It’s always fun to see some of our horror heroes appear outside of their given role as it were. We’ve seen Stephen King appear in tons of his story’s adaptations, but he also showed up in things not associated with him like Sons of Anarchy. Sure, you get athletes that try acting, some that are even successful, but how about our beloved horror hosts? Many of them only stayed on the critique end of the movie spectrum but a couple have made the jump. Joe Bob Briggs appeared in a segment of the recent Scare Package as well as a deleted scene from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 but never got the spotlight in his own feature length film.

A witty memoir of the Covid plague days. It is fun and funny and commemorates a time we will all remember forever. A great gift, clever and gay with illustrations that fit the lyrical text perfectly. Both children and adults will love it.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Imagine, if you will, a cheap, second-rate sound stage dressed to resemble a typical Old West-style township, complete with poorly constructed storefronts and several idiosyncratic ceiling fans mounted from a selection of elevated planes at various intervals up and down this impossibly familiar setting. However, instead of cowboys and Indians and hookers and gunslingers and a drunken George Takei roaming the streets, you have cowboys and Indians and hookers and empaths and aliens and a drunken George Takei spouting incredibly awful “Star Trek”-related puns to the stunning sound of suffocating silence. Is this skewed sci-fi scenario a delicious fever dream perpetrated by office-born illnesses, you ask? Not quite. In fact, all of this giggly nonsense can be found lurking within the folds of director Sam Irvin’s 1994 impossibly wonky Full Moon effort “Oblivion”, a story so monumentally epic that it became necessary to split the tale into two complete feature-length productions.

Fans of Full Moon might be happy to hear that Sam Irvin's 1994 cowboys and aliens yarn Oblivion is getting the royal treatment from Shout! Factory in July. A wise move considering a certain other film involving Cowboys and Aliens is coming out around that time. Maybe you've heard of it?
Synopsis:
Zack Stone must return to Oblivion after his father is killed by the evil Red Eye. Zack is a pacifist but Oblivion needs a new sheriff to foil Red Eye and his gang of hellions.
No news on the bonuses yet, but since it's not part of a two pack and considering the great work they've been doing on their Roger Corman stuff of late i imagine it'll come with some nice extras for fans.
You can pre-order Oblivion here.

Back in 1994 there was a very real movie called 'Oblivion', starring Richard Joseph Paul, Jackie Swanson and Andrew Divoff, among many other people you've probably never heard of (except for maybe Isaac Hayes and George Takei, who ad-libbed a number of 'Star Trek' jokes found in the movie ). In the film, Paul played Zack Stone, a cowboy who returns to the seedy town of Oblivion after his father is killed by the villainous Red Eye. Can Zack step up and become the town's new sheriff in order to rid it of Red Eye and his evil gang of aliens?
Produced with a budget of around 2.5 million, 'Oblivion' came with the tagline: "On this planet, it's Cowboys and Aliens", which is comical, of course, because in 2011 we actually have a film coming out called 'Cowboys & Aliens'. Based on the...

Bette Davis and Joan Crawford (right) in Baby Jane
How's this for a provocative take on Joan Crawford? Although she is one of the most-written-about women of the 20th century (and the subject of the most famous celebrity tell-all of all time, Mommie Dearest, written by her daughter Christina), much of what was written about her was ... an outright lie, or at least partially wrong.
That's the very interesting perspective behind Possessed: The Life of Joan Crawford by Donald Spoto (William Morrow, $25.99).
Spoto is a long-time biography veteran with dozens of other titles to his name (about Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and many others). But he seems to have a particular affinity for Joan, and even opens the book with her very kind and detailed response to a fan letter he wrote to her when he was eleven years old.
What's been written about Joan that isn't true?...
