Jay Berwanger was born on March 19, 1914 in Dubuque, Iowa, USA. He was an actor, known for The Big Game (1936). He was married to Jane Temple and Philomela Baker. He died on June 26, 2002 in Oak Brook, Illinois, USA.
Was the first player selected in the inaugural National Football League draft of college players in 1936. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but was traded to the Chicago Bears. He and Bears owner George Halas failed to come to an agreement on a salary, so Berwanger went into business instead.
Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.
Inducted into the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame in 1951 (inaugural class).
