Director and cinematographer Steven Soderbergh doesn’t care about the camera. He cares more about the story. And indeed, he shot another successful feature (Presence) on a prosumer camera (Sony a9 III).
Sony Alpha 9 III Soderbergh: Unconventional director and cinematographer
Director and cinematographer Steven Soderbergh loves to be the first to try new cameras even on high-end feature film productions. His early films were primarily filmed on Super 8 and 16 mm film formats. In the middle of his career, he was not afraid to utilize new cameras even in their production phase. For instance, Contagion (2011) which is one of the most-watched movies in the Covid era, was shot on the Red One Mx. Before that, Soderbergh filmed all of The Girlfriend Experience (2009) on a Red One camera, which has retailed for $4000 for that time. Furthermore, Soderbergh filmed the entirety of Unsane (2018) on an iPhone 7 Plus with its 4K digital camera using the app FiLMiC Pro.

“Eddie Murphy as ‘Chris Carver’ and Tracee Ellis Ross as ‘Carol Carver’ star in Candy Cane Lane Photo: Claudette Barius © Amazon Content Services LLC” In the 25+ years Tracee Ellis Ross has been working in Hollywood, she’s never professionally crossed paths with Eddie Murphy until now: The two of them are starring in the new holiday film Candy Cane Lane. Now that Ross has finally had the opportunity to work with Murphy, she told us it was everything she’d expected it would be, and then some. Candy Cane Lane is a light, pleasant little holiday treat, much like the candy its name suggests. The family comedy takes place on one of those streets nearly every town has, the one where neighbors out-do each other with the decorations, competing for the neighborhood honor of being named the annual winner. This story centers on one of those suburban families, headed by dad Chris Carver (Eddie Murphy). Chris Carver does indeed carve, in this case, handmade holiday decorations, which are overlooked for the prize every year. He is married to Carol (Tracee Ellis Ross), and they have three kids, Nicholas (Thaddeus J. Mixson), Joy (Genneya Walton), and Holly (Madison Thomas). Seeing a pattern here?
In case you missed, the film thoughtfully points that Christmas naming theme out for you in one scene.

Eddie Murphy as ‘Chris Carver’ stars in Candy Cane Lane Photo: Claudette Barius © Amazon Content Services LLC Though one of Eddie Murphy’s earliest films, Trading Places, famously had scenes that took place at Christmas time, it was definitely not a Christmas film. In fact, throughout Murphy’s 40-year film career, he had never made a true Christmas film … until now. Murphy is starring alongside Tracee Ellis Ross in Candy Cane Lane, a new Christmas-themed film that has his character vying to have the most festively decorated home in his neighborhood (and is willing to do anything to make that happen). Murphy spoke about why he finally decided to take the Xmas movie plunge. Steven Soderbergh, the Oscar-winning director behind Erin Brockovich, Traffic, and the Ocean’s trilogy, says artificial intelligence is a “serious issue.” But the availability of streaming data — or lack thereof — has him more concerned. “Data transparency is the one that keeps me up at night,” the director told Defector in a new interview. For example, Soderbergh said that he never saw data while working with Max, which released his films Let Them All Talk and Kimi, his reality competition Finding Magic Mike, and his new limited series Full Circle. “I was given adjectives,” he said. “‘We feel good about these numbers.’ ‘The comps are right in line with what we were hoping for.’” Claudette Barius/Warner Bros./Courtesy: Everett Collection The filmmaker has two theories about why streaming platforms withhold the numbers. “One is that they’re all making a lot more money than anybody knows and that they’re willing to tell us,...

Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) tells the tale of Harley Quinn’s break up with The Joker, and how she comes to work alongside four other female characters to take down a common enemy, The Black Mask.
As a long-time fan of DC Comics, I’d say that director Cathy Yan kept the characters pretty close to their comic roots; Harley has gone from villain to anti-hero, Huntress’ origin is spot on, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead has her portrayal nailed,...

Opening in theaters and IMAX nationwide on February 7, 2020 is the highly anticipated Birds Of Prey.
The first teaser was great, but this second big trailer is terrific – especially when Harley blows up Joker’s lair. Margot Robbie was the best thing about David Ayer’s Suicide Squad so to see Quinn in her true comic book form brings a smile to the face.
Check it out below and watch the newest girl gang cut loose!

Chicago – You know those amateur porns with no-name actors that use cheesy dialogue in between the sex scenes those viewers simply want? You never expect a real story or actually developed characters because it’s a collection of sex scenes. It’s not a real, you know, movie.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
“Magic Mike Xxl” is a soft porn with professional, “A”-list actors, but the film’s script takes the same substanceless qualities of its amateur porn brethren. Unlike soft porns, the sequel’s cinematography is Hollywood caliber and its actors know how to act, but its script is just as insulting. And the film’s purpose for being is the same: just to show you their dancing naughty bits with cheap words in between.
Though I’m not the demographic for “Magic Mike Xxl,” I can recognize the value of pure shut-your-brain-off entertainment. Sometimes that comes in the form of a...

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on seven over-the-hill, out-of-shape museum directors, artists, architects, curators, and art historians who went to the front lines of WWII to rescue the world’s artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their rightful owners.
With the art hidden behind enemy lines, how could these guys hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.
See The Monuments Men in theaters this Friday, but watch the new TV Spot that will air on Sunday during the Big Game.

In anticipation of the nationwide release of The Monuments Men, the new film from director George Clooney based on the true story of the race to save 1000 years of culture, moviegoers can visit SupportTheMonumentsMen.com, where they will find resources and information about the ways we all can continue the search for landmark works that were stolen or taken as souvenirs during World War II and are still missing today.
The film, which is written by George Clooney & Grant Heslov, will be released on February 7, 2014.
Robert M. Edsel, who founded and heads the Monuments Men Foundation, added, “The Monuments Men and women saved almost five million cultural objects, but so much is still missing. They could be anywhere, in your grandfather’s attic, or hiding in plain sight. I’m thrilled that with the release of the movie, there will be a way for the public to help complete these heroes’ mission.

At long last, this Friday sees the American release of The World’s End, my last must-see film of the summer. And with the end of August less than two weeks away, it’s high time we start looking ahead to the movies coming our way in the fall and winter. In that spirit, this week’s Trailer Trashin’ column looks at what could be one of the big films of the Christmas season, George Clooney’s World War II drama The Monuments Men.
Premise: In a race against time, a crew of art historians and museum curators unite to recover renowned works of art stolen by the Nazis before Hitler’s forces destroy them.
My take: If you added up the running times of all the films that have been made about World War II, I think it would end up being longer than the amount of the actual war lasted.

Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick has rightly been praised for her work on Behind the Candelabra. Her intricate research and attention to detail helped create a believable world for Liberace (Michael Douglas) and his lover Scott Thorson (Matt Damon), both on stage and off. Here, exclusively for Clothes on Film, she describes five of her recreated stage ensembles alongside official illustrations (some with with fabric swatches) by Christian Cordella. Was Liberace really that great of a piano man?
Claudette Barius/HBO
In Behind the Candelabra, the first time we encounter Michael Douglas’ Liberace is, naturally, on stage, treating his Vegas audience to a little bit of the boogie-woogie. He deftly carries the jaunty rhythmic bass line in his left hand while adding the melodic riff in his right between bouts of patter with the audience. And if you didn’t think talking and playing (and grinning) at the same time was impressive enough, how about that little “experiment,” as Liberace puts it, where he effortlessly plays the tune double-time—you know, 16 beats to the bar instead of 8?
Soderbergh’s Liberace clearly knows his way around the keyboard, but what about the actual man? He’s remembered primarily as the paragon of kitschy taste, but was Liberace actually a good pianist?
It depends on what you mean by “good.

Alex Rodriguez (l) and Alex Pettyfer (r) prepare to give us what we want in Magic Mike.
(photo: WB/Glen Wilson)
Every actor more than likely has a bucket list of roles they’d like to play in their career. For Adam Rodriguez he can cross off music video hottie (Jennifer Lopez’s If You Had My Love video), TV crime scene investigator (CSI: Miami, which just ended it’s ten-year run on CBS), Tyler Perry movie (I Can Do Bad All By Myself) and comedy (Ugly Betty). But did the sexy New York native ever think male stripper would be on that list?

Channing Tatum stripper movie: Magic Mike Channing Tatum shirt off — but not pants off — is the star of the Magic Mike trailer. (Please scroll down.) Steven Soderbergh, 49, who has directed everyone from veteran Oscar winner Alec Guinness (Kafka) to porn superstar Sasha Grey (The Girl Experience), handles the sexy (well, one hopes) proceedings in Magic Mike, which co-stars Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, and Matthew McConaughey. Now, the Magic Mike trailer doesn’t make stripping look at all arousing. In fact, I found it hard to understand why those women were screaming like mad hens at the mere site of well-toned guys dancing to the tune of "It’s Raining Men." But then again, perhaps Magic Mike is about the artificiality of it all: the faux sensuality of strippers and the just as faux enthusiasm of their audiences. Written by Reid Carolin, Magic Mike follows a successful stripper (Channing Tatum...

The concept for the film was born after director Steven Soderbergh saw footage of Mma fighter Gina Carano in the cage, which inspired the Oscar winner to build a film around her. "Haywire" revolves around a black-ops supersoldier (Carano) who seeks the ultimate revenge after she is betrayed by her colleagues, played by the very capable Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas.

Marion Cotillard, Contagion The Lion King 3D to Gross $35 Million?: Box Office Last weekend's top movie, Steven Soderbergh's disease & hysteria drama Contagion, was down to no. 2 on Friday, Sept. 16, taking in an estimated $4.63 million as per Box Office Mojo. Despite all the buzz and an 86% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics, Cannes Film Festival Best Director winner Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive opened in third place with $4.02 million. The good news for Drive, which stars Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan, is that some had been expecting it to open with $10 million, whereas current estimates predict a $12m-$13m debut weekend. Contagion stars Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, and Laurence Fishburne. In addition to Gosling and Mulligan, Drive features Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, and veteran Russ Tamblyn. Two other new entries underperformed on Friday: Straw Dogs with $1.98m at no.

The episode picks up with the police swarming around at the producer’s suicide scene. TMZ is there, too. Vince is back in the spotlights, for all the wrong reasons. He and the guys worry that he will be forced to take a urine test to see if he has been taking any drugs.
Meanwhile, Ari and Dana Gordon are enjoying their time together. They giddily discuss the terms of a wager.

“Entourage’s” first two episodes of the new season were perfectly fine — but the diehard fans want to see the show take off and make the sparks fly, like in the good old days. They got a reality check in this episode. The gys are growing up. The good times are a distant memory now. The show is bigger on developing plots than having the stars cracking jokes, as in seasons past.

The action begins when Vince presents his beloved screenplay outline to the guys. Drama loves Vince’s idea of Billy Walsh handling his project, his baby. “He knows my voice like Scorsese knows DeNiro’s.”
Sloan screams the classic two-word epithet at Eric, who has yet to move his stuff out of her place, over the phone. She has misunderstood a message from Eric.
When Lloyd spots Ari’s estranged wife at a “restaurant she hates,” Ari flips out.

Chicago – I remember when “Entourage” first took off back in 2004 wondering how Doug Ellin and his talented cast could possibly keep this concept fresh for the length of a series. Wouldn’t we get tired of watching Vinnie Chase (Adrian Grenier) try to make it big? Or worse, would these guys turn into the preening celebrities that the show at least somewhat skewered at the start? Could they keep it fresh? Even the most diehard fans of the HBO hit would admit they’ve struggled to do so but things were looking up regarding a solid final arc after last season, one that actually injected a bit of edge into the program by allowing Vince to deal with addiction. The show still wasn’t up to the standard of the first 3-4 seasons but it wasn’t as bad as season six.
