As was previously reported, the film boasts an all-star cast led by Billy Bob Thornton, Kathy Bates, Christina Hendricks, Tony Cox, and Brett Kelly. Joining the already announced cast are Ryan Hansen (Veronica Mars, 2 Broke Girls), comedian Jenny Zigrino (50 Shades of Black), and Jeff Skowron (The Good Shepherd). Sound on Sight undertook a massive project, compiling ranked lists of the most influential, unforgettable, and exciting action scenes in all of cinema. There were hundreds of nominees spread across ten different categories and a multi-week voting process from 11 of our writers. The results: 100 essential set pieces, sequences, and scenes from blockbusters to cult classics to arthouse obscurities.
You know an action hero is the baddest of badasses when he or she walks in and the room goes silent. The drug lord’s bodyguards, the mastermind’s henchmen, or even the foolhardy pack of drunkards outside a roadside bar stand at attention, ready for a challenge. It’s just one person. This shouldn’t be too hard. Seconds later, they’re on the ground nursing bruises, or worse, stumps where their arms and legs used to be. The One vs. Many Fight is the chance for the hero to prove...

The ceremony took place here tonight at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. Lubezki won for the feature film Birdman Or (The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance). Freeman won the episodic television category for Boardwalk Empire, and Lindley took the honors in the TV Movie/Miniseries/Pilot category for Manhattan. It was a pretty stellar year once again for cinematography and I don't envy the members of the American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) their duty of narrowing it down to the top tier. Last year they didn't even bother narrowing — they settled on a whopping seven nominees. Why not? The more the merrier when the work is this good. No such luck this year, however, as we're back to five. And I must say, with two excellent pieces of work this year, I'm super bummed that Robert Elswit didn't make this list. I would have liked to see Bradford Young get the love, too, but I have no doubt he'll get his laurels in due time. "Birdman," "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "The Imitation Game" remain strong as the only films so far to pick up nods from all guilds (we'll see how that shifts throughout the day). "The Imitation Game...

The American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) has named its nominees for the organization’s 29th Annual Outstanding Achievement Awards. HBO is the top network contender with three nominations, while Fox and Lifetime each earning two. “Our members had a very difficult time choosing these nominees from such an incredible field of submissions," Asc President Richard Crudo said in a statement. “They have done superlative work in a very challenging medium, and we salute them.” For his work on "Boardwalk Empire’s" final season opener, Jonathan Freeman earned his eighth nomination. The Asc’s press release notes that he has won four Asc Awards for "Game of Thrones" (2014), "Boardwalk Empire" (2012, 2011), and "Homeland Security" (2005), with additional noms for "Taken" (2003), "Strange Justice" (2000) and "Prince Street" (1998). "Gotham" nominee David Stockton previously won for his work on "Eleventh Hour" (2009) and earned nominations for the "Alcatraz" pilot (2013), "Chase" (2012), and the "Nikita" pilot (2011). Other previous nominees include...

Kino Lorber releases 1990 supernatural cop thriller The First Power on Blu-ray this month, though time has been nothing but unkind to the film’s B-movie tropes that capitalized on the star power of the then very popular Lou Diamond Phillips. Opening in April, 1990 to generally tepid response, it was the sophomore feature of director and screenwriter Robert Resnikoff, who would not direct or write any features thereafter (though he had a couple previous screenwriting credits that must have warranted some promise, including the Lewis Teague directed Jay Leno/Pat Morita action comedy Collision Course). By today’s more lofty standards, Resnikoff’s serial killing acumen seems woefully cornball.
L.A. homicide detective Russell Logan (Lou Diamond Phillips) is no stranger to hunting serial killers, but he may have met his match after catching the Pentagram killer (Jeff Kober). A street wise psychic (Tracy Griffith) warns Logan against what might happen...

Though there are a few exceptions here and there, a film headlined by Jason Statham usually falls into one of two categories; generic but entertaining actioner or generic and too lax to ignore actioner. Directed by Gary Fleder, Homefront offers up just enough satisfying fun to reside in the former group, taking its place alongside Parker and Safe as one of the Stath’s better offerings in recent times.
Penned by Sylvester Stallone – who was set to star in the lead role before he got old(er) – Homefront centres on widowed ex-dea agent Phil Broker (Statham), who has left the undercover life behind for a decidedly quieter one with his 10-year-old daughter Maddy (Izabela Vidovic). After Maddy beats up a mean classmate at school – as any Statham child is inherently taught to do – Broker soon winds up on the radar of meth dealer Gator Bodine (James Franco), brother to the...

NBC’s Grimm gives us something to grin about, renown restaurateur Bobby Flay makes being healthy look — dare we say — fun, and child phenoms make us all feel lazy. Plus, you heard it here first: Coin-flipping may determine who walks off with an Oscar next month.
Grimm Web Series | In the first episode of the four-part series, Bud (Danny Bruno), an Eisbiber, stops by Rosalee’s (Bree Turner) spice shop to obtain a hair loss cure for … “a friend.” Silas Weir Mitchell also stars in this humorous little ditty that will tide fans over until the show’s March 8 NBC return.

Miracle Mile
Directed by Steve De Jarnatt
Written by Steve De Jarnatt
1989, USA
Miracle Mile may have been a box office flop, but the film has garnered a loyal cult following throughout the years, and with good reason. Mile is a clever and suspenseful apocalyptic drama, which just so happens to boast one of the ten greatest endings of all time.
Writer/Director DeJarnatt wrote the original draft of the screenplay in 1978 but it only began to attract attention five years later when American Film magazine listed it as “one of the 10 best unmade scripts” floating around Hollywood. The script kicked around for about a decade while DeJarnatt worked on other people’s movies trying to find a way to get his project made. The story goes that when Steve DeJarnatt sold the script to Warners, he also placed a clause in his contract that bound him to the project as a director.

Love him or hate him, you've got to give Adam Sandler credit. The man is loyal. Sandler makes sure that whenever he works, his pals work, too, and that includes actors, directors, writers, and many of the other behind-the-scenes people it takes to make a movie. Sometimes he just brings together talent to support a friend's project, which he'll produce via his company, Happy Madison, or he'll gather everyone around to join him in a film in which he'll star. Either way, most of the people Sandler either worked with on Saturday Night Live (TV) or on previous features, or both. Sandler's latest film, Grown Ups (2010), is an ensemble buddy comedy in which he's joined by such familiar faces as Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, and Kevin James, as well as Tim Meadows, Norm MacDonald, Steve Buscemi, Tim Herlihy (a Sandler go-to writer and producer who often turns up in small roles), and more.
