Julia, Mariana, Rebecca, and Benny, children of Leo, join the family for lunch somewhere in Mexico and discuss whether to sell the ranch or not. Simple plot, nothing much to it. Ah! You would be mistaken if you thought so. Surely there have been movies, most notably Festen or the underrated Death in the Gunj, that highlight what happens when a family gets together in certain unique circumstances and things get explosive. Familia gives the impression that it’s another one of those films where secrets, psychological or sociological in nature, will come tumbling out, but it turned out to be a much more probing film. It’s not that exhilarating to watch the scenes unfold in this film, perhaps because I became like a voyeur, wanting to peep into the interpersonal dynamics of a family, waiting for the drama of the dysfunctional(?) family to unfold. Familia set me up for some spicy secrets,...

At The Gates is an entertaining and timely thriller that blends the hot button topic of illegal immigration and undocumented workers into a universal story of fear, paranoia, and the perilous state of our own humanity. That it succeeds to the degree it does is the fact that first time feature writer/director Augustus Meleo Bernstein keeps us guessing as to the intentions and the ultimate fate of its tight circle of main characters. Essentially this is a chamber piece all set in one attractive Los Angeles area suburb’s home and the class drama taking place inside that seems ripped from headlines of individual tragic stories of illegal immigrants who have to worry at any given moment when Ice is going to show up at their doorstep, or in the case of At The Gates, at the doorstep of their employers.

As a result of elections that took place this year from June 5-9, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 55-person board of governors convenes in July, more than one-fifth of its seats will be occupied by people who were not a part of it in June.
This is the result not of a repudiation of incumbents — in fact, no incumbent who could have sought reelection opted not to, and no incumbent who sought reelection lost — but rather of stricter term limits that the board imposed upon itself in recent years.
For the 2023-24 term, the board — which is composed of three governors representing each of the Academy’s 18 branches except for the newly created production/technology branch, which has just one, plus three “governors at large” — will be joined by 11 rookie governors: Wendy Aylsworth (production/technology branch), David I. Actor Lou Diamond Phillips, documentary filmmaker Simon Kilmurry and writer Dana Stevens are among the 11 film professionals who have been elected to the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy announced on Thursday.
Those new governors are part of a wholesale makeover of the AMPAS board prompted by new term limits imposed last year. In 10 of the 11 branches where first-time governors were elected, the incumbent governors were unable to run again because of those new limits, which restrict governors to two consecutive three-year terms. Last year, when those limits were instituted, 10 governors were termed off the board and 12 first-time governors were elected.
This year’s election means that 23 of the 55 members of the board will be in their first or second term.

Santiago Mitre’s “Argentina, 1985” and “News of a Kidnapping,” created by Andrés Wood and Rodrigo García, swept the top prizes for best picture on Saturday night at the 2023 Platino Awards, in a sign of how the global streamers – here Amazon Studios and Prime Video – have lured top-of-their-class talent in Latin America.
One highlight of the ceremony, dedicated to films and TV shows in the Spanish-speaking world, was Benicio del Toro’s acceptance speech of a honorary Platino in which he reflected on being typecast for many years in Hollywood as a Latino actor.
“If I had to play stereotypes, I tried to find the character’s humanity, a sense of complicity, so that audiences felt what my character felt and whilst they’re watching, don’t forget who I am and where I come from.,” he said. “What’s important is to share more than be divided,” he added.

The last time Mexican filmmakers Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu released three new movies in the space of the same year was 2006. By then, their reputations at home had been established by early successes like Y tu mamá también (Cuarón), The Devil’s Backbone (del Toro) and Amores Perros (Iñárritu) and they had each worked in the U.S., with del Toro and Cuarón stepping into blockbuster cinema with Hellboy and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban respectively, and Iñárritu directing Sean Penn and Naomi Watts to Oscar nominations with 21 Grams.
When they donned tuxedos to celebrate the 79th Academy Awards together on February 25, 2007, “The Three Amigos,” as they’d been dubbed, might have considered the evening a high watermark in their respective careers. Plot: Half brothers Raymond and Ray reunite when their estranged father dies – and discover that his final wish was for them to dig his grave. Together, they process who they’ve become as men, both because of their father and in spite of him.
Review: Of the actors working today, few are more reliable than Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke. Both actors have done their fair share of genre work and both have recently been involved in the comic book industrial complex, both as villains. While Ethan Hawke has made his disdain for mainstream filmmaking quite clear, both actors have done admirable work with roles that would have been underwhelming in the hands of other actors. When the two actors were set to share the screen in Raymond & Ray, I expected something special as the pair play adult siblings coping with the death of their abusive father. You can bury family, but you can’t bury the past. Your father, whom you hated, dies. His final wish, which seems like some perverse joke from the great beyond, is that you and your half-brother not only attend the funeral but are the two men who actually dig the grave. Oh yeah, this father also named your Raymond and then had a son with another woman and named him Raymond, leaving you to be known as Raymond and Ray to distinguish yourselves from one another, seemingly yet another cruel joke your unknowable father inexplicably gave you at birth.

So now that October’s past the midway point many of us are getting that end-of-the-year “sense of dread” as the two major holidays loom with the pressure of reuniting with the family. Oh, I know that there are those on the “other side of the coin” who truly relish the big annual “sitdowns” (and consider yourself fortunate indeed). This film is assuredly in the former category. Oh, and it’s not set during a holiday. Rather it’s more of a family “unraveling” as the setting is the funeral of a parent. Which in turn brings together, after a long “hiatus”, two brothers from “different mothers”. And though they share a papa, they’ve got little in common despite the shared “moniker”. But to make things easier, their patriarch referred to the guys as Raymond & Ray.
The first one we meet is the “straight-laced” timid and a tad “up-tight...

This review originally ran Sept. 14, 2022, for the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In “Raymond & Ray,” Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke play half-brothers journeying together to attend the funeral of their father, from whom they both were estranged.
The movie, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival prior to an Apple TV+ release, opens with Raymond (McGregor) driving through the rain to the cabin of Ray (Hawke), because an unannounced in-person visit is the only way to tell Ray that their father, Harris, has died. The funeral is scheduled for the next day, and Harris’ final wishes include both sons attending the funeral, digging the grave and putting Harris in the ground together.
Having been a serial philanderer and physical abuser, Harris does not exactly stir up the warm fuzzies for the siblings. Ray has zero interest in going, but the...

Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor: two heartthrobs of the '90s and early 2000s, together in one movie. What could go wrong? Well, when you have a dour drama about two half-brothers who reunite to bury their estranged father, it turns out, quite a lot.
"Raymond and Ray" is the new comedy-drama written and directed by Rodrigo García and produced by Alfonso Cuarón, which doesn't have much in the way of comedy, or much in the way of chemistry between two of our most charismatic leading actors. Instead, it's a bafflingly dull road trip movie full of clunky expositional dialogue like "How's your son who you haven't spoken to in several years?" and bizarre acting choices from a cast who seem to have varying degrees of familiarity with the script. Worst yet, it wastes the potential silver screen magic you could have by casting Hawke and McGregor as once-close...

The pair play estranged brothers reuniting on a road trip in a sentimental and silly film which wastes everybody’s acting talents
Here is a terribly meagre experience from writer-director Rodrigo García, a silly, pointless movie which never delivers on its promises of drama and comedy and contains not a single funny or believable moment. As a filmic meal, it is pretty much entirely without nutritional or calorific value.

One is in a boring office job, the other is a construction worker who has abandoned his talent as a jazz musician – both are losers. Specialty film rollouts continues to accelerate with Chinonye Chukwu’s Till, Park Chan-wook’s Decision To Leave and A24’s Stars At Noon joining releases from previous weeks to populate theaters as awards season gathers steam.
Till, from United Artists Releasing, world premiered at the ongoing New York Film Festival to stellar reviews. It opens on 16 screens in five markets – NY, LA, Chicago, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The story of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old lynched in 1955 while visiting cousins in Mississippi, is an emotional one, and a tough one. But explicit violence is something Chukwu determinedly left out of the frame, focusing instead on Deadwyler’s Mamie Till-Mobley, Emmet’s mother, as she pursues justice for her son. Word of mouth, that this is first and foremost a poignant, powerful cinematic journey about one person changing history, will be key.

Two MTV Documentary films vying for Academy Awards attention — Ondi Timoner’s “Last Flight Home” and Tanaz Eshaghian’s short “As Far as They Can Run” — garnered the top nonfiction honors at the 23rd annual Woodstock Film Festival.
“Last Flight Home,” about Timoner and her family’s last days with her father, won the best documentary prize, while “As Far as They Can Run,” about disabled children in rural Pakistan who have been deemed “useless” by their communities, took home the fest’s best short documentary award.
“Last Flight Home” premiered at Sundance earlier this year before opening the Telluride Film Festival in September. This year marked Timoner’s first time at the Woodstock fest.
“The greatest joy I have is sharing my work in person,” Timoner told Variety. “The reason I make films is to impact people and this film is doing that more than any other film I’ve made.

The two have been apart for quite a while, but after their father dies — and makes a very odd request — they reunite and reminisce about what a jerk he was. A new trailer has been released for the film, which will hit theaters first, then stream on the service.
The film is both written and directed by Rodrigo García, and produced by Academy Award-winner Alfonso Cuarón and Julia Lynn via Mockingbird Pictures. The trailer release comes shortly after the film had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2022. The tagline for the film is "You can bury family, but you can't bury the past."

The trailer for Apple TV+’s Raymond & Ray opens with the revelation a father’s last wish was that his sons dig his grave, which is odd but also strangely moving. Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke star as half-brothers who weren’t exactly close to each other or their dad before he died, but the trailer teases their relationship will transform as they come to terms with their father’s death.
Maribel Verdú (Now and Then), Sophie Okonedo (Slow Horses), Tom Bower (El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie), and Vondie Curtis Hall (For the People) also star in writer/director Rodrigo Garcia’s new dramedy. Garcia earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for directing the pilot of Big Love. His feature film directorial credits include 2008’s Passengers with Anne Hathaway and Patrick Wilson; 2009’s Mother and Child starring Naomi Watts and Annette Bening; and three-time Oscar nominee Albert Nobbs with Glenn Close.

Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor are two half-brothers with a whole lot of problems.
The duo star as the titular Raymond and Ray for the upcoming AppleTV+ dramedy “Raymond & Ray,” premiering October 21 on the streamer. Raymond and Ray come to terms with their estranged father’s death by attending his funeral and dredging up their past — emotionally as well as literally, as the pair grab actual shovels to dig up their father’s grave.
Raymond and Ray then embark on a road trip to get to know their deceased father. Their path leads them to a nurse (Sophie Okonedo) who cared for their dad, as well as their dad’s mistress (Maribel Verdú) and her son (Maxim Swinton), who is their other half-brother. Oscar Nuñez, Vondie Curtis-Hall, and Todd Louiso also star.
“The old man was always screwing with us,” Raymond (McGregor) says to Ray (Hawke) in the trailer.

"We come from chaos… Our father was a monster." Apple TV has unveiled a trailer for Raymond & Ray, best known as the film where Ethan Hawke & Ewan McGregor star as half-brothers. This just premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival a few weeks ago, and will be out for streaming on Apple TV+ in October. It's another collaboration between Colombian filmmaker Rodrigo García and actor Ewan McGregor - they previously made the film Last Days in the Desert together in 2015. Half brothers Raymond and Ray reunite when their estranged father dies—and discover that his final wish was for them to dig his grave. Together, they process who they’ve become as men, both because of their father and in spite of him. The cast includes Maribel Verdú and Sophie Okonedo. It's also produced by Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón. This definitely looks like a festival film, digging deep into buried emotions and family and letting go.

It’s crazy to think that after all these years, actors Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor have never appeared in a movie together. Both of them are terrific character actors, and both of them seem to travel in the same circuit of character-driven independent cinema usually helmed by auteurs. Well, humanist filmmaker Rodrigo Garcia, known for “Last Days In The Desert” with McGregor and films like “Albert Nobbs” and “Mother and Child,” has the inspired idea to put them together as estranged brothers in the new Apple TV+ drama, “Raymond & Ray.”

There are types all over Rodrigo García’s Raymond & Ray. There’s Raymond (Ewan McGregor), the more stuck-up type who only wears business-casual. There’s Raymond’s half brother Ray (Ethan Hawke), the relaxed, too-cool-for-school guy exuding the energy of someone who always leaves their shirts unbuttoned. And there’s their abusive father, whose recent death brings the duo together in order to attend the funeral. He’s the type of shitty dad we’ve seen before in movies—except here his spirit looms over everyone in the ways he impacted each character’s lives, for better or worse. The opening minutes, where Raymond convinces Ray to go on a road trip to the funeral home, lays out all the necessary exposition for the all-too-familiar story of siblings learning to live their own lives, with plenty of drama and laughs along the way.
