A Married Woman (Jean-Luc Godard)
A Married Woman is an often overlooked masterwork from Godard’s most productive period. The plot appears to be simple: Charlotte (Macha Méril) is a young married woman having an affair with an actor. When she discovers that she is pregnant, she must decide which man is the father and which man she will stay with. In Godard’s hands, however, the film, described as a film about a woman’s beauty and the ugliness of her world,...

After the confused revelations of the season 6 finale, Hush Hush Sweet Liars, has Pretty Little Liars lost both its subtext and soul?
This feature contains spoilers for Pretty Little Liars season 6.
The sixth season finale for Pretty Little Liars aired this week, and with it came fresh reveals about secret twins, ludicrously convincing prosthetics and elaborate kidnapping plots. It was sillier than I remember the show ever being, and this is a series that regularly features dead girls coming back to life, cyber-stalkers stealing rotting corpses and storing them in drinks cabinets, and teenage girls commissioning creepy woodsmen to create multiple masks of their own faces.
I love this show. I've written thousands of words about it, meticulously deciphered its mysteries and gotten up at the crack of dawn to watch it just so I wouldn't be spoiled. But even I have to admit that things have been a little off lately,...

Our countdown of the 100 best films of the 21st century continues. This is Part 3 #50 through 26.
Click here for Part 2 (#75-51)!
The first decade and a half of the 21st century has brought a lot of changes to the landscape of film. The advancement and sophistication of computers has made realistic computer generated effects a mainstay in both big-budget and small-budget films. The internet and streaming technologies have given big Hollywood new competition in films produced independently and by non-traditional means. We went from purchasing films on yards of tape to plastic disks, and now we can simply upload them to the cloud. Advertisements for films have reached a higher, more ruthless level where generating hype through trailers and teasers is crucial for a film’s commercial success. Movie attendance has fluctuated along with the economy, but that hasn’t stopped films from breaking box office records,...

Ned is a humble pie maker. He spends his days doing normal pie-maker things like chopping fruit, making crusts, and waking murder victims to ask who killed them so that he can collect the rewards with his Pi partner Emerson Cod. The quiet life.
He is the proud (or often not-so-proud) owner of a magic finger, one that can bring a dead thing back to life with one touch and return it to corpse-hood with a second touch. If he happens to keep the dead thing alive for more than one minute, however, something else must die in its place. These are the rules. Small in number, but large in complexity. Don’t you love a show with a rulebook?
Ned goes around un-deading and re-deading people to his heart’s content until one day he brings back his childhood sweetheart, Charlotte “Chuck” Charles, and can’t bring himself to re-dead her,...

So, you might be familiar with Nxt, the development show for WWE that runs weekly television shows from FullSailUniversity in Florida. The talent down there is currently very good and features a wide array of styles and appearances from its roster. I write the weekly Nxt reviews, here on Nerdly, and with the year now in its final quarter I thought it might be a good time to review the development roster that appears on the Nxt show, and give grades and remarks regarding certain talents.
I will grade each of the following with anything from an A+ down to a F. I’ll explain what each grade means below.
A+ – Beyond ready for the main roster, should be on Raw or Smackdown, now!
A – Ready for the main roster, as soon as possible.
B – Could easily transfer to the main roster, but might need a little work.
C – Needs a little more development,...

Rick Castle finally got the time traveling killer he'd been hoping for in "Time Will Tell."
Below, TV Fanatics Jim Garner, Chandel Charles and Christine Orlando are joined by Angie of the Castle Fan Forum the 12th to debate time travel aspects of this episode, Alexis' future, and what we'd name Castle and Beckett's future children...
-------------------------------------------
Do you believe in the time traveling killer or a more logical explanation?
Jim: I loved that this week's case could actually have a non-logical explanation. After five years of crazy theories, Rick was due for a win - and what a great one it was!
Chandel: I would like to believe in a more logical explanation, but a little imagination never hurt anybody.
Angie: What I love about Castle is that there is always a logical explanation with just the hint that it maybe-kinda-coulda been something else, which is how I usually approach these kinds of mysteries.

Pushing Daisies, “Pie-lette”
Written by Bryan Fuller
Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld
Aired October 2nd, 2007
The facts are these: a series about death, loneliness, romance, PIs, and pie shouldn’t work. Especially on network television. And yet for two seasons, it did. Bryan Fuller’s Pushing Daisies premiered in the fall of 2007 as the highest rated new series, with 13 million viewers tuning in for the pilot, “Pie-lette”. It would eventually drop in the ratings, squeaking out a renewal due to uncertainty over the writers strike before being cancelled the next season, but those who tuned in for that first episode were treated to a delightful, whimsical flight of fancy the likes of which are rarely seen on American television.
Bryan Fuller has a history with darkly comedic, metaphysically tricky shows. His previous series, Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls, both feature their female protagonists dying (or nearly doing so) in the pilot.

We finally know who’s ship outta luck.
Revenge this week returned to the fateful event it teased in the season premiere: the sinking of the Amanda and the demise of at least one person on board. Warning: You may want to don a life vest, so adrift will you be on currents of disbelief at various points during the narrative. You also may want to grab some tissues, because one death — as promised — is a significant one. Now, without further ado, let’s review what went down — besides Jack’s beloved boat – in “Sacrifice.”

Halloween is a month for the macabre, and you know what that means: I'm thinking about Winona Ryder's career. I still have the feathers in my mouth from her traumatizing Black Swan appearance. Shivers. Remember when Natalie Portman won an Oscar for playing a one-dimensional lunatic in what amounted to an overcooked, below-average Bjork video? I'm traumatized by that too.
But more importantly I'm thinking about Heathers, which I proclaim the definitive high school black comedy of all time -- so take that, uh, John Tucker Must Die! In retrospect, the unabashed kookiness of Ryder, Christian Slater, and the titular croquet-loving trio was sort of a slap in the face to the humdrum, half-snarling teens of John Hughes films. With Heathers came a refreshing burst of real cynicism. Smugness. Droopy anarchy. And not the kind that involves punching the air because you locked lips with Molly Ringwald in Saturday detention.

Revenge Season Finale: Did Emily Reach Her Goal? Who's Playing the Revenge Game Now?
Oh my God, Revenge! The show that has consistently delivered twist after turn all season long just finished off its season finale with a bang...literally. Let's recap the milestones in the shocking season finale.
Emily managed to "steal" the evidence against Conrad and his co-conspirators by telling Daniel that a white-haired man had broken into her house and swiped it. Naturally, Daniel headed straight for Conrad, telling his father everything.
Meanwhile, Emily attempted to get into the information herself, but found it locked tight. What's a girl to do? Call Nolan for help, of course! But, as Emily soon discovered, Nolan had been kidnapped by the white-haired man (who I'm going to call Whm until I figure out his name, because I can't remember it right now). Telling Whm over the phone that she was...

She scored a touchdown during halftime at the Super Bowl, and now Madonna is properly tuned-up to take her show on the road.
On Monday, the CEO of Live Nation Global Touring announced that Madonna would launch her 2012 world tour in support of her upcoming Mdna album on May 29 with a show in Tel Aviv, Israel. He told Billboard magazine that the outing will be the singer's most extensive tour in terms of total dates and will take her to Australia for the first time in 20 years.
She'll play a combination of arenas, stadiums and outdoor sites, hitting 26 European and Middle Eastern markets (including London, Paris, Barcelona, Milan, Abu Dhabi and Berlin) before turning her attention to the U.S. Her North American shows start with an August 28 gig in Philadelphia and include 25 dates.

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this March. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.8 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant pile of Christmas tinsel since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The first fill-in artist on Justice League, although Gene Ha is certainly no slouch in that department. We also have new writers on Firestorm and Green Arrow, new backups in Justice League and Action Comics, and the DC 52 hits lucky number 7.
Shall we see who is the fariest of them all? Oh indeedy, let’s do!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

If Winona Ryder gets involved in anything these days, I'm instantly excited. I've been a fan of hers since Beetlejuice came out. I'm not one of those chicks that lost their shit over Mermaids. Most girls I knew growing up that also liked Ryder liked her because of Mermaids. I just didn't connect as well to Charlotte as I did Lydia. The last thing I saw Ryder in was J.J. Abrams' Star Trek as Spock's mom and then in Black Swan. Now it looks like she's going to play the wife of Michael...

It wouldn't be far-fetched to suggest that the entire series Revenge is about trust or, at least, the lack of it. After all, Emily is taking her revenge against the very people who turned against her father and betrayed his trust. Episode 2 of Revenge, airing tonight, is simply entitled "Trust" and I think it perfectly displays that word in a variety of forms.
The Betrayal of Trust
Once again, we're presented with a character who betrayed Emily's father. This episode introduces us to "Uncle" Bill Harmon. Bill is a hedge fund manager who used to be a family friend of the Clarkes. In fact, he was the very person who gave young Amanda her dog, Sammy. But, like the other conspirators, Bill testified against David at his trial. We didn't get much clarification as to why Lydia agreed to testify, but it becomes clear later in this episode why Bill turned against his friend.

In the Revenge series premiere we were introduced to Emily Thorne and her friends in the Hamptons. The problem is, all of it is a lie. Emily is actually Amanda Clarke and used to vacation in the Hamptons as a child, until Victoria and Conrad Grayson - and their friends - framed her father and had him sent to prison. Amanda spent the next 17 years without a family, until she finally came of age and set out on her plan to destroy the very people who had betrayed her father.
Newly armed with wealth, courtesy of Nolan, an internet entrepreneur, Amanda reinvented herself as "Emily Thorne" and eventually made her way back to the Hamptons. There, she started inserting herself into society, ruled by her neighbor Victoria Grayson. She set her sights on Victoria's son and set up Victoria's friend Lydia (who was having an affair with Victoria's husband). Not...

During Summer 2011 -- winding down at last! -- we've been asking Tfe readers to choose the most memorable Best Actress nominated film characters. Which film characters have you taken into your hearts and headspace most fully? Who is always popping into mind unbidden? Below are the latest voting results for August's polls covering the 1960s & 1970s (previous results: 1980s and 1991-2010). We used five year intervals for voting and asked readers to choose the 5 most memorable characters from each group of 25 Oscar nominees.
If you're looking for these polls to provide a "face" of an era it looks like Julie Andrews wins the early 60s -- she was thoroughly modern back then! -- and Faye Dunaway takes over from there for a long run at the top (1966-1980) [* indicates that it was an Oscar winning role.]

Round 1 of March Sadness is complete, and with more than 50,000 votes cast and almost as many “how could you put Sad Movie X against Also Sad Movie Y you f***ing monster!!!” complaints, the March Sadness Bracket now looks like this (click to enlarge): Schindler’s List and Bambi were the biggest winners (interesting sentence to type), running away with 87.8% and 85.8% of the vote respectively, while the tightest contests saw The Wrestler out-grapping The Iron Giant by 51.83%, Dumbo edging Edward Scissorhands by an earlobe (51.6%), and in the round’s closest match, Toy Story 3 out-innocence-losting Titanic by a tight 50.88% majority. We waved goodbye to some not-sad-enough classics in Round 1 like Casablanca and It’s A Wonderful Life, some unbearably sad but underrepresented films like Dancer in the Dark and The House Of Sand And Fog, and some supersad films stuck in tragically unfortunate matchups like Terms of Endearment and American History X.

It’s Day 2 of March Sadness, the tournament of 64 sad films to determine once and for all (in a subjective, totally interpretable manner) which is the saddest movie of all time. Voting for Brackets C & D is now open, after the jump. Once again, here’s the full bracket: You can still vote for Brackets A & B from yesterday – some of the matchups are still reasonably close (*Cough* *Cough* Dancer In The Dark is really effing sad), but the voting for all of Round 1 will conclude tomorrow morning so we can move on to Round 2 for the weekend. Remember, the only criteria is “Which Movie Is Sadder?”, not “Which Movie Is Better” – how you determine “sadder,” though, is up to you. Also, if you’re not familiar with either movie in a particular matchup or don’t feel sad-strongly towards one option or the other, you don’t have to vote in all the matchups.

Black Swan is the fifth feature to come from the lunatic vision of Darren Aronofsky and with his first Oscar nomination pending, let's look back on his career. While Natalie Portman is front and center for the entire hit movie and Mickey Rourke had a similarly feature-length closeup in The Wrestler, Aronofsky is the star of all five pictures. If not, he has to be considered the co-lead. He's not invisible as a director is the point even though he's not onscreen. But which faces has he used the most to sell his masterpieces and/or follies (depending on your point of view)?
Left: Aronofsky; Right: His parents (I believe) in The Wrestler
Let's investigate.
The Darren Aronofsky Acting Hierarchy
(Quantitatively Speaking)
5 Films
One character actor has appeared in every Darren Aronofsky feature (and so has Aronofsky's dad, no joke). Will they both appear in The Wolverine, Hugh Jackman's...

2010 has gone by in a blur and another year at the movies has come and gone. So may films that seemed promising have turned out to be disappointments and the surprises audiences received were few and far between. But the past is the past, it's time to look onward as a fresh new year begins and hopes are raised for it to be an exciting time in the world of cinema. Kicking off the Winter season are a number of films described in detail and listed below:january 7Season Of The WITCHNicolas Cage stars alongside Ron Perlman as knights who return from the Crusades to find their homeland ruined by the Black Plague. Two church elders accuse a girl (Claire Foy) of being a witch and being responsible for the destruction. They command Behmen and Felson to transport her to a monastery so the monks there can lift her curse from the land.

The Independent Film Festival of Boston kicks off on Wednesday. If you're in the New England area, this is the best film festival around, having supplanted the fall Boston Film Festival as the one to be at after less than a decade of existence. It offers a great opportunity to see a lot of great independent films, a few of which are premieres, and several of which played earlier at Sundance or at South by Southwest. IFFBoston, however, offers a more low-key opportunity to see those same movies without having to deal with the massive crowds or the lengthy lines. Even two days before the festival begins, you can still purchase tickets and walk up, half an hour before showtime, and get a seat. Most of the films play in Davis Square (in Somerville), which is the second best neighborhood in metro Boston, save for Brookline (where some of the other films will be showing,...

Through her life, Greta Garbo was famously for saying she vanted to be alone. But even almost 20 years after her death, we just can’t seem to let her have her wish. With a life and career as rich and interesting as Garbo’s, how could we? Well now, a new film project will delve further into the private life of the screen icon.
Tapped to play the reclusive screen icon is relative unknown Swedish-born, New York-based actress Anna-Karin Eskilsson. She looks a little like Garbo and Padma Lakshmi had a love child, no?
Eskilsson has had small, largely cameo roles in films like The Wrestler (as a flirt in the supermarket) and Sex and the City movie (as one of Charlotte’s girlfriends). Before being tapped for the lead in the new biopic she was a bartender at the Empire State Building Bar. From cocktail slinger to screen icon,...
