its seventh week at No. 1.
The last time Metallica didn’t debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 was with 1988’s …And Justice for All. Since then, all their studio albums beginning with 1991’s self-titled LP (aka “The Black Album”) had premiered at the top spot, until now.
Metallica can take solace in the fact that 72 Seasons is No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart, with 134,000 of its 146,000 equivalent units coming in the form of pure album sales. It’s the biggest-selling rock or hard rock album since Tool’s 2019 release Fear Inoculum. For comparison,...

Mick Jagger is an iconic rock star whose persona has earned him the status of a legendary figure. Many look up to The Rolling Stones singer and can only dream of achieving the status he has. However, anyone with this status would most likely develop an inflated ego. This might be the case with Mick Jagger as Lars Ulrich, the drummer of Metallica, says he was asked not to look him in the eyes when they were opening for The Rolling Stones.

Metallica’s first album in nearly seven years has arrived, and it just might be the iconic metal band’s best LP in the past 30 years. As stated in our recent review, 72 Seasons is a “monument to an illustrious career.”
Prior to its release, fans were treated to four singles — “Lux Æterna,” “Screaming Suicide,” “If Darkness Had a Son,” and the title track — all mighty examples of the strong effort Metallica have delivered with 72 Seasons.

Metallica are in a full promotional blitz for 72 Seasons, having taken over Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, as they get set to embark on their massive 2023-2024 “M72 World Tour” later this month (tickets available here). With the band performing two unique sets over two nights in each city, expect to hear a good number of the new songs played live during the course of the two-year run.

“Traumatic! Volcanic! Psychotic! Demonic! Hypnotic!” So runs the rhyme scheme in the title track of Metallica’s 11th studio album. Obviously, they’re not going for subtlety. They’ve annoyed fans before by attempting to tone it down on their past couple of releases so, as they edge into their sixties, the band return to the solidly compelling thrash metal with which they made their name. And honestly, when they’re on form, no band on the planet is better at writing and executing epic songs that head hugger-mugger for the horizon in a way that makes listeners feel as though they’re hugging the curves and swerving the spills of a Formula One racetrack. Songs don’t follow formulae; they just accelerate hard through the straights and snake wildly through the corners as they come. James Hetfield’s screaming hyperbole locking directly into the pounding rubber of Lars Ulrich’s relentless riff-making.

Can Metallica actually master puppets? That was the question posed to the metal icons on Wednesday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, resulting in a hilarious sketch. Oh, and the band also rocked an epic rendition of “Master of Puppets” on the show.
Following his monologue, host Jimmy Kimmel introduced a pre-taped segment in which the four members of Metallica went to marionette school to learn how to become puppeteers. After a quick lesson from the pros, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers were tasked with performing a theatrical production in front of a group of young children.
Lars Ulrich had the honor of appearing first, controlling a cactus puppet, as he began the story of how Metallica became a band in an amusing high-pitched voice. James Hetfield came out next, manipulating a cat puppet. Soon followed Kirk Hammett, the donkey, and Robert Trujillo, the invisible man.

Metallica kicked off their weeklong takeover of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday night (April 10th), chatting with the talk-show host and performing the single “Lux Æterna.”
The metal legends will release their new album, 72 Seasons, on Friday (April 14th), and leading up to its release, they’ll appear on Kimmel every night through Thursday. The Kimmel residency also precedes their 2023-2024 world tour, which kicks off later this month (tickets available here).
Kimmel started the jokes early, greeting James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo as “the most adorable boy band of all time.”
When Kimmel commented that he saw a line of their fans in the morning, and noticed that “half of them looked like they were in high school,” Ulrich responded, ‘That’s the boy band in us! I don’t think they know how old we are. Let’s keep this a secret between all of us.

Back in 2021, Gojira drummer Mario Duplantier came to the defense of the oft-criticized Lars Ulrich, praising the Metallica drummer as a “genius” for his showmanship and rock-solid presence behind the kit.
Duplantier doubled down on that sentiment in another interview this year, saying, “We need to bring some justice for [Ulrich] … I’m a bit tired of seeing all this conversation about Lars because what he did create is quite unique. Listen to …And Justice for All. It’s amazing.”
While speaking with Ulrich for Consequence’s just-published Metallica cover story, we asked him what he thought about Duplantier calling him a “genius,” and the Metallica drummer opened up on his larger philosophy as a musician. For Ulrich, it’s never been about flexing skill.
“The goal has never been genius,” Ulrich said. “If there’s one constant, it’s certainly not landing in the place of genius; it’s...

Metallica conjure the “wrath of man” in a molten hellscape in the video for “72 Seasons,” the title track of their upcoming album. James Hetfield sings bleak lyrics like “staring into black light, permanently midnight” and “mad seasons take their toll” while playing heavy, piston-chugging riffs. The song is a nearly eight-minute, epic journey reckoning with “72 seasons gone” – referring to the first 18 years of life – and all the hardships that accompany coming of age (plus a fiery, wah-wah inflected solo by Kirk Hammett, who cowrote the track with Hetfield and drummer...
