Nestled at 7,800 feet above sea level in Estes Park, Colorado, The Stanley Hotel sits in the snowy mountains with an air of regality. This is where BruceFest, the definitive Bruce Campbell film festival, returned for its second year from Dec 1st-3rd. This time around, it featured the exciting addition of fellow horror icon Ted Raimi as co-host of honor.
Tickets were sold as three-day passes for access to events in various buildings on the hotel grounds for a blend of immersive Arg, screenings, trivia, tabletop games and prop exhibits. Attendees referred to the Eventzee app for schedule updates and participated in challenges that would award a special prize to the highest scorer. Anyone who has heard director Sam Raimi speak knows that shooting the 1981 low-budget horror movie "The Evil Dead" was a grueling experience. Raimi has gone on record repeatedly, describing the horrors of working in a remote cabin in freezing cold weather, trying to finish the movie in four weeks, but ultimately taking eight. Bill Warren's indispensable volume "The Evil Dead Companion" lays out every possible detail a Raimi aficionado might desire, and Raimi has described his process in multiple interviews.
"The Evil Dead," for the uninitiated, is a horror movie that took place in a remote cabin in the woods where a cadre of college students find a mysterious book bound in human flesh. The book was called the Necronomicon after an oblique spell book featured in the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. The kids play a tape recording of someone reading the Necronomicon, and it awakens an army of...

In 1997, the Chicago Underground Film Festival held its fourth annual edition on August 13-17 at the Theatre Building at 1225 W. Belmont Avenue. One way the festival promoted itself that year was it published a four-page pull-out section in the Chicago-based political magazine Lumpen, vol. 6 no. 4.
These pages included the entire festival schedule, which the Underground Film Journal has re-created below. In addition, scans of the original Lumpen pages appear at the bottom of this article. This program schedule did not include director names for the most part, but the Journal has included names that we could find through research.
In the Theatre Building, Cuff screened on two screens simultaneously. One theater screened films shot exclusively on film; while the other theater screened films shot exclusively on video. In addition, a Closing Night event of director John Waters‘ live performance piece “Shock Value” took place in the film theater and was simulcast into the video theater.

The Post-1960S, Pre-Digital Age: Real-time One-offs, 1975-1998
British filmmaker John Byrum is responsible for the first (and in some ways only) real-time period film. Inserts (1975), set in the early 1930s, is about a Boy Wonder movie director (called Boy Wonder, played by Richard Dreyfuss fresh from American Graffiti (1973) and Jaws (1975)) now washed up before the age of 30, resigned to making porn because of Hollywood’s conversion to sound. Not only is Inserts scrupulously real-time (with the exception of the opening credits sequence, which offers glimpses of the stag film we’re about to see made) and period, but it’s rather long for such a film, just shy of two hours. To tell the entire story would be spoiling the fun, but the Boy Wonder deals with recalcitrant actresses, the problem of his own potency, career problems, death, sex, after-death and after-sex…and in the end, as...

Evil Dead was Bruce Campbell's first film, so you may be asking, "what could have come before?"
In 1972, Bruce Campbell appeared in a short film directed by school chum Josh Becker. Becker would go on to work on all the Evil Dead movies with Campbell and Sam Raimi, as well as writing/directing movies like Lunatics: A Love Story and Stryker's War.
But at the age of 14, Bruce Campbell appeared in Becker's first short film, "Oedipus Rex." Based on the Greek tragedy, the short was shot on a lunch break at school (evident by the chalkboard title cards and the auditorium background). It is a silent film, and is pretty much what you would expect a 14-year-old to shoot during his lunch period.

Here's a great comedy short film starring Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell made way back in the day, called Blind Waiter, directed by Josh Becker. I thought it was great! It's got a lot of charm and humor. Campbell is in the title role, Scott Spiegel plays the cook, and Sam Raimi is the busboy. This short was shot shortly after the original Evil Dead in only one weekend and a couple of nights.
It's awesome to see how far these guys have come. If you didn't already know, Raimi and Campbell have been lifelong friends, and they've been making movies together since the early 70s. I love watching early films of some of my favorite filmmakers. Hope you like this one!

Born in the Big Apple in january of 1951, Sheldon Lettich moved with his family to the West Coast at a young age. After finishing High School, he joined the Marine Corps, serving his country for four years, one of them as a Radio Operator in Vietnam.
Partially based upon his experiences in Southeast Asia, he co-authored Tracers, a play seen in the Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago and London stages, to great acclaim; It subsequently won the prestigious Drama Desk and L.A. Drama Critics Awards.
The writing of screenplays seemed like a natural progression and his writing eventually began attracting the attention of many Hollywood producers.
Since then, Lettich has become known as expert in testosterone-driven action extravaganzas, many of the films starring some of the silver screen´s best-loved slugfest protagonists: Sylvester Stallone (Sheldon shared screenwriting credit with Sly in the third cinematic episode of the Rambo series,...

Written by: Josh Becker, Scott Spiegel, Sheldon Lettich, Bruce Campbell
Starring: Brian Shulz, Sam Raimi, Robert Rickman, John Manfredi, Tim Quill
The cracked fever dream of a movie titled Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except is best known for its impressive Evil Dead pedigree, featuring several key players from that classic indie film both in front of and behind the camera.
Spearheaded by Josh Becker (who worked on The Evil Dead ’s second unit) and Scott Spiegel (co-writer of Evil Dead 2), this “Marines vs. the Manson family” saga from 1985 has built a solid cult of its own over the years. Much like The Evil Dead, it began as a short film made to raise funds for a feature-length production. The shot-on-8mm Stryker’s War (also the alternate title for the feature) starred Bruce Campbell as Sergeant Stryker and included much of the same plot and dialogue.

Night Gallery: Season 3 DVD Available Now
The third and final season (1972–73) of Rod Serling’s underrated series finally comes to DVD. Season 3 (with episodes downsized to half an hour) is generally considered inferior to the first two years, but it still contains several classic episodes. Best of all, Jim Benson and Scott Skelton, co-authors of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery: An After-Hours Tour, helped put together a “lost” episode featuring four segments that were heavily altered for syndication. Guest stars this season include Mickey Rooney, Vincent Price, Burgess Meredith and gorgeous Joanna Pettet (The Evil).

It's another slow week for DVD and Blu-ray junkies as there are barely any new releases that are really worth talking about. The alien invasion flick The Darkest Hour is the only major title in stores and was mostly overshadowed by all the other blockbusters back in December (according to reviews, we didn't miss much). Elsewhere Meryl Streep won an Oscar for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in the otherwise mediocre The Iron Lady and Werner Herzog explores serial killers on death row in his latest documentary Into the Abyss. As for Blu-ray releases, we have the 60th Anniversary Edition of A Streetcar Named Desire, a newly restored edition of George Melies' A Trip to the Moon, and Josh Becker's cult classic Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except starring Sam Raimi. What will you be buying or renting this week? Check out the full list of releases after the jump.

Synapse Films' Intruder was one of the finest Blu-ray releases of 2011, and they've followed it up with another of the films from the Michigan Mafia, Josh Becker's Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except. Becker was in charge of the lighting on Sam Raimi's breakout feature, The Evil Dead. That small core crew of people went on to make a huge impression on the low budget feature world. The group includes such exploitation favorites as the Raimi Brothers (Sam, Ted, Ivan), Becker (Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except), Scott Spiegel (dir. Intruder, writer Evil Dead 2), Bruce Campbell (Bruce Fucking Campbell), and producer Rob Tapert. Together they've done everything from the Evil Dead series, to Zena: Warrior Princess, to Spider-Man, to Alien Apocalypse and beyond. Truly one...

The first casualty Fango witnesses upon arriving at the wooded location in Howell, Michigan is the nearly decapitated body sprawled atop the makeup table, and an actor getting zombified by makeup artist Patrick Halpin of Dead Pretzel FX. Here and there, other ghouls roam amidst the crew. They are setting up for a fight scene in which a zombie hunter battles an infected cop.
A few minutes later, we meet up with Brett Pierce, one-half of the brother writer/director team (pictured above; see more exclusive pics below) who are in the last week of lensing their “zombedy” Deadheads, who explains the genesis of their film. “We made a really low-budget zombie movie with some other filmmakers seven years ago called Dead/Undead,” he tells Fango. “It was sort of cheesy, with a monster and kids in a cabin, and my brother Drew said, ‘Let’s make a zombie buddy movie.
