Hailing from Fayetteville, Arkansas, three-piece hard rock unit Spoken have been playing since the late '90s, and over that period their sound has evolved from rapcore/metal to a more melodic, pop-based hard rock. Their ambitious new concept album Illusion, which dropped earlier this year, represents a creative turning point for the band and has won over a new group of fans. Just before they set out on a tour this month with Volbeat and Danko Jones, we caught up with the Spoken crew – frontman Matt Baird, bassist Ryan Pei and drummer Oliver Crumpton – to talk about the reinvention of their sound, the making of the new album, and the influence of Rob Zombie on their early career.
