Fox is finally letting loose American Idol, a show that, as far as I can tell anyway, has been gaining haters and losing viewers for years.
The news isn’t actually surprising, except insofar as it didn’t come last year, but the show isn’t quite dead yet. It will still air next year, apparently as a kind of farewell season.
Though the show was massive nearly a decade ago, the ratings have dropped every year for the last few years, and this year managed a series low point, which is kind of amazing.
Of course, the show had a lot of other ways to bring in money, but if the ratings drop far enough, those outlets don’t work as well either.
Frankly, this season was particularly depressing, as anyone who was interesting fell off quickly, and the judges seemed only interested in trying to convince viewers that...

Since its premiere at Sundance, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood has been garnering Oscar buzz and rave reviews. The film could score nominations for best picture, director, actor and more, but after submitting three songs to the Academy for consideration in the best original song category, the film could add another nomination. Two of the songs were written by Ethan Hawke, who could garner a best supporting actor nomination for his portrayal of the father. If Hawke receives a best original song nomination for one of his songs, he will join a short list of actors who have scored nominations for songs since 1994.
Both Annette O’Toole and her husband Michael McKean were nominated in 2004, for their song “A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow,” which appeared in 2003’s A Mighty Wind. Well known for her role on Smallville as Martha Kent, O’Toole didn...

Harry Connick Jr. American Idol‘s third judge. He will work alongside Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban.
This is really a tricky one. I’m a huge fan of Harry Connick Jr., but with American Idol‘s weird tailspin last season, is this good news?
One of the key destructive qualities last season, for me anyway, was the insufferable way the judges talked up the contestants week after week. With only rare breaks, the judges seemed determined to convince us people were good and that there was some level of talent on the show – which there wasn’t.
Maybe Harry will break that up a bit and the show can rebound. I’m not sure though. AI might be on the way out.
What do you think of the choice, and the show?

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.

Nabbing top-10 spot on Billboard chart, winner's first single lands second-largest digital-sales week ever for an 'Idol' contestant.

Despite ongoing health concerns, things just keep getting better on the professional front for "American Idol" season 11 winner Phillip Phillips. The singer's debut single, "Home," is making a splash on the Billboard charts, ringing up a series of history-making debuts for the Fox singing competition.
With 278,000 digital downloads, "Home" is the highest-debuting song on this week's Digital Songs chart, bowing at an impressive #2 behind Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe." That number is also large enough to give Phillips the second-best digital-sales week ever for an "Idol" contestant. Only the original "American Idol," Kelly Clarkson, can boast a bigger digital sales week: Her smash "My Life Would Suck Without You" debuted with 280,000 downloads in January 2009.

The moment we have all been waiting for has arrived. After over 132 million votes, 21 year old Phil Phillips from Leesburg, Ga has been crowned the winner of American Idol Season 11. What a glorious moment this was. The finale was jam packed with surprise performances, a two hour celebration concert leading up to the big moment, the win that many may have wanted but not anticipated actually happening. That’s what makes this win so fantastic! The underdog took it home! The one contestant who made no apologies or excuses for being true to himself all season long took the win. Congratulations Phil Phillips! A win well deserved!
A Top 12 reunion was our first treat of the night as our favorites (minus the two finalists) opened with “Runaway Baby” by Bruno Mars. This was one of the most unforgettable group performances for a few reasons. First, this was a wonderful song...

Part one of the American Idol Season 11 finale has come. While not the most thrilling showdown we have ever seen, Jessica Sanchez and Phil Phillips made their final pleas for votes to be this year’s American Idol with three numbers. Based on this week alone, Phil Phillips may have swayed Jessica Sanchez fans to throw him a few votes. He was fantastic! But what makes this finale so worth anticipating is knowing that whoever wins, both of these two are worthy of the win and either finalist would be a very satisfying win. So while the performances of the finale so far have not been wildly impressive, these two stand outs earned their spots in the final two and tonight’s conclusion to the finale is going to be one for the books! Really, when was the last time you found yourself rooting for both finalists?

From his no-nonsense stage attire to his humble attitude and meat-and-potatoes taste in music, "American Idol" finalist Phillip Phillips isn't that different from many of you.
And, like you, the guy doesn't always feel like showing up to work when he's feeling sick. But when attendance means a shot at a major-label recording contract and potential stardom, you suck it up and punch the clock even when you aren't feeling it. With just one more performance before Wednesday night's coronation show, Phillips, 21, who has struggled with a painful case of kidney stones the entire season, is happy that the end is near.
"Yeah, I've been sick the whole show," said Phillips in a press conference on Monday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Seated next to his rival, 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez,...

Unlike in previous years, when I called David Cook "a sociopolitical barometer with an awesome comb-over" and compared Adam Lambert to Barack Obama, I've avoided making sweeping generalizations about the 11th season of "American Idol," mostly because, at this point, there's not much about the show that inspires me to do anything (except complain, of course).
Worn down by the past four seasons — the revolving cast of judges, that time Casey Abrams did Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and, of course, the lilywhite list of champions (Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze and Scotty McCreery) — I've come to view "Idol" for what it really is: a massively bloated, increasingly out-of-touch behemoth,...

The "American Idol" finale is set, and Joshua Ledet didn't get an invite.
Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez will compete in next week's season finale after Ledet was voted off the show Thursday (May 17). Ledet, the 20-year-old from Westlake, Louisiana, who was continually praised as one of the best contestants to ever grace the "Idol" stage, received the lowest number of votes from the 90 million votes cast, according to "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest.
Ledet set a record for standing ovations from the judges this season on "Idol"; barely a week went by when he didn't get the judges on their feet after one of his stellar performances. Ledet performed James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" at the close of the show Thursday, repeating a...

Phillips' performance at the close of Wednesday's (May 16) episode stole the show and earned a standing ovation from the judges. All night, Randy Jackson spoke of having big "moments," and Phillips' gentle take on the Bob Seger classic definitely qualified as one of those performances.

With nearly 70 million votes cast this week, one young hopeful met the end of their Idol journey last night as the final four became the final three. Before the results were read, sticking with the theme of the week, the final four opened the show with a performance of “California Dreamin’.” While the vocals were good, the choreography was cheesy and the finalists made no point in pretending that it was anything but. Their movements were stiff and their exhaustion was read all over their face. Hang on final three, the competition is almost over!
Prior to the results being read, this week’s Ford music video, set to Jennifer Lopez’s “Feeling So Good” had a behind the scenes feature with director, Ethan Lader and the finalists on location in Downton La. The behind the scenes footage was longer than the music video itself. It’s a shame because...

With the theme of “California Dreamin’” the final four of American Idol Season 11 set out for a two hour blow out of incredible performance of incredible performance leading up to one of them being blown away tonight. The "American Idol" frontrunner soared higher than ever while Hollie Cavanagh may have sealed her fate on Wednesday's (May 9) performance episode, which saw the contestants battling for the hometown visits that await the top three finalists.
The evening saw the final four taking on two songs apiece — one with ties to the state of California and one song the contestants wished they'd written themselves. (The categories were some of the loosest in "Idol" history, but hey, they can't all be winners.)

For the most part, the themes on this season's "American Idol" have been pretty straightforward: Queen, Whitney Houston, Personal Idols, Songs From the Year You Were Born, Songs From the 1980s, More Songs About Buildings and Food (look it up).
But when the final four take the stage Wednesday night (May 9), they'll be tasked with performing two songs in one of the most ambiguous, wide-open themes in the show's history: California Dreamin' (songs by Californians) and Songs I Wish I'd Written.

The final five took on the sixties this week and the contestant who it may have favored the most this week was sent packing. What an unfortunate elimination this was, as this young vocalist may have been seen as a front runner next to Sanchez. Though with so much country dominating the winners’ pool on this show, this year the viewers decided to make a change. Was it the right one? At this point, if Jessica Sanchez does not win… this answer could definitely be up for debate.

The final five has been chosen for American Idol Season 11. Three females and two males remain, but who is going to take the title? This week’s elimination was the most obvious choice, due to the way things have played out each week over the past few weeks. This elimination does not make the inevitable any less disappointing, but America has spoken time and time again.. and finally they spoke loud enough.

The top six opened this week’s American Idol in a very special way. Joined by Brian May and Roger Taylor, original members of the legendary rock group Queen, viewers were treated to a Queen medley to open the show that was all about Queen in its first hour. Whether you know the songs that were featured or not, the night brought a great night of music and tough competition when it came down to voting.
16 year old Jessica Sanchez began the night with great vocals but a not so great performance. This week brought one of the best episodes of the season as the top seven aced the challenge of delivering us fantastic performances with songs from the 2000s and on as well as soul songs. Almost everyone impressed and one contestant in particular had her shining moment… which should guarantee her safety if all is fair in the world. This week on American Idol, the top seven contestants took on songs from 2010 and on…finally songs from the present day across the board. Akon joined Jimmy Iovine to mentor the finalists who all delivered excellent vocals though some still lacked something in their performance. Because of this lack, this live performance show as a whole was not as enthralling as others. Sanchez and two others may have made up for this but it is getting down to the wire and the contestants can’t save all of the bells and whistles for finale night. They won’t get there without it as it’s not just about the vocals. With the usual standouts that there were this week, we can all easily guess who’s going home tonight… or can we?

A lot of famous actors write autobiographies, but not many have those same autobiographies turned into movies. Of course, if those actors had lived their lives like Pam Grier, perhaps Imprint Entertainment would have tried to make a biopic out of their lives instead. Announced yesterday, Imprint, one of the production companies behind "Percy Jackson and the lightning Thief" and "Twilight," have optioned the film rights to Grier's 2010 autobiography, "Foxy, My Life in Three Acts."
Considering the actress is only in her early 60s, it would seem Grier's 'Three Acts' is still ongoing, or perhaps she is looking to eventually add a fourth act. Either way, the first act of Grier's acting career is undoubtedly the 1970s, where Grier quickly became the Queen of Blaxploitation films and perhaps the first female action star after the success of 1973's "Coffy" and 1974's "Foxy Brown" and dated the likes of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,...

American Idol got off to a dry start last night and didn’t quite pick up the pace, with safe number after safe number, even with Gwen Stefani and No Doubt bassist, Tony Kanal joining Jimmy Iovine to mentor the remaining contestants for eighties week. The duets were more entertaining and engaging than the performances that actually counted for something, making voting decisions awfully difficult this week. One contestant did have her shining moment this week… and it wasn’t Jessica Sanchez. After warming up a seat in the bottom three, she definitely won’t be there this week. Aside from this killer performance, it’s anybody’s guess who will be going home this week.
The only remaining wild card in the competition, DeAndre Brackensick performed “I Like It” by Debarge and gave a good performance but by no means was it one of his best performances as host,...

American Idol reeled in fans of The Hunger Games last night, when host Ryan Seacrest began the night by telling the top nine, “May the odds be ever in your favor.” He continued on to talk about how hungry these contestants were to be the next American Idol and the clever dialogue was just the beginning of tricks for the night. Group performances and a duet with Stevie Nicks helped fill in some time during this two hour broadcast… and it actually worked. The theme this week also enabled the contestants to sing songs from their own idols, which brought some of the most exciting song choices of the season so far as it really helped us see these contestant’s musical aspirations clearer than ever. This was definitely one of the better weeks for the all of the contestants. There were three or four boring performances but those contestants...

This week on American Idol, Jimmy Iovine was joined by Diddy to mentor the contestants during the Billy Joel themed week. Odd pairing for a Billy Joel week. Based on the first few performances, it didn’t seem like what went on during rehearsals made much of a mind blowing impact. Far too often since the live shows began have the contestants been boring and safe and it didn’t stop this week. But there was little room for risk taking when many of the contestants weren’t first able to connect to the song and make us believe the words they were singing.
Judge, Randy Jackson said it best about wild card, DeAndre Brackensick’s “Only the Good Die Young” performance when he said, “I wasn’t jumping up and down because you didn’t show me anything special.” Regardless of the fact that Brackensick had to open the show,...

In a first of the season, this week’s results show of American Idol was actually very captivating. From the top 11′s Ford commercial and special musical guests right down to the elimination… everything about the results show was entertaining and more than reassuring. A few weeks into the live shows have gone by and America has made it clear which contestants they are behind. While we can never predict when the jaw dropping moment will actually happen, that moment when we’re all blind sighted and the Pia Toscano of the season will get the boot… so far, all is well. No complaints here. Our top ten has been chosen. Looking back on all of the hopefuls who have been eliminated so far this season, the judges and America really did a wonderful job choosing the finalists. Who else is looking for to the summer tour?

The first solo elimination of the season took place this week, bringing the top thirteen down down a dozen. But first, the top thirteen gave a stellar performance of yet another Stevie Wonder hit before getting to the results. Skylar Laine didn’t seem all that comfortable with this number so thankfully this performance didn’t count for anything. The guys on the other hand looked like their own little boy band with that teeny bopper pop choreography they had going… and tonight one of those dancing boys was sent home.
As usual, before getting to the results, performances and a Ford commercial came first. Viewers were surprised to find that the first Ford commercial of the live shows was actually very impressive! This week brought a very special night for American Idol as the series celebrated its 400th episode! Enjoy it Idol because it doesn’t look like you’ll get to 500 with ratings the way that they are. Mentored by Mary J. Blige this week, the top guys took on Stevie Wonder while the top ladies paid tribute to Whitney Houston. Blige is no stranger to the show and always provides wonderful criticism and advice, so this was a perfect jumping off point for the mentors this season. Hopefully we haven’t seen the last of her this season and she can be a guest judge again as well. As for the rising talent, overall this week started off on a mediocre note but perhaps tonight will be the night that blows us away.

After 33 million plus votes were cast this week, the first live two hour results show of the season came upon us and half of the contestants met their end of the American Idol journey. Results were satisfactory for the most part. But that doesn’t mean the results weren’t a bit shocking. While Hollywood Week is the toughest part of the competition for the contestants, the first live results show is the toughest par of the competition for the viewers.
Producer, Jimmy Iovine made his first (pre-recorded) appearance of the season with his criticisms before each elimination. Wednesday night was the girls night to shine on American Idol as their first live performances of the season took place. A half hour into the two hour broadcast, judge, Randy Jackson admitted that the judges gave “some passes in judgement” when the boys performed on Tuesday night. So the judges got their act together and took their roles as judges just a bit more seriously this time around. The night started off just as strong as boys’ night but it wasn’t until Hallie Day made her way to the stage that this became a broadcast worth watching. If Day doesn’t make it to the top 13, we mine as well turn the voting over to Vote for the Worst. But let’s get to those before Day for a moment…
Country music jump started the night as Chelsea Sorrell graced the stage with her best Carrie Underwood performance.

The first live show of American Idol Season 11 kicked off last night with a mediocre start and nothing but praises from the judges. If this is any indication as to how this season is going be from hereon out, we are on for one very boring ride. It’s no wonder the ratings continue to slip. Last night was a sad reminder that there’s no one like Simon Cowell on the judging panel anymore. Lopez is a proud mother to them all and Tyler loves moving his body and bobbing to each and every performance while Jackson was at a time the only judge we could really rely on for hard criticism. But Jackson rarely gave any last night, giving little to no space for these contestants to grow for next week’s performances. What a talented bunch of boys we have this year but next week’s song...

The top 24 is complete and there’s actually talent across the board worth voting for. The judges took full advantage of the original voices they heard this year, putting them in the perfect spot to showcase their gifts. America will soon be able to decide who stays and who goes and it has really shaped out to be one fierce group of competitors that will have you thinking, “Why can’t we have two Idols this year?” And while there were some disappointing cuts, the twist that came along at the end of the episode straightened that out right away. So we walked away from the broadcast last night in high spirits and can only hope they’ll stay there come the first live shows.

This week on American Idol, the semifinalists were chosen! Forty two contestants were cut to the top twenty four which made for some very painful eliminations yet still one of the most talented top twenty four of the series. The judges came face to face with each remaining contestant individually to give the good and bad news, with explanations in tow. While the cuts were deep and disappointing, for the most part, the eliminations made complete sense. As of yet, there were no cuts that left us speechless… but we’ll have to wait until the rest of the top twenty four is revealed tonight for that to remain true.

The remaining seventy contestants of American Idol were up for a challenge this week, being put into groups of three and four, singing music from the 50s or 60s. The Idol hopefuls took over the stage in Cirque du Soleil’s Viva Elvis Theatre at Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas and gave the performance of their lives. Finally, Idol delivered two hours of nonstop musical entertainment.
Cari Quoyser, Chase Likens, Skylar Laine, and Colton Dixon brought such a sweetness to the stage and opened the night with great satisfaction. This era fits Quoyser perfectly, don’t you think? The judges did not think that this performance was her best though and unfortunately, she was cut. What a disappointment. Laine was the one worrying about hitting her notes and not ruining the sound of the group with her distinct country sound… but she wasn’t the one the judges were concerned about.

There’s talent and then there’s wasting an hour of a two hour broadcast watching that talent faint, forget the lyrics, hit flat notes, and all around fail at reeling in the judges one more time. What could have been nicely packaged in a one hour broadcast stretched out to an hour of focusing on every single competitor hit by the sickness plague and then some before getting to the real goods. It did not help that the first group of the night was a complete mess. Calling themselves something like, Betty & the Boots, only two of the five young ladies in the group managed to continue on in the competition. Unfortunately, this team could not put aside their clashing personalities for the sake of the group or get enough sleep for the sake of their own safety to put on a show stopping performance. "American Idol" opened with 70 contestants Thursday (February 16) and ended with 42, as the Las Vegas cuts — referred to alternately as "brutal," "painful" and "deep" — lived up to their billing.
Some who made it through on the strength of their performances were later told they, in fact, didn't make it through, a new twist. The twist wasn't given a name, but it should have been called the "Gotcha!" — as in, "Oh, you thought you were going to go on to achieve your dream of being a singer? Gotcha!"
In Vegas, contestants were asked to form groups and sing songs from the '50s and '60s onstage at the Aria hotel, home to the "Viva Elvis" show.

It’s Hollywood week on American Idol, the week where some of the contestants who blew the judges away during auditions fell under pressure and others continued to shine. Of the 309 contestants brought to Hollywood, only half of them continued on. Needless to say, the pressure was on. Nerves were higher than ever. It was equally satisfying as it was disappointing to see just who made it through round one of Hollywood week. As host, Ryan Seacrest put it, “only the strong will survive.”
“Listen, none of you should have to be on that stage and beg.” – Randy Jackson
Solo performances on the Hollywood stage proved to be a piece of cake for some singers while others miserably failed to captivate the judges a second time. The latter was almost too difficult to watch. Thankfully, judge, Jennifer Lopez was still in love with Johnny Keyser and Heejun Jan as both...

America was in for quite a treat as American Idol hit Texas on their audition stops before Hollywood week. There was enough crazy to remind us that we were indeed watching Idol, but the talent that came through was unlike any other. Texas knows how to deliver the goods. If you thought that there were enough American Idols from this state, you thought wrong.
17 year old Skylar Laine is perhaps one of the most phenomenal country singers we have seen so far this season. Her album could easily make it to number one so the judges would definitely be crazy not to put her through Hollywood week. She made it past the auditions and was indeed one of the contestants who deserved the ticket the most. But this is just the beginning of the roller coaster that is Idol and soon it will be up to America to keep her through.

The "American Idol" judges have mostly seen eye-to-eye (to eye) so far this season, with the majority of contestants being passed through to Hollywood or sent back home by unanimous vote. But on Thursday's (January 26) episode, we saw several disagreements between the judges, with Jennifer Lopez giving singers a passing grade while Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson flunked them. It was implied but not explicitly spelled out that the boys were voting on looks more than voices, angering Lopez to the point where she mock-stabbed Tyler in the head with a pen.
The dissension continued with contestant Linda Williams, whose version of Alicia Keys' "Fallin' " seemed shaky, though it was good enough — or her looks were — to earn...

The American Idol Season 11 Premiere continued last night in Pittsburgh, Pa where the talent delivered almost as much Savannah did. We touched familiar ground as more of the wackier contestants made their way to the stage coming from all across the nation and there were enough sob stories to keep the tears coming for days. All in all, this was a very entertaining and moving hour long broadcast that has shed the spotlight on a few individuals worth rooting for throughout the season.
22 year old Heejun Han may have come of as an incredibly nervous oddball who doesn’t know how to have a conversation, but he does know how to sing well. In fact, he sings better than that, making the Pittsburgh auditions a stop worth taking just for him. That is how talented this kid is and it would be a shame if he did not make it through Hollywood week.

American Idol kicked off last night with Auditions in Savannah, Georgia for the first time and for once, there actually seemed to be more talent than not. The competition started off on a roll with one contestant after another getting the much desired ticket to Hollywood. Eleven seasons in and it still amazes me how ecstatic these individuals are about making it to Hollywood when that’s not even the hardest part. On the other hand, the grown adults who cannot carry a melodious tune that cry and throw fits when they do not make it to Hollywood almost makes some want to turn the channel and wait for The X Factor and The Voice to come back.
