Updated with details on Best Director winner Christina Yoon and other awards: The 19th HollyShorts Film Festival has handed out its awards, including the Grand Prix Best Short Award to We Were Meant To, an honor that comes with a $60,000 prize from Panavision.
Tari Wariebi directed We Were Meant To, set in a reality where “Black men have wings and their first flight is a rite of passage.” The film stars Tim Johnson Jr. The Grand Prix Award qualifies the short for Oscar consideration. In a HollyShorts Film Festival awards ceremony that took place at midnight the day before a tropical storm was scheduled to his Los Angeles, Tari Wariebi’s “We Were Meant To” won a $60,000 prize and with the win qualified for the Academy Award in the Best Live Action Short category.
The awards were originally scheduled to be handed out on Sunday evening at the TLC Chinese Theatre, but they were moved to the unusual Saturday midnight slot as Hurricane Hilary approached.

Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” fresh from its triumphant world premiere at the Cannes fest, opens the 38th Guadalajara Film Festival (Ficg) which touts new sections this year, including a branded series showcase and midnight screenings of Italian fright maestro Dario Argento’s horror films.

Aside from launching two programs for Mexican animation talent to attend either the world-class Gobelins School in Paris through an Animexico scholarship or any film school around the world with the Beca Jenkins-Del Toro scholarship, he brought his celebrated “Monsters” collection of paintings, drawings, maquettes and artifacts to his beloved city. Ficg in La Lineup Includes U.S. and L.A. Premieres of Some the Best Latin American Films of the Year
The Guadalajara International Film Festival in Los Angeles (Ficg in La) - presented by the University of Guadalajara Foundation in USA and Conaculta has announced its lineup. "Messi" directed by Álex de la Iglesia, will be the Opening Night film for the 2015 Festival. This documentary portrays today’s greatest soccer player who at age 11 ran the risk of seeing his career ending before it started. With informal interviews, re-enactments, and spectacular footage of Messi’s legendary exploits, this film tells the incredible, true story of his rise to glory.
The 2015 Ficg in La, which returns to the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood for its fifth year and runs from Thursday, August 27 to Sunday, August 30, brings the best of contemporary Mexican and Latin American cinema to Los Angeles, and is an extension of the Guadalajara International Film Festival.
Featuring outstanding and award-winning titles from FICG30, which ran from March 6-15, 2015 in Guadalajara, Ficg in La will offer the premiere of other titles that have emerged in the world of cinema throughout the year to great critical acclaim.
The aim of the festival is to increase access and visibility of Mexican and Latin American cinema in the U.S., facilitating the exchange of ideas through stories and issues of cultural and social relevance, create a space for collaboration between filmmakers, and strengthen relations between the film industry in Mexico and the U.S.
Ficg in La includes film screenings followed by Q&As with filmmakers and talent, as well as galas, panels and special award recognitions to Latin American and U.S. Latino artists.
“Ficg in La 2015 represents the culmination of five years of continuous dedication and passion to further the Latino arts and cinema in the U.S. What was once a tiny three-day showcase of Latino and Ibero-American cinema, is now a lively, eventful film festival, filled with industry events, work-in-progress competitions, family-oriented programs and panel discussions. Previous recipients include Demián Bichir (actor), Juan Carlos Arciniegas (CNN en Espanol), Fernando Luján (actor), Rubén Luengas (journalist), Gabriel Beristain (Director of Photography) and Emilio Kauderer (Music Composer).
Ficg in La continues to support Latino and Ibero-American films with Guadalajara Construye in Los Angeles 2 and DocuLab.2 Los Angeles by selecting six projects from filmmakers seeking post-production funds. The films will be screened for jury members, sponsors and film industry professionals. The winners will be announced on Friday August 28.
In addition, the winning projects in each competition will automatically qualify to be considered for Guadalajara Construye 10 or DocuLab.8 Guadalajara, or for the Ibero-American Competitions of the next edition of the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG31) – March 4 - 13, 2016.

Cannes Film Festival, Critics' WeekRodrigo Pla's "The Desert Within" ("Desierto Adentro") is a powerful fable about the obsessive pursuit of redemption and the toll it takes on all concerned. Following hard on the heels of his award-winning "La Zona", the movie places Pla in the front rank of Mexico's current cinematic resurgence and will play well in all Spanish-speaking territories, not to mention arthouse cinemas elsewhere.
The movie opens on a shot of a man carving a series of altar-pieces in a country church, then flashes back to 1926 for the first of four chapters -- each given a heading: sin, penance, the sign, and the pardon that never comes -- which spreads the action over two decades.
In the beginning is an action by the protagonist Elias Mario Zaragoza) during the peasant uprising of that year. This results in the destruction of the local San Isidro church and the death of innumerable townspeople, including his wife (in childbirth), one of his sons and the local priest.
Fearing divine retribution against his surviving children, including the newly-born Aureliano (named after the son who died), Elias devotes his life to restoring the old church to its former splendor. The story unfolds as seen from the point of view of Aureliano (Diego Catano) who provides occasional voice-over commentary and who we at last realize to be the altar-piece craftsman.
The movie has epic sweep, particularly the early scenes in which the issues of faith and conscience are presented with an intensity worthy of a Graham Greene. There are frequent religious references but without religiosity.
Pla uses a limited color palette with an emphasis on browns and olive greens, amid rain and mud in the opening chapter and parched desert at the close. At moments he also uses animated inserts, a device which might have been irritating but which, in context, appears fitting.
By the close Elias has become a tragic figure of Shakespearean proportions, and Pla ends this absorbing movie with the Nietzsche epigraph from which it draws its title: "The desert grows, and woe to him who conceals the desert within him..."
