One of the most famous moments in TV history came on September 26, 1962 with the airing of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" episode "Never Name a Duck," the first episode of the second season. During the opening credits of the show, Rob Petrie (Van Dyke) entered through his front door while the upbeat theme music (composed by Earle Hagan) played on the soundtrack. The announcer shouted out the names of the stars: Dick Van Dyke, Rose Marie, Morey Amsterdam, Larry Matthews, and Mary Tyler Moore. Rob stepped out of a foyer and immediately tripped over a large ottoman in his way. Van Dyke, a brilliant physical comedian, tumbled all the way over, rolling over his shoulder and landing on his back. It remains, to this day, one of the most celebrated pratfalls in the history of the medium.

For those of a certain age, Pat Carroll will forever be synonymous with her voice role as the fabulous sea witch Ursula in Disney's animated "The Little Mermaid." However, for those of another certain age, their memories of Carroll will forever be entwined with her career as a mainstay of 20th-century television comedy thanks to her appearances on variety shows like "The Carol Burnett Show" and her stint as Shirley Feeney's ever-critical mother on "Laverne & Shirley."
Or maybe you're a weirdo who was reared on animated "Garfield" holiday specials and associate her with Jon Arbuckle's piano-pounding, chainsaw-swinging grandmother with the abs of steel. I wouldn't know anything about that.
As fate would have it, Carroll nearly voiced Jane Jetson on Hanna-Barbera's futuristic cartoon sitcom "The Jetsons," a role that would've existed at the nexus between her animated ventures and her run as a linchpin of live-action TV burlesque...

Best known as gag writer Buddy Sorrell on The Dick Van Dyke Show, Morey Amsterdam wrote, produced and starred in this low budget black and white comedy made as the Van Dyke show was nearing its end. A blend of Catskill one-liners and outdated topical humor, it stars two other Van Dyke veterans, Rose Marie, Richard Deacon and a host of celebrity cameos including Forrest Tucker who shot his segment during his lunch break on F-Troop.

Family comedies have gone to Schitt. “Schitt’s Creek” that is. The little Canadian comedy series that airs on Pop and streams on Netflix has hit Emmy paydirt in its sixth and final season, earning 15 Emmy nominations including best comedy series, actor for Eugene Levy, actress for Catherine O’Hara, supporting actor, writer and director for Dan Levy and supporting actress for Annie Murphy.
Sort of a reverse “The Beverly Hillbillies,” the series follows a seriously vapid, dysfunctional family, John and Moira Rose and their adult children David and Alexis, who lose their family fortune and end up living in a rundown motel in Schitt’s Creek, a tiny rural town which is the only asset they still own. And “Schitt’s Creek” is a family affair with Eugene Levy creating the series with his son Dan, who plays his eldest on the show. And the comedy legend’s daughter Emily also is...

Comedy legend and TV pioneer Carl Reiner died at 98, according to Variety. His assistant, Judy Nagy, said he was with his family when he died of natural causes at his home in Beverly Hills on Monday night.
Reiner was one of the true greats. He helped shape comedy on television from the early golden era. Filmed comedy would not be the same without him. Even standup comedy owes him a great debt. There are sandwiches named after him in kosher delis around the world. Reiner was always beloved, and forever acting. He was instantly popular from the moment he appeared on Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows in 1950. He and Mel Brooks brought a party gag to national prominence they created the “2,000 Year Old Man” routine. He was veteran conman Saul Bloom in Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven movie franchise, played Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer’s stepfather on Two and a Half Men.

Carl Reiner didn’t mean to create The Dick Van Dyke Show — or, rather, he didn’t mean to create a show for Dick Van Dyke. When he sat down to write what was then called Head of the Family, Reiner was basing its hero, Rob Petrie, on his own experiences as a suburban dad and writer for Sid Caesar’s sketch-comedy shows. So who better to play Rob than himself? Reiner starred in the pilot episode, with Barbara Britton as Rob’s wife, Laura, and Morty Gunty and Sally Rogers...

If you don’t like the humor in the 1966 comedy Don’t Worry We’ll Think of a Title, you don’t have enough borscht under your belt. Morey Amsterdam co-wrote it and starred in it, so you might expect it to be 83 minutes of zingers aimed at Richard Deacon’s invisible hairline. There is a plot, but character names like Charlie Yuckapuck and Crumworth Raines may actually overshadow the storyline.
It is probably on this list of movies you’ve never heard of because trying to find this movie’s online streaming home is enough to drive a pandemic shut-in to drink. As long as we’re celebrating – or whatever – uncork a bottle from the Catskills. Tannerville’s...

All-round entertainer whose best-known role was as Sally Rogers in the American television sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show
As Sally Rogers in The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rose Marie, who has died aged 94, was known and cherished by the myriad television viewers who tuned in every week from 1961 to 1966 to watch the landmark sitcom.
Rose Marie, playing one of three comedy writers on the fictional Alan Brady Show, felt she had struck a blow for gender equality on American television because Sally was not a wife, mother or secretary but a writer equal to Rob Petrie (Van Dyke) and Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam). Witty and self-deprecating, desperately seeking a husband, Sally acted as a balance between Buddy, the “joke machine”, and the accident-prone Rob.

'Tis the season to annoy everyone by using "'tis the season" way too many times when talking about holiday stuff. Halloween hasn't even happened yet, but the Christmas decorations are already taking over drug stores so ABC is just going ahead and announcing its 2015 holiday lineup. It's something to look forward to after the candy is gone, anyway, and since the "Toy Story 20th Anniversary Special" and "It's Your 50th Christmas, Charlie Brown" are involved, you should definitely mark your calendars.

There are classic TV shows that are products of their time and then there are others that are simply timeless, and while normally a sitcom can be easily dated by a simpler, kinder sense of humor (especially in a modern era where cruder, ruder elements are common) occasionally it can be so well written that the jokes are just as funny 50 years later. The latter case applies to The Dick Van Dyke Show throughout its entire run of five seasons. It was witty from start to finish and its stellar cast of Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Morey Amsterdam, and Rose Marie gave it some of the best comic timing ever. The fourth season saw the show at the top of its game with stories that have long since been imitated countless times but never duplicated with such hilarity.

The Dick Van Dyke Show, “The Sick Boy and the Sitter”
Written by Carl Reiner
Directed by Sheldon Leonard
Aired on October 3rd, 1961 on CBS
The Dick Van Dyke Show is one of the most enduring sitcoms of television history. While most series fall from recognition shortly after their finales, it remains a staple of Best Comedy lists to this day. The premise is very straightforward- Dick Van Dyke stars as Rob Petrie, a comedy writer at the fictional The Alan Brady Show. He’s married to Laura, played by Mary Tyler Moore, and the two have a son, Ritchie, and live in New Rochelle. We follow Rob at home and at work, where he often shares scenes with fellow writers Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam) and Sally Rogers (Rose Marie) and occasionally with their straight-man producer, Mel Cooley, played by Richard Deacon.

What happened to the good old fashioned sitcoms that used to have stellar one-liners? Today's takes on that classic formula, like Mike & Molly or Two and a Half Men, all feel like carbon copies recycling jokes originally used in better shows. Yet, when you go back and watch classic episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show the comedy feels comparatively fresh and vibrant, firing five jokes a minute with a cast that squeezes the greatest potential from each setup. What got lost in the mix over the last 50 years? Whatever it was, it's been preserved in its entirety in The Dick Van Dyke Show with its stellar cast of Dick Van Dyke himself, Mary Tyler Moore, Rose Marie, and Morey Amsterdam, and writing that's a seamless blend of verbal and slapstick (mostly in Van Dyke's facial expressions and exaggerated body language) comedy.

Big kudos to the fine folks at MGM Limited Edition DVD-r! They’ve dug deep in the vaults for a true oddity in the world of cinema and television ( sitcoms, to be more precise ) ! I will tell anyone who asks that my absolute favorite TV situation comedy of all time is that early sixties gem ” The Dick Van Dyke Show” ( desert island, only one TV comedy, no hesitation! ). Well one of the few people with even more admiration and affection for this bit of comic perfection is comedy writer and pop culture master Mark Evanier. One of the sites I’ve bookmarked ( and if you love entertainment you should too ) is his website/ blog newsfromme.com . In 2007 he alerted his readers to Don”T Worry We’LL Think Of A Title was airing on the Turner Classic Movie cable channel. He had seen it with his family while they were...

Legendary actors Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke stopped by "Rachael Ray" Thursday (May 12) for a "Dick Van Dyke Show" reunion. Dick was the original guest and Rachael surprised her audience (and Dick too!) with Mary dropping by to the recreated "Dick Van Dyke Show" living room.
Before Mary came out, Rachael and Dick looked back at his iconic role in "Mary Poppins" as chimney sweep Bert. He relayed a story of being in the market a few weeks ago when a mom told her daughter that he was Bert and the little girl ran over, then came back to her little brother and delightfully exclaimed, "I met Bert's grandpa!"
When Mary joined them, they reminisce about how groundbreaking "The Dick Van Dyke Show" was, especially with Laurie Petrie not being the typical housewife seen up to the on television - wearing pants! Oh, the horror!

The theme from 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' is easily recognizable to TV fans, but the song's forgotten lyrics are probably less so. On 'Today' (weekdays, 7Am Et on NBC), Dick Van Dyke himself sang the full lyric to the delight of Matt Lauer.
Van Dyke ran through the entire song without so much as a stumble, easily recalling the lyrics which were written by co-star Morey Amsterdam, but were never actually used on the show.

Celebrity Bowling—that unabashedly silly but undeniably entertaining weekly TV show that ran for eight years in the 1970s (from 1971 though ’78) is coming to DVD From S’More Entertainment.
The Celebrity Bowling 3-dvd Collector’s Set will be available on June 14.
Hosted by Jed Allan (CSI: Miami), Celebrity Bowling featured a pair of two-celebrity teams competing on regulation size bowling lanes that were actually installed inside the show’s studio at L.A.’s Kttv Channel 5.
The rules of the game were known as “best ball”—each team member would take a shot on their own lane. If neither bowled a strike, then whoever rolled the worse shot would try to put up a spare on their partner’s lane. Winning teams garnered prizes (usually appliances, but occasionally even cars!) for audience members both present and sitting at home.

Dagmar, the buxom blonde actress who became one of American television's first sex symbols on the pioneering NBC late-night show Broadway Open House, has died at the age of 79. Dagmar, who had been ill in recent years, died on October 9 at her home in West Virginia. Born Virginia Ruth Egnor, she became an overnight sensation as the sexy dumb blonde who appeared with comedians Jerry Lester and Morey Amsterdam on vaudeville-style Broadway Open House, an early 1950s forerunner to The Tonight Show. She also played a nurse on Milton Berle's Texaco Star Theater, briefly hosted her own TV show, Dagmar's Canteen, and was a regular panelist on ABC's Masquerade Party. Dagmar married three times, but outlived all three of her husbands, including actor Danny Dayton and bandleader Dick Hinds. She is survived by three sisters, three brothers, an aunt and numerous nieces and nephews.
