Forget the DeLorean time machine from "Back to the Future" and the Aston Martins from the James Bond films. The real on-screen car Mvp is the original Batmobile from the 1960s "Batman" TV series. It's one of the most iconic rides in entertainment history, with its giant fins, Bat motif, and curved windshield.
The Batmobile first appeared in the comics in 1939's "Detective Comics" #27 and made the jump to live action in the 1943 serial film "Batman," and 1949 serial "Batman and Robin." For the TV series, George Barris designed the car from a one-off 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car, with some input from Eddie Graves from 20th Century Fox. It was an integral part of the series, which ran for 120 episodes over three seasons from 1966 to 1968.
The "Batman" series starred Adam West as Bruce Wayne/Batman, and Burt Ward as Dick Grayson/Robin and the two were often shown leaving through the hidden entrance of the Batcave.

Sneak Peek new leaked images of the 'Batmobile' from the set of writer/director Matt Reeves' "The Batman" standalone feature, reportedly a 'noir' take of DC Comics' "Batman: The Long Halloween", targeting a June 25, 2021 release:
Cast of the new film also includes Jeffrey Wright, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Jayme Lawson, John Turturro and Peter Sarsgaard.
"It's very much a point of view-driven, 'noir Batman' tale," said Reeves. "It's told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it's going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional.
"It's more Batman in his detective mode than we've seen in the films.
"The comics have a history of that. He's supposed to be the world's greatest detective...
"...and that's not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been.
"I'd love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking...

Hugh Hefner has been laid to rest next to iconic sex symbol Marilyn Monroe, but the real question is: why? Did the two have a steamy romance that no one knew about? Were they friends? Or did Hugh just have a thing for blondes (which we all know to be true)? Well, it's a little more complicated than you'd expect, but the short answer is that Hugh loved Marilyn - even if they never met! Hugh purchased the crypt next to Marilyn's burial site in Westwood Village Memorial Park back in 1992 for $72,000. It was because of his love for the movie star and her influence on his career, not because they were ever romantically involved . . . or even friends, for that matter. "I'm a believer in things symbolic," Hugh told the magazine back in 2009. "Spending eternity next to Marilyn is too sweet to pass up." RelatedHugh Hefner's Playmate Love Interests In...

For a few hours on Thursday, Los Angeles stood in for Gotham City as thousands of Bat-fans lined the streets to pay tribute to the late Batman actor Adam West as the famed Batsignal was projected upon L.A.’s City Hall tower.
Burt Ward, who co-starred as the Caped Crusader’s teen sidekick Robin alongside West on on the phenomenally popular and slyly campy 1960s TV series, was on hand to celebrate the life of his longtime friend along with West’s wife Marcelle, his children and other members of his family.
West passed away June 9 at age 88 following a brief battle with leukemia.

I’ve got a cool infographic here for you to check out that offers some interesting details on all of the Batmobiles that have been used in the movies over the years. It tells us the speed of each one, what they are worth, and other specs and features that they have.
For example, did you know that the fastest Batmobile ever built was the one used in Batman and Robin? It has a top speed of 350 mph. The infographic comes to us from NetQuote, and they offered up the following details that came along with the infographic. I’ve also included other infographics focusing on other iconic vehicles that we’ve seen in the movies.
Contrary to popular belief, the circa-1966 original Batmobile was not the first of its kind, but it is undoubtedly the most important, according to Aaron Miller at Thrillist.com. “Hollywood legend George Barris was...

"Oh great brothers of the night who rideth upon the hot winds of hell, who dwelleth in the Devil's lair; move and appear." These words are heard quoted from The Satanic Bible by none other than creative consultant and Church of Satan leader Anton Lavey to set the mood for the 1977 supernatural road thriller The Car.
Director Elliot Silverstein never reaches the suspense or perspicacious intensity that Spielberg mastered in Duel and doesn't deliver the excessive thrills and excitement of Roger Corman's Death Race 2000, but The Car some how manages to offer enough impressive stunts, eccentric characters and stylish atmosphere to succeed as a moderately entertaining 98 minutes of vehicular mayhem.
In The Car, James Brolin mustered enough charisma to channel a poor man's Roy Scheider as Chief Deputy Wade Parent—leading the crusade against the demonic death machine with the assistance of his deputy Luke Johnson, played by Ronny Cox.

George Barris, the creator of the amazing 1966 Batmobile and many other legendary whips ... has died. Barris' most famous car was surely the one Adam West drove during the "Batman" TV show. But he has a rich automotive history ... he designed the 'Munsters' Koach, the truck for "The Beverly Hillbillies" and the modified Dodge Charger for "Thunder Alley." The Batmobile sold at auction in 2013 for $4.62 million. Barris died early Thursday. We're told he'd been battling a brain tumor.

In the wake of the massive hit that was Jaws (1975), studios were foaming at the mouth to replicate its success. Of course, their idea was to take everything that they thought made Jaws a winner and put it in a different setting. Here’s a few that were cranked out by the dream machine: Jaws on Land (Grizzly), Micro-Jaws (Piranha), Jaws, Back to the Water (Orca), Jaws, Back to the Water Again, with Feeling (Jaws II) , and our flick du jour, the little engine that could, Jaws on Wheels – The Car (1977) .
In actuality, Steven Spielberg made Jaws on Wheels before he made Jaws, with the relentless cat and mousecapades of Duel (1971). However, this was 1977 and it was time for an upgrade. Released by Universal in May, The Car was (naturally) laughed off the screen by the critics, and why wouldn’t it be? A demonic vehicle terrorizing a...

Opening Batman: The Complete Series, I said, “This is my childhood in a box.” When the ABC series debuted in January 1966, I was seven, the exact perfect age to be utterly captivated by seeing a comic book faithfully adapted to the small screen. Without fail, I was glued to the television set on Wednesday and Thursday evenings right until the final episode aired in March 1968, leaving indelible images in my mind. These were reinforced just a few years later when local syndicated reruns burned the stories, sounds, and characters deeper into my psyche.
I was too young to understand the context of the show and its impact on popular culture, DC Comics, or the world of licensing. I didn’t get the wry jokes, it’s knowing pop camp approach to storytelling, or how it cleverly worked on multiple levels (a rare occurrence on prime time back then). Instead,...

Photographer and film-maker who took some of the last shots of Marilyn Monroe
In the summer of 1962 Bert Stern, who has died aged 83, took more than 2,500 photographs of Marilyn Monroe over three sessions held in a Los Angeles hotel. The images captured Monroe in a sometimes pensive but mostly playful mood as she posed nude, variously covered by bedsheets, a chinchilla coat, a stripy Vera Neumann scarf and a pair of chiffon roses. Despite their air of carefree humour, the portraits are inescapably wistful because – along with George Barris's subsequent pictures of Monroe at Santa Monica beach – they are among the last photographs taken of the star. She was found dead at her home several weeks later.
The shoot was for Vogue, which had Stern on a contract that required him to fill 100 fashion pages a year and afforded him an additional 10 pages for personal projects. Stern proposed Monroe as a subject,...

The car's owner – auto customizer George Barris, of Los Angeles – transformed a one-of-a-kind 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car into the sleek crime-fighting machine. It boasted lasers and a "Batphone" and could lay down smoke screens and oil slicks.
The iconic car was used by Adam West who starred as the Caped Crusader and by Burt Ward, his sidekick Robin known for exclamations beginning with _"Holy."
Barris' publicist says his client is pleased with the auction result.

The original 1960s Batmobile has sold for $$4.2 million (£2.6 million). The crimefighting vehicle from the Adam West-starring Batman show has been bought at auction by car collector Rick Champagne. The first of six cars that featured on the show was sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction house in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Batmobile, a souped-up 1955 Lincoln Futura used in the 1966 series, now has a new owner for the first time in decades. And it most likely does not come with a bumper-to-bumper warranty. Rick Champagne, who owns Champagne Logistics in Tempe, Ariz., paid $4.6 million for the car that has had only one previous owner -- customizer George Barris, who originally created the Batmobile for the television series. Buying television and movie cars can be problematic, because many times multiple cars are used for a single production. That means finding the primary car used in a series or movie can be difficult, if not impossible. Not to mention that multiple cars being in existence can dilute the value of one car purchased. But that wasn't the case for the Batmobile. Only one Futura was ...

The original Batmobile used in the 1966-68 Batman TV series sold tonight at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction for $4.6 million including fees. Bidding lasted about 4 minutes and the winning bid was $4.2 million before fees were assessed. The car’s customizer-owner George Barris had put the car up for bids last month. Barris bought the 1955 Lincoln Futura Concept car for $1 from the Ford Motor Co. and was given $15,000 and 15 days to gadgetize the handmade 19-foot two-seater. Some observers had predicted the car would sell for as much as $5 million. And even though $4.6 million is a lot, Barrett-Jackson’s Twitter feed said a Shelby Cobra that once sold for $5.5 million holds the record. (Photo by Barrett-Jackson)...

Later this month, the original Batmobile will be up for auction. The car, designed and built by George Barris for the 1960s ABC series Batman, is expected to fetch millions of dollars. The Batmobile is not only famous and worth a lot, but also on the verge of revving up some legal noise. At the same time that the original automobile gets auctioned off, Warner Bros. is pushing a challenging lawsuit against a California resident named Mark Towle, who operates Gotham Garage, which specializes in customizing replicas of automobiles featured in various films and TV shows. Holy bubble-top! The car used in the 1966-68 Batman TV series will be auctioned off in January. Customizer George Barris bought the 1955 Lincoln Futura Concept car for $1 from the Ford Motor Co. Barris was given $15,000 and 15 days to gadgetize the handmade two-seater. He added a nose-mounted aluminum Cable Cutter Blade, Batphone, Bat Ray Projector, Automatic Tire Inflator and other fluorishes such as twin parachutes used to execute 180-degree turns. Barris still owns the one-of-a-kind car that came with a push-button transmission. It’s expected to fetch seven figures when the gavel comes down at the auction January 19th in Scottsdale, Ariz. Clark Gable’s personal 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300Sl Gullwing Coupe will also be sold that day. Notable showbiz cars typically go for large sums. The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 used in the James Bond films “Goldfinger” and “Thunderball” sold for $4.6 million at auction in 2010.

Late last month Warner Bros. released what is arguably their best DC animated adventure in The Dark Knight Returns Part 1, and adaptation of Frank Miller's classic story of the same name. Fans are now eager to see what's in store for them in the consclusion. WB announced today that the first footage from the upcoming release will debut at New York Comic Con, and attached the first still from the film in case you can't wait that long.
Seriously, if you haven't taken the time to watch Tdkr: Part 1, go out and buy it now. I doubt you'll be disappointed with the purchase. It's well worth your time, and in my opinion the best WB has put out in their animated features. Anyway, below is the first image from the upcoming Part 2 (it's not incredibly impressive, but it's got me excited), and the full press release. The release also...

Last year, we brought you a very cool infographic that covered the history of the Batmobile, from early comic book versions, to George Barris’ iconic 1955 Lincoln Futura from the Adam West TV series of the late 60s, to the infamous Tumbler that debuted in director Christopher Nolan‘s Batman Begins.
Now, we have a portion of a documentary called The Batmobile that focuses solely on the big black bat’s wheels throughout history, and features interviews with the creators of some of the famous rides, film directors Christopher Nolan, Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher and others.
Check it out below!

The full documentary will appear on the Blu-ray of The Dark Knight Rises when it hits stores later in the year. We will keep you updated on the Blu-ray, and you can click the Amazon link below to sign up to be notified when it’s ready for pre-order...

This is Andy Smith's favorite part, when he slips in through the top of the Tumbler -- the Batmobile used in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy -- and fires up the engine. The Tumbler lets out a roar, the floor shakes and the cockpit begins to smell like the inside of a lawnmower. A slight, confident smirk slips across his face that seems to say, Yeah, I am sitting in the driver's seat of a Batmobile. My job is awesome. “I have to say, I love this car, because we built it to do what it does,” said Smith, a special effects supervisor who worked on the Batmobiles in both Nolan's trilogy and Tim Burton's “Batman.” “[The Tumbler] can go over a jump, you can smash it into things, it's just a big chunky piece of engineering and I like that. It can [even] spin on all four tires and do donuts.

Just before heading into The Hilton Bayfront for the “Twilight” press conference, I spent a few minutes with six truly wicked rides. You’d think seeing the Tumbler and Bruce Wayne’s other whips merely parked on the grass rather than zipping around Gotham City would be a bit of a drag, but these things are just as incredible stagnant, in the flesh.
