Sony Pictures Classics announced on Wednesday that it will release Nathan Silver’s acclaimed comedy Between the Temples, starring Jason Schwartzman (Asteroid City) and Carol Kane (The Dead Don’t Die), in theaters nationwide on August 23.
The film will open against Zoë Kravitz’s debut feature Blink Twice (Amazon MGM Studios), the animated pic 200% Wolf (Viva Pictures), the remake of The Crow starring Bill Skarsgärd (Lionsgate), and the drama The Forge from Affirm Films.
Slated to make its New York debut at Tribeca in June, after playing both Sundance and Berlin to great reviews, Between the Temples follows Ben (Schwartzman), a forty-something cantor losing his voice and possibly his faith. Struggling to meet the expectations of his rabbi, congregation, and not one but two Jewish mothers (Caroline Aaron and Dolly de Leon), Ben finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher re-enters his life as an adult bat mitzvah student.

Sony Pictures Classics has picked up the world distribution rights to Nathan Silver’s offbeat Jewish comedy Between the Temples, which bowed at Sundance.
The film sees Jason Schwartzman play Ben Gottlieb, a cantor in crisis after losing his voice and who falls for Carla Kessler, an adult bat mitzvah student (Carol Kane). However the student just happens to be his former grade school music teacher.
Ben and Carla become an odd couple in a comedy that explores the complexities of belief, connection, and what it means to be a real mensch, according to the film’s synopsis. Between the Temples is directed by Silver, who co-wrote the script with C. Mason Wells.
Sony Pictures Classics in a statement said of its pick-up: “With his distinctive and unique characters, Nathan has created a story laced with acerbic wit and humor in Between the Temples, while remaining tender throughout. Audiences everywhere...

Not much is known on Fleeing – a project which Steven Soderbergh just revealed that he was a producer on. Rachael Holder‘s previous stints has been working in television, and we imagine this feature debut moved into production this past summer – which means chances are next to slim but not impossible. Based on a screenplay by Paul Zimmerman, this was shot in New York City and we’re high on the project because it features André Holland and Danielle Brooks.

The distribution/production company has been very much on the rise since their debut last year with Roman Coppola’s A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, with releases including Ginger & Rosa, Spring Breakers, and most recently The Spectacular Now.
So it should come as no surprise then that they are keen to cement their status, announcing that they have acquired U.S. rights to Chandor’s A Most Violent Year, led by Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain.

Ahead of its debut at Sundance in just a few days’ time, the teaser trailer has landed for Listen Up Philip, giving an intriguing first look at the upcoming drama.
Jason Schwartzman leads a stellar ensemble as the eponymous Philip, an author waiting for the publication of his second novel.
Anger rages in Philip as he awaits the publication of his sure-to-succeed second novel. He feels pushed out of his adopted home city by the constant crowds and noise, a deteriorating relationship with his photographer girlfriend Ashley, and his own indifference to promoting the novel. When Philip’s idol, Ike Zimmerman, offers his isolated summer home as a refuge, he finally gets the peace and quiet to focus on his favorite subject—himself.
Elisabeth Moss stars opposite as his photographer girlfriend, with Krysten Ritter, Jonathan Pryce, Josephine de La Baume, Jess Weixler, Dree Hemingway, Keith Poulson, Kate Lyn Sheil, and...

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2013 discoveries”…
Alex Ross Perry: 1) I finally saw Jean-Luc Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinema (10/30/13). Words fail me, but after sitting in a theater watching it for nearly six hours, I felt like the total sum of cinematic achievement had passed through me like a beam of light. 2) Trance a/k/a Der Fan (10/31/13, VHS at home). Very ashamed that this had eluded me for so long. This was the perfect finale to a small Halloween marathon. It seemed perilously not like a horror film, despite the looming certainty that something awful could happen at any moment. Eventually it does. 3) The Immigrant (10/09/13). I felt watching this film on a cold October morning a mere two days after finishing a five week film shoot that I was seeing a new classic. A film that will live a very long time and be very...

Production began in September, and post in October, so for Alex Ross Perry’s third feature film to be ready, he’ll have to had superpowers. Thankfully he has multi-tasker David Lowery to give him editing room pep talks. Significantly higher in budget than his micro budgeted Impolex (2009) and The Color Wheel (2011) put together, if included at the festival, Listen Up Philip holds the most eclectic ensemble of television people, indie starlets, the coolest Coppola and the wimpy man in Glengarry Glen Ross: Krysten Ritter, Elisabeth Moss, Jason Schwartzman, Jonathan Pryce, Dree Hemingway, Joséphine de La Baume and Kate Lyn Sheil.

Here is a first look at Robert Redford battling the elements in All Is Lost, the film scripted and directed J.C. Chandor, who helmed the financial crisis thriller Margin Call.Chandor met Redford at the Sundance Film Festival, and was so taken by the indie film patriarch that he wrote a project specifically for him. And Redford, who can be elusive in committing, stepped up and put himself through quite an ordeal. Deadline was first to reveal this unusual project, which has just wrapped principal photography at Baja Studios in Rosarito, Mexico. It’s a man vs. nature drama, and it’s all Redford, all the time, as he goes Jeremiah Johnson after getting lost at sea and struggling against the elements to stay alive. From the look of the photo, they put that giant water tank at Baja Studios to good use. Before The Door Pictures’ Neal Dodson and...

It’s hard to believe that Iffr is already coming to an end. Having now been here for a full and very active week filled with films, parties, new acquaintances…we feel simultaneously exhausted and rejuvenated. It is an honor to bring a film to Rotterdam.
The Patron Saints screened three times at three different venues. At the start of our first screening, there was a technical issue that threw us into a bit of a panic. It was really our fault for not showing up a few minutes early to do a tech check, but… live and learn. To our great relief the issue was only temporary and from that point on everything looked and sounded excellent. We felt very fortunate to have such engaged audiences and got the feeling they made a real commitment towards seeing the film, which is a stark and somewhat confrontational portrait of life in a nursing home.

#80. Francine - Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky And for my final pick, I'm thinking that the husband-and-wife filmmaker team of Melanie Shatzky and Brian M. Cassidy will lock up a U.S Dramatic Comp section slot for their feature (fiction) debut. Francine should be among the buzz titles of the fest for what Melissa Leo (who plays the titular lead) will bring to the role, but my high expectations for the title have plenty more to do with my viewing of the craft in the stunning Tiff preemed The Patron Saints (here's our 4-star review and interview). The pair were previously at Sundance back in 2007 with their docu short, God Provides. Gist: Francine (Melissa Leo), is a woman struggling to find her place in a downtrodden lakeside town after leaving behind a life in prison. Margin Call Trailer. J.C. Chandor‘s Margin Call (2011) movie trailer stars Zachary Quinto, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, and Penn Badgley. Margin Call‘s plot synopsis: “Set in the high-stakes world of the financial industry, Margin Call is a thriller entangling the key players at an investment firm during one perilous 24-hour period in the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis. When entry-level analyst Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto) unlocks information that could prove to be the downfall of the firm, a roller-coaster ride ensues as decisions both financial and moral catapult the lives of all involved to the brink of disaster.”
This film looks far better than Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. It would be nice to see a business movie where the business people do not talk down to the audience.
