At the British Screen Advisory Council (Bsac) conference in London yesterday, a panel of industry experts were asked to outline the challenges facing the UK’s creative industries.
Bsac deputy chair and the session’s host Ajay Chowdhury kicked off proceedings by celebrating the “huge success” of the UK’s audiovisual industries, talking up the 250,000 jobs in the sector, which has grown at three times the rate of the UK’s overall economy.
Chowdhury then asked panelists Allan Niblo (Vertigo Films), William Sargent (Framestore), Martin Baker (Channel 4) and Noirin Carmody (Revolution Software) to raise what they believed to be the biggest challenges facing their companies.

UK broadcaster Channel 4 has acquired high profile Us superhero series Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. after a fierce bidding war.
The free-to-air channel beat a number of broadcasters, including Sky, to the series. Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., a spin-off from blockbuster Avengers Assemble, was the most notable show to come out of this year’s La Screenings. The show was shrouded in secrecy at the event in May, with buyers forced to sign non-disclosure agreements in advance of seeing the pilot.
It will premiere on C4 this autumn, soon after its launch on the ABC network in the Us, where it is set to debut on Sept 24.
Behind the production is Us producer, director and co-writer Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dollhouse and director of the Avengers Assemble.
This is the first major Us acquisition C4 has made since the departure of acquisitions boss Gill Hay earlier this year.
The deal is...

[1] Walt Disney Pictures released a teaser trailer for The Muppets attached to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The trailer wasn't released online until after opening weekend, because I'm told Disney execs believe the trailer plays better in large audiences on the big screen. And yes, watching it online, you miss the gasps and response that comes from the big reveal that it is a new Muppet movie. The trailer was even uploaded to YouTube under the faux title "Green With Envy" to help preserve the surprise. We could have posted it under that title, but none of you would've watched it. Its hard to judge the movie based on this teaser trailer alone, as the opening is edited together to feel like a generic romantic comedy. We see some wacky antics, fourth-wall breaking jokes, dancing and are left with the promise of a fun reunion from the puppet friends of our childhood.

[1] Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs held a special presentation to select groups of voyagers on board the maiden voyage of the Disney Dream, previewing some of Walt Disney Motion Pictures upcoming projects. One of the slides gives us a peek into what might be the logo for the upcoming The Muppets feature film. This also suggests that Disney is keeping The Muppets title and not converting to The Muppets Movie, something which was being internally discussed in the marketing department. The photo was published by the Disney news site Stitch Kingdom [2].
