Is one of very few contemporary cinematographers to have always been a cinematographer, having never climbed the ranks through the camera, lighting or other departments. He was hired straight out of film school by director Abel Ferrara to shoot the feature China Girl (1987).
Graduated from the Film and TV School (FAMU) of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague in 1985.
Has a son named Luka Bazeli, who also works professionally as a cinematographer in narrative, commercial and music video work.
Member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) since 2007.
Member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
