I love it when I come across *antics* like this, so that I can share with you folks! Thanks to our friends at Afrofuturist Affair, here's a look at a 1992 documentary titled simply Black Sci-Fi, which was directed by a Terrence Francis, for the BBC in the UK. Included in the film, which focuses on black science fiction in literature, film and television, are interviews with black sci-fi notables like authors Octavia Butler, Samuel R. Delaney, and Steven Barnes, as well as actress Nichelle Nichols, and others. This is my intro to the documentary; further research revealed nothing, but I haven't stopped digging yet. Maybe in sharing it here, someone out there will be able to enlighten...

African American science fiction, fantasy, and horror—all of which fall under speculative fiction—has been developing for over a century now. Its tradition has its roots throughout the African Diaspora, but for Americans the voyage into a fantastical world has held a special appeal. Rising out of a need to escape from the lasting essence of slavery, the emergence of Jim Crow, and second class citizenry, utopian fiction provided hope for a better future.
Over the years the genre has expanded, maintaining social consciousness but also expanding beyond the conventions of our reality. The products of this ever-expanding universe, a hidden universe, have been documented in M. Asli Dukan’s Invisible Universe: A History of Blackness in Speculative Fiction. As we’ve talked about in prior posts (here and here), the filmmaker is still in the process of finishing this important film, but we wanted to have a chat...

A 16-year-old named Kimberly Simon was raped and murdered in Oneida County, N.Y., in 1985. Steven Barnes of nearby Marcy, who was 19 at the time, was convicted of the crime in 1989. But it was never an open-and-shut case, and it's definitely an open one now: Barnes was released from prison in 2008 after DNA testing proved that he couldn't have done it, and cops haven't charged anyone else yet, but they think the killer(s) might have been involved in a satanic cult. Host John Walsh gives an update on their new hunt tonight. — Paul Droesch
Read on for previews of The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, Kid in a Candy Store, Growing the Big One, Pit Boss, 24/7 Pacquiao/Margarito and Brave New Voices 2010.

Jamie Lynn Spears's hometown of Kentwood, La., was buzzing with the news she gave birth, with friends and relatives expressing surprise, relief and confidence the 17-year-old will be a good mother. "She's awfully young to be a momma," says distant cousin Margie Busby. "But that's what they make [grandmothers] for. They have to help. That's the way it is with our circle of friends." Second cousin Janet Bridges acknowledges, "I didn't even know she had the baby," but gives a thumbs up to the baby girl's name. "Ooh, I like 'Maddie,'" says Bridges.
