Ben Stiller, James Woods, John Ales and more Hollywood notables have taken to social media to pay tribute to Dabney Coleman, who died at 92.
The legendary comic actor known for his roles in 9 to 5, Tootsie and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, died Thursday at his Santa Monica home, his daughter, singer Quincy Coleman, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“My father crafted his time here on Earth with a curious mind, a generous heart and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity,” she said in a statement. “As he lived, he moved through this final act of his life with elegance, excellence and mastery.”
Following the news of his death, fellow actor Stiller took to X (formerly Twitter) to write, “The great Dabney Coleman literally created, or defined, really – in a uniquely singular way — an archetype as a character actor. He was so good...

Contrary to what you may have heard, being a TV writer isn’t solely about the interminable daily ritual of placing, receiving and consuming each afternoon’s rigorously debated lunch order. No—there are also fantasy football teams to be managed and Nerf basketballs to be bounced from one end of the workspace to the other. That, plus the tricky business of using one’s imagination to dream up the characters, storylines and dialogue that so many millions of people around the world build their lives around, e.g. a highly demanding creative act that often requires just as much strategic distraction as it does pure artistic inspiration. And all this is even before we even get to strikes, AI and a post-Peak TV landscape where the number of shows are actually contracting for the first time this century.
So yeah—it’s a hard industry to build a career in.

Fans of Shelley Duvall have celebrated the first look at the Shining star’s movie comeback after two decades.
Duvall, who is best known for her starring role opposite Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick’s iconic 1980 horror, has not appeared in a film since the 2002 comedy Manna from Heaven.
In 2016, Duvall appeared on an episode of Dr Phil, discussing her mental health struggles over the years. The interview was condemned by many for being “exploitative”.
Now, Duvall is set to star in a new horror film, titled The Forest Hills, written and directed by Scott Goldberg.
In the film, Duvall plays the mother of a man tormented by harrowing visions.
“We are huge fans of The Shining and it’s honestly one of my favorite horror movies of all time, up there with John Carpenter’s Halloween and George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead with the dark tones they delivered in their movies,...

Buying your first home can be daunting to say the least. In addition to worrying about how much your new home is going to cost, you also wonder what your new neighbors will be like and if your kids will be able to make friends in the neighborhood. You might also want to make sure your new house doesn’t have a bizarre, murderous history, just to be safe.
These are some of the things Adam, played by Ryan Hansen, and Margo, played by Melissa Tang (The Kominsky Method), are faced with when they move into their first home in the horror comedy Who Invited Them. Written and directed by Duncan Birmingham in his feature film debut, Who Invited Them agilely alternates between being unnerving and hilarious, thanks to witty writing and a remarkably entertaining cast.

Marc Maron has been a comedian for 25 years. He’s had his problems. He was an angry, drunk, self involved, twice divorced compulsive mess for most of his adult life, but with the popularity of a podcast he does in his garage and a life of sobriety, his life and career are turning around. Maron explores a fictionalized version of Marc’s life, his relationships, and his career, including his incredibly popular Wtf podcast, which features conversations Marc conducts with celebrities and fellow comedians. Neurosis intact, Maron is uniquely fascinating, absolutely compelling and brutally funny.
Produced for IFC by Fox Television Studios and Denis Leary and Jim Serpico’s Apostle, Maron is directed by Oscar® winning director Luke Matheny (God of Love) and executive produced by Marc Maron, Denis Leary, Jim Serpico, Olivia Wingate, and Duncan Birmingham, who also serves as the series’ writer.

Last June, Marc Maron announced that he shot a pilot for a TV semi-adaptation of his podcast "Wtf." On Saturday, Laughspin cites insiders that IFC plans to officially announce soon that the cable channel has picked up a full ten-episode season of the show.
Maron's show (currently untitled, but possibly also called "Wtf") will join another podcast-turned-tv show on IFC's lineup, "Comedy Bang! Bang!", an off-kilter talk show with Scott Aukerman and Reggie Watts. The game show "Bunk," hosted by Kurt Braunohler, will also see its premiere next summer, and IFC's breakout comedy hit "Portlandia" will return sometime this year as well.
In the pilot for Maron's show, which IFC did not ask to be reshot, Maron plays himself -- a grizzled comedian who hosts a podcast called "Wtf," where he interviews his comedy colleagues from his garage (the pilot was even shot in his actual house). Although Laughspin reports...

It.s been a long road for Swingles. Way back in July of 2006, word first got out that Paramount snatched up Duncan Birmingham.s spec script. Then, three years later, it was announced that Zach Braff signed on not only to star in the film, but rewrite and direct it as well. Well, it.s now April of 2011 and the story about a bachelor who recruits a sharp-tongued woman who he can.t stand as his wingman has yet to come to life. So, what now? Will Swingles ever happen? While promoting his upcoming film The High Cost of Living, Braff took the time to set the record straight . or as straight as he can for the time being. .Swingles is a movie that was at Paramount that Paramount wasn.t interested in making anymore,. Zach Braff has signed with Management 360. Braff, who continues to be repped by CAA, most recently rewrote to direct Swingles, the comedy that is produced by Brad Weston and Kevin Misher that seems poised to come out of Paramount. The comedy was set there years ago when the studio bought the spec script by Duncan Birmingham. Cameron Diaz, who was attached way back then, has come back around on the romantic comedy about a guy and girl who lose their respective "wingman and wingwoman" who helped each work the dating scene. The guy and girl (who don't like each other) try to carry on by teaming up to meet singles. Braff had been managed by Industry Entertainment. While the former Scrubs star directed episodes of his series, he hasn't helmed a feature since the his well regarded 2004 debut, Garden State, which he starred in alongside Natalie Portman. Fans of alternative American rock band The Shins and quirky, romantic indie ‘dramedies’ might have a reason to celebrate again soon. Zach Braff appears to be stepping behind the camera for the first time since 2004’s Garden State. The actor has revealed in an interview with TimeOut NY that he’s hoping to direct Swingles (awful title!), a film he initially came onboard to rewrite last year.
The actor recently left long-running comedy series Scrubs to concentrate on his film career, and although Swingles isn’t an original piece like Garden State, his roles as writer, director and lead are enough to suggest that Braff is intent on putting his own unique stamp on proceedings.

Funny dude Zach Braff will follow up to his 2004 indie film Garden State with a comedy called “Swingles.”
The “Scrubs” star is currently in negotiations with Paramount Pictures to write, direct, and co-star in the film, which already has Cameron Diaz on board. Swingles is still searching for a male lead, as Braff will only play a supporting character.
The story is about “a bachelor who is dumped by his wingman and teams up with a sharp-tongued woman he can’t stand in order to meet singles.” It is based off a Duncan Birmingham spec and a draft written by Jeff Roda.
Public Enemies producer Kevin Misher will be supporting the project.
With a zippy title like “Swingles” and the inclusion of Cameron Diaz, it doesn’t seem like this Braff’s film will echo the adolescent melodramatic garbage that made Garden State so distasteful. Braff’s past forays into...

Quentin Tarentino’s new film Inglorious Basterds was screened to critics with a mixed reception. It has its fans but has plenty of detractors. Most agree that the film is an entertaining romp but way too talky. "Inglourious Basterds is great fun to watch, but the movie isn't entirely engaging. And it is defiantly an art film, not a calculatedly mainstream entertainment. Tarantino throws you out of the movie with titles, chapter headings, snatches of music. You don't jump into the world of the film in a participatory way; you watch it from a distance, appreciating the references and the masterful mise-en-scene. This is a film that will benefit from a second viewing. I can't wait to see it again." -- Anne Thompson, Variety "The film is by no means terrible -- its running time of two hours and 32 minutes races by -- but those things we think of as being Tarantino-esque,...

Zack Braff has absolute power in the land of the “Swingles.” According to Variety, Braff will direct the romantic comedy, which will be his first feature since 2004’s “Garden State.” The project already boasts leading lady Cameron Diaz, but Braff isn’t content with merely directing her. He will also be co-starring and rewriting the film.
“Swingles” centers on a bachelor who is dumped by his wingman. Zach Braff is in negotiations to direct, rewrite and co-star in the comedy Swingles for Paramount. The project was first announced last year with Cameron Diaz already attached. The story, which is based on a Duncan Birmingham spec, centers on a bachelor who is dumped by his wingman and teams up with a sharp-tongued woman he can't stand in order to meet singles. Obviously the bachelor is Braff and the new "sharp-tongued woman" is Diaz. Kevin Misher (The Interpreter, Fighting, Public Enemies) is producing the project for Paramount. No word yet on when exactly it will go into production, but it's probably later this year This isn't the first time Zach Braff has directed a movie - he wrote and directed the indie sensation Garden State back in 2004. I've never been interested in Swingles in the least, it just seems like another boring romantic comedy, and Braff's involvement doesn't make...

Zach Braff made a big splash with his directorial debut Garden State in 2004, but since then he hasn't stepped behind the camera for a feature film. However, as his starring run on "Scrubs" is set to end in the just renewed season for ABC after a final six episodes he finds himself another project. The film is called Swingles and Variety reports Braff is in negotiations to rewrite, direct and co-star in the comedy for Paramount Pictures with Cameron Diaz. The original draft of the script was penned by Duncan Birmingham and is based on a Duncan Birmingham spec script centering on a bachelor (Braff) who is dumped by his wingman and teams up with a sharp-tongued woman (Diaz) he can't stand in order to meet singles. While this will mark his second feature directorial outing, he did helm one of the segments of the upcoming ensemble New York, I Love You.

Zach Braff's been absent from our movie screens for a while now, concentrating on Scrubs instead. But now that he's finishing his turn on that hospital comedy he's headed back to Hollywood, signing on to direct, re-write and star in the comedy Swingles, with Cameron Diaz. The film centres on a single guy (Braff) who is dumped by his wingman and instead teams up with a sharp-tongued woman (Diaz) in order to meet women. The two don't get along - but we're guessing by the end of the film they've found a connection. We'd like to think that the results will, like the title, be a cross between Singles and Swingers, but we're slightly concerned that it might mean that Braff and Diaz end up going to rather icky swingers clubs, so fingers crossed we're wrong about that. The script was originally written by Duncan Birmingham and re-written by Jeff Roda.

Zach Braff is in negotiations to direct, rewrite and co-star in the comedy Swingles for Paramount Pictures. The project, which Cameron Diaz is attached to star in, would mark Braff’s first feature directing effort since the 2004 indie hit Garden State. The story centers on a bachelor who is dumped by his wingman and teams up with a sharp-tongued woman he can't stand in order to meet singles. Duncan Birmingham penned the original spec script, which Paramount acquired in 2006. Jeff Roda wrote a draft as well. Kevin Misher, whose credits include The Scorpion King, The Rundown, The Interpreter, Fighting and the upcoming Michael Mann-directed Public Enemies, is producing. Diaz, who most recently starred in What Happens in Vegas, will next be seen in the Nick Cassavetes drama My Sister’s Keeper and the Richard Kelly-helmed horror thriller The Box. Braff recently signed a deal to return for a ninth season of Scrubs.

Paramount Pictures needs Zach Braff in a major way. Maybe it is unlucky for them that Scrubs got renewed, as they're hoping that the actor will join Swingles. Not only to co-star, but to rewrite and direct as well.
Zach Braff for Swingles
Cameron Diaz has already signed on to star in the Duncan Birmingham spec but, other than that, the project has been lacking. In comes Braff, who will rewrite the script that centers on a bachelor who is dumped by his wingman and teams up with a sharp-tongued woman he can't stand in order to meet singles.
If all goes to plan, Swingles will be Zach Braff's second feature helming effort, following Garden State.

After taking on a chunk of upcoming portmanteau pic New York, I Love You, Zach Braff has decided to return to full-on film directing with Swingles. And he’s not just at the helm – he’s going to co-star with Cameron Diaz and re-write the script to boot. That sound you hear is original writers Duncan Birmingham and Jeff Roda shaking their fists to the sky and screaming, “Braaaaaaaaff!” With Diaz in the starring role, the plot will focus on a bachelor (Braff, we assume) who is dumped by his wingman...

Cameron Diaz enjoyed her biggest hit in a while with last year’s What Happens In Vegas – so it’s no surprise to find that she’s in final negotiations to return to the rom-com well with Swingles. In fact, the premise makes it sound like it’s cut from the same mean-spirited, trashy cloth as that Ashton Kutcher team-up, with Diaz set to play a sharp-tongued woman who becomes the new wingman for a guy she can’t stand, after he’s dumped by his fiancée.Two guesses what happens in the end. No, not that, that’s not legal. Try again. Yep, you got it. Still, at least Diaz is always good value. Right?Duncan Birmingham and Jeff Roda wrote the screenplay, and we have to hope that it gets more innovative and amusing than the title, which simply combines ‘Swingers’ with ‘Singles’. Mind you, if the end...

Paramount Pictures has acquired the spec Swingles by Duncan Birmingham. Kevin Misher will produce the romantic comedy through his Par-based Misher Films shingle. The story centers on a bachelor who is dumped by his wingman and teams with a sharp-tongued woman he can't stand in order to meet singles. The project marks the first spec sale for Birmingham, who said he concocted the idea for Swingles after "too many nights spent in karaoke bars." He added: "I wanted to write a hip romantic comedy about swingers who are anything but romantic. I wanted to write a film I would go see, and I hate romantic comedies." Paramount's Ed Goemans and Pam Abdy are overseeing for the studio. Patrick Baker brought the script into Misher Films.
