This story about the casting of “Shrinking” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Say you’re casting a thoughtful comedy about the world of psychotherapists, and you need a seasoned veteran to support the sharp young cast in a potentially scene-stealing mentor role. And then you land one of the biggest movie stars in the world, an icon who has been in two of the largest movie franchises in the last 50 years.
This was the reality for “Shrinking” casting directors Debby Romano and Brett Benner when the AppleTV+ comedy was being put together. It still seems surreal to them that they landed Harrison Ford for the pivotal supporting role of Paul, a senior member of the practice where Jason Segel and Jessica Williams’ characters work as therapists.

CBS has given a straight-to-series 13-episode order for “Under the Dome,” based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name about a small New England town whose inhabitants struggle to survive and search for answers when they are suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. King and Steven Spielberg will executive produce the project, which was originally in development at Showtime in 2011.“This is a great novel coming to the television screen with outstanding auspices and in-season production values to create a summer programming event,” CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler said in a statement. “We’re excited to transport audiences ‘Under the Dome’ and into the extraordinary world that Stephen King has imagined.”ABC has ordered five additional episodes of Tim Allen’s “Last Man Standing” and Reba McEntire’s “Malibu Country.” (Casting directors Sheila Guthrie and Suzanne Goddard-Smythe of...

Veteran casting director Brett Benner, who hails from Pittsburgh, Pa., has run Romano/Benner Casting in Los Angeles with his partner, Debby Romano, for 11 years. They have cast such hit TV series as "Cougar Town," "One Tree Hill," "Scrubs," "Psych," and "The Drew Carey Show." Back Stage recently sought his advice for actors prepping for L.A.'s pilot season. When asked what actors might expect when they show up for an appointment at his office, Benner replies, "For pilots, we see people primarily for series regular roles. They will have their sides in advance and hopefully far enough ahead so they won't feel rushed. About 98 percent of the time, they will be put on tape. Me or Debbie and me, and sometimes a producer, will be there."He says that the first step is asking the actor if there are any questions about the material. "If not," he elaborates,...
