“Mortal Engines,” the science-fiction epic directed by Christian Rivers and produced by Peter Jackson, has delivered distributor Universal Pictures a giant lump of coal this holiday movie season. The film opened December 14 in over 3,000 U.S. theaters and only grossed $7.5 million domestically opposite a reported $110 million budget. The title didn’t fare any better internationally ($42 million globally). As box office analyst Jeff Block of Exhibitor Relations told Variety, “This is a true Christmas disaster for Universal. They took a big swing, and they struck out.”
With “Mortal Engines” becoming an instant box office bomb, the film now stands to lose over $100 million for Universal. A report from Deadline claims that number could even skyrocket to $150 million depending on how the film performs through the Christmas holiday. Even if the film managed to get to $120 million internationally, it would still cost Universal around $105 million. Deadline reports that film finance sources asked...

Sony may have thought their Ghostbusters reboot was on track to be a nice earner, but despite initially solid numbers and a decent/good critical reception, it looks like the Paul Feig-directed comedy is going to have to be considered a box office flop. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ghostbusters came in at around $180 million globally on a $144 million budget (before advertising), and will probably wind up losing about $70 million. Here's what box-office analyst Jeff Block had to say about it: "Ghostbusters is on ice until further notice. I just can't fathom the creative talents behind it — Feig, McCarthy, Wiig, etc. — slogging out another one when the reception to the first one was so mediocre." Though a Sony rep denies that the losses will be so steep, it's difficult to imagine the studio isn't disappointed with the film's overall performance - and even though Ghostbusters is yet to be...

It seems the return of the Scream franchise with a fourth installment didn’t produce the glowing box office numbers that Dimension Films wanted leaving them to axe further development on a fifth movie and exploring the possibility of rebooting the series. When Scream 4 was announced it came with Kevin Williamson’s plan for a fifth and sixth movie for a new trilogy, that may go by the wayside. E! Online has a less-than-comforting quote from box office analyst Jeff Block, with regards to the future of the meta-horror series:
“If ‘Scream 4? proved anything other than that irony is on its deathbed, it’s that horror reboots have a better chance of survival in the current cinematic marketplace than continuing sagas. If there is a ‘Scream 5?, expect it to be re-titled ‘Scream’, and don’t expect David Arquette, Courteney Cox or Neve Campbell to return unless it’s...

The Princess and the Frog is Disney's first traditionally animated feature film since 2004's Home on the Range, which eked out just $50 million at the domestic box-office; the first fairy tale we've heard of in which a princess (voiced by Dreamgirls' Anika Noni Rose) kisses a frog, then becomes one; and features a Disney cartoon's first black leading lady. Is this departure as risky as it sounds? "No," says Jeff Block, a box-office analyst with the movie-tracking firm Exhibitor Relations. "Disney pushed the envelope even further with Up, a kids' movie centered around an 80-year-old, and got its biggest hit since Finding Nemo." -- Dm
