So far, there hasn't been a lot of films that can be called as "events" in Hollywood and Canada. Despite a few weaknesses in its plot, Derrick Borte's The Joneses is, so far, one of the most clever films from 2010. It's just too bad that the film didn't get a wide release.
Steve (David Duchovny) and Kate Jones (Demi Moore) form a perfect couple. Along with their teenagers - Jenn (Amber Heard) and Mick (Ben Hollingsworth) - they make people in their suburb green of envy. In fact, while Kate looks well-dressed, Steve looks like a wealthy businessman who's got the latest "toys", a big house and a beautiful wife. As for Mick and Jenn, they're very popular in their school, because many students want to have what Mick and Jenn have.
Scratch a little bit and you get a totally different picture: the Joneses are not a family.

Depending on how one looks at it, The Joneses was released in the best time or the worst time. It takes the notion of “having everything won't make you happy” and turns it inside out on itself. It's a dark look at a picturesque, upscale neighborhood that, like most neighborhoods—if not all—is hellbent on having the best and newest of anything you can name: cars, golf clubs, clothing, makeup, video games, frozen food, the list goes on.
Providing direction for their shopping is the new and mysterious family on the block, the Joneses. The audience can tell immediately something is not ordinary when Mr. Steve Jones (David Duchovny) tells Mrs. Kate Jones (Demi Moore) that they will “do some major damage in this town.” In the back seat are two younger Joneses, Mick (Ben Hollingsworth) and Jenn (Amber Heard). Their idiosyncrasies are never realized by their neighbors, however,...

I’d not really heard much about The Joneses before I sat down to watch it. I had a feeling it was going to be one of those movies that you’re desperate to get to the end of but I was pleasantly surprised and will definitely be recommended this to friends (and you, the lovely readers of HeyUGuys!).
The Joneses sees David Duchovny and Demi Moore back on the big screen after what I think must be a few years for them both. It also stars Amber Heard, Gary Cole, Ben Hollingsworth, Glenne Headly, Lauren Hutton, Chris Williams, Catherine Dyer, Robert Pralgo, Justin Price, Christine Evangelista and is directed by Derrick Borte.
Synopsis: Perfect couple Steve (Duchovny) and Kate Jones (Moore), and their gorgeous teenage children Jenn (Amber Heard) and Mick (Ben Hollingsworth), are the envy of their posh, suburban neighbourhood filled with mansions and all the trappings of the upper middle class.

The Joneses
Directed by: Derrick Borte
Cast: David Duchovny, Demi Moore, Gary Cole, Ben Hollingsworth, Amber Heard
Running Time: 1 hr 35 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: April 16, 2010
Plot: A family of four moves in to an upper-class gated community and immediately starts putting on a show with all of their new toys and fancy things. They seem perfect and so do their things, so what’s their secret? You’ll have to try and keep up.
Who’S It For? This is a good adult comedy with a great look into the lives of the upper-class and their marketing influences.
Expectations: I knew very little about this film except for Duchovny and Moore being in it. So for me, I didn’t know if I was watching a comedy, thriller or what.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
David Duchovny as Steve Jones: Duchovny is perfectly cast as a car-salesman-turned-more in this film.

Chicago – Introduced with one of the easier movie pundit headlines ever, “The Joneses” indeed cannot keep up with itself, despite a sharp script and the plausible efforts of David Duchovny and Demi Moore.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
David Duchovny plays Steve Jones, the perfect modern father who practices his golf swing as much as his parenting. He is partnered with Demi Moore as Kate Jones, the sleek lady-who-lunches, with her finger on the pulse of the new town the Joneses have moved to, complete with their high school age children, Jenn (Amber Heard) and Mick (Ben Hollingsworth).
There is something odd about this family unit, with their perfect look and effortless material richness. Almost unfairly it seems, they have everything. But behind this mask of perfection is the awful truth – the Joneses are planted marketing hucksters, a fake family whose sole purpose is to “suggest” the latest and greatest products to their social...

Back in 2003, CBS' 60 Minutes reported on how marketers dispatched young and attractive hired guns to promote a new video-game product called the "P-5 Glove". No sales pitch was made from behind a store counter. Instead, the handpicked team conspicuously used the P-5 Glove in crowded locations like Starbucks coffee shops in downtown Manhattan. When unwitting onlookers asked about the product, they were told all about the wonderful new gadget and encouraged to tell their friends. This is marketing by masquerade, or stealth marketing.
Seven years later and stealth marketing is still thriving, albeit covertly. It is a concept that intrigued filmmaker Derrick Borte. As someone who had worked in commercial advertising, he was aware of the undercover methods employed by admen to sell almost anything. Also inspired by reality TV, he penned a script that tackles these issues with comedic glee and thoughtful characterization.

Demi Moore plays a wife and mother in The Joneses, and "plays" is the operative word. Not only does Moore act the part of a character named Kate Jones in the thin satire opening this weekend, but Kate (if that's even her real name) is herself a fiction, an imposter housewife played by an employee of an insidious marketing company. Accessorized with a fake husband (David Duchovny) and two fake young-adult children, our "Kate" has got a job to do: She and her photogenic all-American "family" must, by flaunting their enviable lifestyle, persuade everyone who ogles their beauty (as well...

Why there were a few scattered empty seats left at the world premiere of "Micmacs," I don't know. This is Jean-Pierre Jeunet, dammit, and after putting the excess of "A Very Long Engagement" behind him, he arrived in Toronto with a leaner and meaner comedy that seems to have been designed as a playground for his visual ingenuity and boundless imagination.
His partner in crime, the French star Dany Boon ("My Best Friend"), stars as Bazil, a video store clerk who's introduced to us playfully mouthing along to the dialogue in "The Big Sleep" before a freak gun accident leaves him with a bullet lodged in his brain. (The operating surgeon flips a coin to decide whether to keep it in or remove it and risk putting him into a coma.) Already having lost his father to a landmine during war, Bazil becomes an unlikely peace activist, igniting a feud...
