The Fire This Time 10-Minute Play Festival (2016) Krainer Theater, NYC January 21-February 6, 2016
The Obie Award-winning The Fire This Time Festival, a showcase of "early-career playwrights of African and African American descent," has returned to the East Village for its seventh iteration. Its 10-minute play festival features a strong slate of seven new short plays that demonstrate the festival's mission statement, that "[t]he African American experience is not represented...by one voice or one style," with tremendous impact.
The opening piece is clarity, by Korde Arrington Tuttle. An often-poetic monologue, clarity is spoken by Georgia resident Cameron, read on opening night by the playwright himself, in anticipation of his wedding. As he discusses his relationship with the man whom he loves, Cameron touches on the competing complexities of individual, familial, and racial identities. His refrain of "just to be clear" echoes his own search for clarity in these matters, as well...

Survivor is a film so lazy the only way to rationalise its existence is to imagine the crew only had a long weekend to make it. It’s one of those cheap spy thrillers that fills out the few screens at the multiplex not taken by big budget spectacle in the summer months and the film has seemingly no qualms with aiming that low. Not only is the acting phoned in and the plot paper-thin, but the whole production is so irritatingly sloppy that you’d feel robbed if you’d got this from the direct-to-dvd section of Poundland.
The cast feel like they’ve been brought over from a different film by mistake. Milla Jovovich is Kate Abbott, an illustriously regarded American immigration officer, which could be read as an attempt to go against type (if a starring role in one lowest common denominator franchise can be...

House of Good and Evil is a movie we’ve been keeping an eye on since its first appearance in our Indie Spotlight and it’s headed to DVD on April 1st. For the latest installment of our Q&A series, Derek Anderson had a chance to catch up with the movie’s star, Rachel Marie Lewis, to learn about her experience on set:
You’ve played characters in dramas, comedies, and romances, but to my knowledge, your role as Maggie Conley in House of Good and Evil was your first time acting in a horror movie. What was it like to play a character in that genre for the first time?
Rachel Marie Lewis: It was great and certainly stretched me, that’s for sure. Every day was emotionally and physically tedious, so preparation was absolutely crucial.
Your character, Maggie, displays a wide emotional range as she copes...

It’s difficult to forget the past, but that’s what Maggie Conley (Rachel Marie Lewis) and her husband, Chris (Christian Oliver), are trying to do in director David Mun’s feature debut, House of Good and Evil. Maggie and Chris have a particularly haunting past to put behind them, one that includes verbal arguments, physical abuse, and the devastating loss of their unborn child. Intent on starting life anew, Chris and Maggie move out of their apartment in Baltimore and head deep into the Virginia woods to live in a rustic, white clapboard duplex.
The Andersons, an elderly husband and wife living in the other half of the duplex, will be their only neighbors for miles before they move out in a month’s time. Before they can even finish unpacking, though, Maggie realizes the isolated, possibly haunted house actually enables Chris’s hostile nature, putting her sanity and very life in jeopardy.

Everyone loves a good wedding: free booze, awkward speeches and creepy DJs — what more could you want? All too often, however, the invites don't live up to the day. (Seriously, if I open one more shimmering envelope and a sliver of cream-colored tissue paper falls out I'm gonna scream.) So when film buffs throw calligraphy and caution to the wind and opt instead for movie-themed wedding invitations, it's time to celebrate.
That said, not all movie-themed invites are created equal. In fact, they're as varied as the couples who create them. Here's our breakdown of the best and worst announcements honoring the most important day of one's life — well, besides the day the new Monty Python film comes out, that is.

Given the recent surge of 1980s popular culture nostalgia, discussions of that decade’s iconic films unfailingly revert to the unique 1980s teen comedy genre, always dominated by the catalog of John Hughes. But sadly, some outstanding films from that era are overlooked or even forgotten, and all teen movies from this period seem to be unfairly compared to Hughes’s work. One such semi-lost and under-appreciated gem is director Chris Columbus’s delightful 1987 teen comedy “Adventures in Babysitting.”
The movie opens in Chicago’s Oak Park suburb with the pretty, charming, 17-year-old girl next door Chris Parker (Elisabeth Shue) preparing for a romantic evening with her dreamy boyfriend Mike Todwell (Bradley Whitford). Mike finally arrives, only to inform Chris that his younger sister is sick, and that he is unable to take her out. Devastated, Chris mopes in her bedroom, seeking comfort from her band geek friend Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller...

“Deadline”
Last night the boys took a back seat for a special undercover mission by Agent Diana Barrigan (Marsha Thomason). In “Deadline,” Helen Anderson, an aggressive and intense investigative journalist (Jayne Atkinson, 24) receives death threats but refuses the help of the FBI. She’s been investigating P & V pharmaceutical company and their cover up of fatal batch of a new drug that they refused to recall because it was so far in the approval process.
Diana goes in under the guise of an assistant looking for work and despite a tough interview she made it through. Left alone she handled demanding journalist as best as anyone could and behind the scenes, Peter and his team were making it happen. Nice way to double pack on those P & V goons as the baddies; never trust an Asian with the last name of “Sullivan.” I kid, I kid.
It’s always fun...
