Best known in "B" films in Britain playing title sleuth Paul Temple, he later gained notice as Hugh Mortimer in the "Crossroads" soap opera series that ran over a decade (1965-1976).
On radio, he presented the BBC programme Movie-Go-Round. He also played the famous diarist in Meet Mr Pepys, on Capital Radio in 1974.
He lived in Petworth, Sussex in a cottage built about 1500.
