Australian-born Shakespearean actor and director, also billed as "Andre Beranger." He began in silent films with
D.W. Griffith. While in Hollywood he fabricated for himself a fake French ancestry. As a result, he was often cast as foppish or effete Frenchmen in silent films. His career petered out with the advent of sound and the last years of his film activity were in small uncredited roles at 20th Centufy-Fox; he finished up working as a draftsman for the Los Angeles City Council.
