Cauleen Smith’s capricious, slyly resourceful DIY feature debut, Drylongso, follows photography student Pica (Toby Smith) as she struggles to find her artistic voice in a school whose methodology is disconnected from the harsh realities of late-’90s Oakland. Countless Black men in her neighborhood have been victimized by police and gang violence or mercilessly swallowed by the prison industrial complex, and now there’s a serial killer on the loose targeting Black youth. In the film’s first scene, Pica even witnesses another young woman, Tobi (April Barnett), get beaten up in front of her house and abandoned by her boyfriend (Timothy Braggs).
Pica copes with, and confronts, these various forms of violence by taking Polaroid photos of as many Black men as she can, explaining to Tobi, whom she soon befriends, that it’s because they’re becoming an endangered species. A supportive teacher, Mr. Yamada (Salim Akil...

The Game is over, for a second time. Paramount+ has cancelled the revival series, so there are no plans for a third season, at least on the streaming service.
A sequel to the original 2006-15 comedy series, The Game was executive produced by original series creator Mara Brock Akil, showrunner and writer Devon Greggory, Salim Akil, and original executive producer Kelsey Grammer and Tom Russo.
The show stars legacy cast members Wendy Raquel Robinson and Hosea Chanchez, with new players Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez, Adriyan Rae, Vaughn Hebron, and Analisa Velez. The series features a mix of the original cast and new players to offer a modern examination of Black culture through the prism of pro football. The characters tackle racism, sexism, classism, and more as they fight for fame, fortune, respect, and love.

HBO Max has cooked up a slate of several classic films as well as a few newer ones arriving this January. “The Menu” (2022) arrived early in the month after releasing theatrically in November before Thanksgiving. Danny DeVito’s “Matilda” (1996) can contend with Netflix’s new movie musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book. And while Tom Hanks’ latest role “A Man Called Otto” has hit the box office, several of his films have landed at various streamers if you’re hankering for more after the tear-jearking feature film.
Hitting the sweet spot for dog movie lovers is “Marley and Me,” starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, and the animated wonder “The Book of Life” is also newly added.
Here are some of the best new movies to stream on HBO Max in January 2023.

Completed in 1930, the grandly proportioned house was built for prominent L.A. developer Joseph A. DeBell — he gifted 100 acres to the city of Burbank in 1954, which he then developed into the DeBell Golf Course, and tax records show the nearly two-third-acre spread was sold by real estate developer and hospitality entrepreneur Lorenzo Boucetta and his wife Kaya Boucetta. It’s nowhere near the highest price ever paid for a single-family home in L.A.’s historic and historically hoity-toity Hancock Park neighborhood — that honor goes to a the baronial red-brick Tudor Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins sold in early 2020 for $19 million — but the recent $13.8 million sale of a fashionably rehabbed Italian Renaissance Revival-style mansion that anchors a prominent corner of the exclusive neighborhood does represent the to-date highest amount paid this year for a single-family home in that particularly fancy-pants part of town.

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from tonight’s series finale of The CW’s Black Lightning.
On Monday, Black Lightning came to the end of its four-season run on the CW, signing off with a passing of the torch.
When series finale “The Book of Resurrection: Chapter Two: Closure” opens, it looks like our hero Black Lightning (Cress Williams)—aka Jefferson Pierce—might soon be shuffling off this mortal coil. Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) has the superhero right where he wants him—namely, in a coffin buried underground.
Fear not, though. In the end, Black Lightning is able to escape by harnessing his powers in a way he’s never been able to before. Tobias, meanwhile, ends up dead, after he’s thrown out his office window, impaled and electrocuted by Black Lightning.
With his epic battle for the future of Freeland over, Pierce finds himself in a festive mood,...

For four years, Black Lightning has positioned itself as a show larger and greater than its titular character’s super powers.
It was a series about hope, the Black community and family. And when the CW series came to an end on Monday, those same themes emerged as the Pierces regained their super powers and took down the bad guys. Before Jeff/Black Lightning could dig his way out of the grave Tobias trapped him in, buried alive, he had to mentally confront his father’s murder as well as the murder he himself committed as a kid, even though...

Black Lightning‘s Jordan Calloway broke the news to his fans that his Painkiller spinoff will not be moving forward at The CW as it defines its 2021 fall schedule. Shorty after The CW revealed what is and isn’t in the works, Calloway spoke fans and followers via Instagram TV.
“Painkiller will not be going forward, so let’s rip that band-aid off now,” he said.
In addition to the Black Lightning spinoff, nun dramedy Our Ladies of Brooklyn will not move forward at The CW.
The spinoff would have seen Calloway reprise his role as the titular character while Black Lightning showrunner Salim Akil will write, exec produce and direct. Set to join the cast were Sibongile Mlambo, Alexander Hodge and James Roch. The planted pilot spinoff aired as the seventh episode of Black Lightning’s fourth season.

Black Lightning is back for its fourth and final season. The CW announced in November 2020 that they would not be renewing the Black-led superhero drama for another season. We still have the 13-episode final season to look forward to, however, and the potential of a Black Lightning spin-off. In a previous statement, showrunner Salim Akil said of the latter: “While Season Four may be the end of one journey, I’m extremely excited to usher in a new chapter and continued collaboration with The CW as we tell the story of Painkiller.”
For now, though, Black Lighting is back. Here’s what we thought of the Season 4 premiere. And here’s what to expect from next episode, “The Book of Reconstruction: Chapter Two”…
“The war between the 100 and the Kobra Cartel rages on; Lynn continues to be concerned about Jefferson; Jennifer’s curiosity is piqued by a new boy at school.

As the summer of racial reckoning played out across our screens with people filling the streets to protest the police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others, Black Lightning creator Salim Akil watched and thought deeply about what he could do.
Fans of the CW series learned of Akil’s eventual decision when the Season 4 opener premiered Monday night. Titled “The Book of Reconstruction: Chapter One,” the episode showed Jefferson Pierce aka Black Lightning (played by Cress Williams) reacting to two white cops harassing and frisking a Black teen who had been innocently walking down the street holding a violin.

That's what Jefferson Pierce seems to think in the trailer for Black Lightning Season 4.
If you watch Black Lightning online, you know Henderson was killed off at the close of Black Lightning Season 3, which weighs heavily on Jefferson throughout the trailer.
