It's a natural occurrence in art that trends, fads, subgenres, and the like must run their course. That doesn't necessarily mean they go away forever, just that their heyday is contained to a finite period of time.
Some trends are so of a moment, however, that even if their genre never goes away, the aesthetics particular to their peak can't come back completely. That's especially true of the 1980s action hero, a figure that only could have emerged during that decade of excess and one that had to say farewell once the more introspective 1990s rolled around.
As with most trends, it's debatable where to objectively define their start — and endpoints. A usually reliable bellwether is when a trend or genre is parodied or satirized. If the parody is external, it may signal the end (as 1980's "Airplane!" did regarding the disaster movie) or simply the genre's popularity (as with...

There's much more to Arnold Schwarzenegger than his time portraying T-800. Anyone familiar with his book, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story," will realize how brilliantly this title lives up to the remarkable tales he has to tell. Growing up in rural Austria amid the rubble of failed Nazi Germany, Schwarzenegger dominated the body-building world, emerging as Mr. Universe at 20 years old. He won the Mr. Olympia title a staggering seven times.
But he didn't stop there -- in fact, far from it. Moving to America, he set his sights on acting, an unlikely goal considering his size and accent. Despite these challenges, Schwarzenegger stuck at it, taking language lessons to lose his native intonation and eventually bagged film roles, including the lead in 1970's "Hercules in New York." For the film, they dubbed his voice and credited him under the name Arnold Strong. More roles followed as his accent and acting improved,...

In the 1985 action film "Commando," Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as John Matrix, a retired U.S. Army Colonel who has just 11 hours to rescue his daughter, Jenny (Alyssa Milano), from a group of mercenaries. Along the way, Matrix carjacks and forces help from Cindy (Rae Dawn Chong), a flight attendant and pilot-in-training. Finding the right actress to play the character was a challenge for the casting team.
The role of Cindy was originally written for a white actress. The film's director, Mark L. Lester told Yahoo Entertainment that 40 white actresses -- including Sharon Stone and Brigitte Nielsen -- auditioned for the role; "the usual suspects" he called them. However, it was Rae Dawn Chong, a Black Canadian woman who stood out. "She was the most comedic, and did the best reading," he said. "We were way ahead of our time in that way." Lester didn't know that behind Chong's comedic display during...

As required for any men over the age of 18 in his native Austria, action film icon Arnold Schwarzenegger served in the country's military in 1965. He, along with several other actors, were cast in the 1987 science fiction action film "Predator" due to having military experience. Two years prior, the eventual California governor starred in "Commando," in which he plays John Matrix, a retired U.S. colonel whose daughter gets kidnapped by a group of mercenaries. Matrix puts his military training to use one last time to save his daughter, Jenny (Alyssa Milano).
"Commando" is a cheesy, quippy, one-liner factory that still gets a few laughs out of me today; Schwarzenegger's comedic timing really shines in this one. Coming off the successes of "Conan the Barbarian" and "The Terminator," the film was his first big movie role in which he plays a human being with relatable human connections, highlighted by his character's bond with his daughter.

20th Century Fox bought the screenplay to 1985's "Commando" from "Teen Wolf" screenwriters Jeph Loeb and Matthew Weisman with the plan to slot Arnold Schwarzenegger into the lead role. Even after the big success of James Cameron's "The Terminator" a year earlier, Schwarzenegger saw "Commando" as a big deal. He explained why in Empire's oral history:
"'Commando' was a big step forward for me. I had only done 'Conan' and 'Terminator,' but now I got to play a gentle, loving father. He is also a fighting machine that will not stop until his objective is complete."
In the film, he plays John Matrix, a retired U.S. Army Colonel who must rescue his daughter (Alyssa Milano) after she's kidnapped by a group of mercenaries. The film allowed Schwarzenegger to showcase his wits and humor and served as the model for his macho, quippy one-liner films that followed.

Back in the early '90s, Arnold Schwarzenegger was approached to star in a new buddy cop comedy. His previous foray into the genre, "Red Heat," was shot down by critics and left in the dust by his other film that year, "Twins," so perhaps he had a reason for caution. Nevertheless, he read the script before his suspicions were confirmed: It was absolute garbage.
Most actors would have politely turned it down at that point, but Arnie is not most actors. Instead, he used it to have a little fun at the expense of his greatest screen rival, Sylvester Stallone. First, he leaked a rumor to the press that he was really excited about the prospect of starring in the movie, then he asked for a silly amount of money to take the part.

He’s played everything from an indestructible cyborg from the future in the Terminator movies, to a Russian cop in Red Heat, by way of powerful barbarian in Red Sonja – the unmistakable, cinematic force that is Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former bodybuilder turned one-man cinematic industry, whose films, be they fantasy adventure, out-and-out action or science fiction thrillers, have always packed a punch at the box office. To celebrate the release of Red Sonja on Uhd and 4K Blu-ray and DVD on 18th July, from StudioCanal, as well as Arnie’s 75th birthday this July, here are some of the best action classics starring the man himself.

If you ever wanted to make the case for 80’s action movies still being alive and well in this day and age, you just have to look at Jason Statham, with most his back catalogue bringing to mind trashy action classics like Cobra or Commando, fun and mindless fare that won’t fail to entertain. Which brings us to Mechanic: Resurrection, the sequel to the 2011 remake of Charles Bronson’s 1972 action thriller of the same name, which again sees the British action star busting heads and dispatching foes in inventive, violent ways. This time round though, the ott action is dialed all the way to eleven in a way that would make Marion Cobretti and John Matrix proud. Need an example? In the first five minutes, Bishop jumps from a cable car high up in the air onto a passing hang glider. Unfortunately, despite some flashes of insane genius from director Dennis Gansel like that,...

We recently saw the release of the trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, which started life as an independent film unrelated to Cloverfield but was rewritten as a sequel (of sorts). This got us thinking about other films that were conceived as original projects but were altered by studios to become sequels to existing franchises.
When 10 Cloverfield Lane started out, it was an independent film called The Cellar, about a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who wakes up injured and locked in the bunker-like cellar of a man (John Goodman) she’s never met before. The strange man tells her that he found after an accident and brought her there to minister to her wounds but then a cataclysmic disaster ravaged the surface world and she has to stay there. She doesn’t believe him and spends the rest of the film trying to escape, while her memories of the night of her accident slowly return.

The Die Hard series may be alive and well, but there's a unique story behind the writing of each one…
As any action fanatic will tell you, Die Hard is among the best films of its type ever made. Tautly directed by John McTiernan, deceptively well shot by cinematographer Jan de Bont, and full of charismatic turns from Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman and Bonnie Bedelia, it’s seldom been bettered, even by its sequels.
The key to the first film's success, and the sequels in their best moments, is hero John McClane. Tough, sarcastic but ultimately human and relatable, he cuts a very different figure from the beefed-up, larger-than-life heroes of 1980s and 90s action cinema. When John McClane gets shot or injured, he actually feels pain. It's something we were keenly aware of in the 1988 original, but gradually ebbed away as the Die Hard franchise drifted from thriller territory...

As the Expendables franchise dodders with stubborn muscularity towards its third instalment, the casting options seem to be dwindling. By our back-of-an-envelope calculations, the only remaining '80s action stars still mobile and capable of wielding weaponry are Michael Biehn, Mel Gibson and Jet from Gladiators. Well, Showbiz 411 is reporting that one of them has got the call on the Stallonephone. It's not Jet. It's Gibson who's said to be in talks to play The Expendables 3's big bad. If this comes together it'll represent a possible first step on the long road to public rehabilitation for Gibson, adding Martin Riggs to a Planet Hollywood-esque cast roster that already boasts John Rambo, Ivan Drago, John McClane and John Matrix (there were a lot of Johns about in the '80s). Also on board are Nicholas Cage, Steven Seagal, Milla Jovovich and possibly Wesley Snipes and Jackie Chan.Gibson, long...

So The Last Stand hasn’t quite re-affirmed Arnold Schwarzenegger as supreme ruler of the box office. At the time of writing, its worldwide box office takings are a little over $33m. That’s someway short of its reputed $45m budget, and even less than Schwarzenegger’s rumoured $29.25m salary for Terminator 3. To be fair, it was never really going to propel him back to his blockbuster days of old. Especially when his co-star is Johnny Knoxville.
And to be fairer, it’s actually a much better film than those numbers would suggest. Surprisingly violent, funny in places, hilariously clichéd in others. But it’s not a great Arnie film. And it’s not a great Arnie performance. Too much emoting,...

Today we look at at the film that kick-started the whole thing, 1988′s Die Hard. It’s tough to imagine that it’s been twenty five years since Bruce Willis burst onto the scene as detective John McClane and took down thirty or so terrorists in Die Hard. Adapted from Roderick Thorp’s novel Nothing Lasts Forever, what would become the action classic started out as a sequel to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1985 hit Commando. Nothing against John Matrix, but thank the maker that didn’t [ Read More ]

After almost eight years as governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to the big screen in a lead role in The Last Stand, releasing this week. For fans of his action movies, the best way to prepare for this is to dig into the classics of his filmography. Few Arnold films are as classic as Mark Lester’s 1985 hit Commando. Commando tells the story of retired Delta Force operative John Matrix, whose daughter Jenny (Alyssa Milano) is kidnapped to ensure he’ll assassinate a South American president. Of course, things don’t go well for the bad guys when Matrix tosses that mission aside and blows everything up in his way to rescue Jenny. It’s Arnold, post-Terminator, and he’s back. And now, to cover our butts… This game is only for people over the age of 21. Please drink responsibly, and don’t mess with a commando’s kid. Suggested...

Jack Reacher is an ideal action-hero name, following the punchy one-syllable-first-name/two-syllable-last-name rhythm of Stallone's John Rambo and John Spartan, Schwarzenegger's Jack Slater and John Matrix, and Van Damme's Chance Boudreaux. (Get your own action name here!) Yet while Cruise's character's name itself works rhythmically, the filmmakers missed a major opportunity to have the name work literally as well. His name is Jack Reacher — he should be reaching for things, constantly. And not just any things: just things with "jack" in its name. So we envisioned the Jack Reacher that Mama Reacher hoped for when she christened him. If Cruise truly wants to be the biggest action hero of the next millennium, he'd be wise to start adopting some of the following jack-reaching scenarios for Jack "The Jack-Reacher" Reacher. Werner Herzog drives off in a very German car. Jack Reacher finds a beat-up Dodge Charger and is ready to chase him down.

When last seen around these parts, fiery haired actress Tara Cardinal was doing her superhero thang alongside Lou Ferrigno in Liberator. But now she's going back in time for a whole different brand of heroics in The Legend of the Red Reaper...and guess what — she's bringing Uwe Boll along for the ride!
Written and directed by Kristen Barron Stewart, Red Reaper is an action-packed tale filled with witches, demons, war and romance — in other words, everything that makes the world of fantasy go round.
Cardinal stars as the titular Reaper, a warrior born of a witch and destined to save mankind from the return of the exiled demon horde. (No, not the Tea Party. That battle has already been fought and won.) Also appearing are David Mackey, Eliza Swenson, Christian Boeving, Shayne Leighton and Troma founder, eminent bon vivant and madman Lloyd Kaufman.
Red Reaper has been Cardinal's passion project for years.

This holiday season, the trend is to seize the high-profile anti-heroes of crime fiction and stick them up on the screen.
Some, like Alex Cross, feature characters who are no stranger to the box office. The same goes for Parker,...

There is no hope! Why do we all hate Uwe Boll when he’s such a hillarious man? I mean, really, let’s give him a break, his latest Zombie Massacre looks quite cool. Except, it’s not all (sorry, man!) about Boll this time, because Marco Ristori and Luca Boni were also in charge. They directed, of course, while Boll served as a producer. Oh, who am I kidding – Boll stars in the whole thing as (take a seat, please!) the president of the Us! Ok, that’s it – I’m officialy in love with this man! In a zombie kind of way…
So, in case you’re not so familiar with this one, let me first inform you that this movie is an adaptation based on the Wii project developed by Benjamin Krotin’s 1988 Games.
Zombie Massacre story starts with a bacteriological weapon (developed, as usual, by the Us Government to create,...

Zombie Massacre is Uwe Boll's latest film. Boll is a producer on this picture and he also has a screen credit as the American President. Picturing Boll as the President is a true nightmare. Even more nightmarish is this first official trailer for the film. In the clip, a super soldier, produced by the American government, is inadvertently unleashed on a local populace. A team of mercenaries are sent in to restore order. Who will win the day: the undead or these rogue soldiers? Zombie Massacre is based on a video game from Benjamin Krotin, which is scheduled for release in 2012 through 1988 Games. However, as 2012 draws to an end, an official release date for the game has not been confirmed. For now, forget the joystick and enjoy the film's reel below. Director/writer: Luca Boni and Marco Ristori. Cast: Uwe Boll, Tara Cardinal, Mike Mitchell, Jon Campling, Christian Boeving,...

Before Arnold Schwarzenegger was talking about oiled muscles and the "Twins" sequel you didn't really want during the "Expendables 2" panel at Comic-Con on Thursday night, festival organizers and IGN feted the former governor with a video montage of his greatest hits kills.
Now, that clip has arrived online for your viewing pleasure. Remember when Schwarzenegger's John Matrix told Sully that he'd kill him last in "Commando"? That scene is here (no lie), along with a ton of other hilarious onscreen murders and executions.
Schwarzenegger, who is in the midst of an acting comeback, co-stars in "The Expendables 2" with Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham and many more burly action heroes. He offered a few words of wisdom to those who dare to watch his video tribute on Twitter: "Warning: only watch this video if you want to see me kicking ass."
Noted.

Independent filmmakers could learn a thing or two from director Luca Boni and Marco Ristori’s upcoming action/horror flick “Zombie Massacre”. If you want to keep people interested in your flick, you have to keep the buzz going. A good way to make that happen is to the hungry masses more behind-the-scenes photos and footage than they can handle. With smartphones and apps like Instragram, there’s really no reason not to make this happen. And to whoever updates the film’s official Facebook page: Keep up the great work. I’ll definitely be back for more. “Zombie Massacre” stars Christian Boeving, Jon Campling, Mike Mitchell, Gerry Shanahan, Daniel Vivian, and Tara Cardinal, the latter of whom can be found wielding some pretty deadly weaponry in the batch of pics you see below. In case you haven’t heard, the film is based on the video game by 1988 Games,...

There are a lot of zombie movies coming out this year, but only one of them is directed by “Eaters: Rise of the Dead” masterminds Luca Boni and Marco Ristori. “Zombie Massacre”, the duo’s latest undead-related endeavor, is being proudly presented to the world by Uwe Boll. However, don’t let the “House of the Dead” director’s involvement dissuade you from checking this one out. “Eaters” was a pretty badass movie, and from the looks of things, their latest effort seems to have been fashioned from the same mold. That’s a good thing, by the way. The film is loosely based on the video game by 1988 Games, which is about a group of police officers who are charged with delivering a nuclear bomb into a zombie-infested city. The adaptation stars Christian Boeving, Jon Campling, Mike Mitchell, Gerry Shanahan, Daniel Vivian, and the lovely Tara Cardinal. You can...

Behind every great action movie, there’s some sort of flimsy excuse for the shooting. Here’s our list of genre’s five most common plotlines…
In screenwriting classes, they call it the inciting incident. For filmgoers, it’s perhaps quietly filed in the back of their brain as ‘the reason why the hero buys a gun and starts killing lots of bad guys.’
It’s often said that, in all forms of art, we’re really just telling the same stories over and over again – and so it is with the action genre. As chaotic and senseless as such films often appear to be, even the trashiest and ineptly made have at least a flimsy excuse for all the explosions and shoot-outs.
To this end, here are the five basic action movie plots as we understand them. The actors who play the heroes and villains may change, the settings may vary,...

Porn director Axel Braun broke records with the release of "Star Wars XXX," but has now set his attention back to comic books, including films like "She Hulk XXX" and "Thor XXX." Former WWE superstar Chyna will be playing She Hulk (aka Jennifer Walters) and will be joined by Gracie Glam, Lexie Belle, Jennifer Dark, Nicole Aniston, Alexis Texas, Mark Wood, Alec Knight, Alan Staford, Ryan Driller, Dale Dabone and Eric Masterson. Both "She Hulk XXX" and "Thor XXX" are set to start filming in March in Los Angeles. "Thor XXX" will include such characters as The Enchantress and The Executioner.

We don't cover these XXX comic book parodies too often, but this one was too juicy not to. According to Bleeding Cool, former WWE pro-wrestler Joanie "Chyna" Laurer will play The Green Goliath's Cousin in She Hulk XXX. At one time Chyna was a major player in WWE and is still considered one of the most popular female wrestlers of all time. Recently she has turned her attention to adult entertainment though, hence going green for this. What's interesting is Chyna is often fan-cast by people (though who knows why) wanting to see her play She-Hulk on the big screen. Well, now you will! But on a small screen, and y'know, shagging people. She will be joined by Gracie Glam, Lexie Belle, Jennifer Dark, Nicole Aniston, Alexis Texas, Mark Wood, Alec Knight, Alan Staford, Ryan Driller, Dale Dabone and Eric Masterson. Filming is expected to commence in March.

In the great big grab-bag of Hollywood movie tropes, there aren’t many as well-used or as long-serving as the protective father.
Whether a plot contains disaster, alien invasion, or meddlesome terrorists, the bond between patriarch and family is enough to inspire great feats of heroism. These men - be they Tom Cruise’s loser divorcee in War Of The Worlds, Dennis Quaid’s scientist dad in The Day After Tomorrow, or even John McClane - are protagonists to rally behind, satisfying primal instincts to provide care, safety and shelter.
While it may not seem like it at first, one of psychological drama Take Shelter’s major successes lies in its clever subversion of this trope, colliding the stock narrative conceit with a powerful psychological undertone.

IFC.com's film writer, Matt Singer, is the biggest Arnold Schwarzenegger fan on the planet. He blogs any time any news about Schwarzenegger's return to acting, no matter how flimsy or improbable, hits the Internet.
Direct from the most important entertainment news outlet on the planet -- Arnold Schwarzenegger's Twitter feed -- comes the charming photo featured above, taken on the set of the mega-ensemble action flick "The Expendables 2." Schwarzenegger! Stallone! Willis! Willis' incongruously fashion forward man-scarf! Here were the 140 or so characters that went with it.

For years the Wachowski Brothers have been coasting on their claim to fame, the futuristic sci-fi epic "The Matrix". This was their tour de force and even after two mediocre sequels people still have a soft spot in their heart for the original. What people don't know is that it is all a sham. The Wachowskis are a couple of rip-off artists. Sure, you could say that they took a lot from a wide array of influences: Neo as Jesus is pretty apparent, The Matrix is a mirror on our society (or some other such bullshit), and it can go on and on. But really, they got the entire idea from the Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle- "Commando."
Now I know what you're thinking? "This guy is crazy and grasping at straws." Straws, you say? Well how about this straw...Arnie's name in Commando is John Matrix. That's a little obvious you say?...

(With Arnold Schwarzenegger’s big screen comeback halted before it even got started, I thought it was time to post an old favourite from 2009 to remember the Arnie we love)…
We all recently bore witness to the abomination that was Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus – the most mind-numbingly awful movie since Jordan met Dane Bowers’ toe… In actual fact the Jordan movie has slightly better CGI – those breasts almost look real… but I digress.
To tie-in with possibly the most brain scrambling, out and out dumb movie to ever see the light of day currently polluting our screens, I decided to pay homage to the real king of the brainless movie: The Governator himself, Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Arnie is a cinematic icon, there is no questioning that, but he is also responsible for a veritable smorgasbord of some of the most criminal, yet genius puns and one-liners in the history of cinema.

It was like having stigmata, but in the form of tonsillitis or earache, and in retrospect, I think I may have been doing it for the attention. I had to paint my mouth with some vile antibiotic glue which tasted of boiled cow, and couldn't eat at all, but only lie sadly on the sofa with my giant swollen face in my hands, so my brother decided to cheer me up with a film fest.

Conan the Barbarian is a film about the birth of an ancient legend, but the film created its own modern legend: Arnold Schwarzenegger, the impossibly muscular, unbeatable, barely understandable, curiously noble badass. In turn, Commando is a film about a legend (super-soldier John Matrix) at the peak of his form. Coming right after Schwarzenegger’s breakout hit The Terminator, it’s no coincidence that the hallmarks of John Matrix’s life — big house, cool cars, comely flight attendant, regularly breaking the law — are also the hallmarks of a movie star’s existence. But now, on the final day of Arnoldfest ’11, we reach Predator.

Commando isn’t just an ’80s action movie, it’s the ’80s action movie. Of course, in terms of quality, it’s nowhere near as good as The Terminator or Die Hard, but in terms of big guns, nacho-cheesy dialogue, nonsense plots about vaguely Contra-like South American politics, and explosions, explosions, explosions, it’s miles ahead of the pack. So for our second day (of three) honoring Arnold Schwarzenegger’s departure from Sacramento, we look back at what might be the purest distillation of Ah-nold-ness.

We're absolutely certain you already know this, but today is the 25th anniversary of 'Commando,' one of the most ridiculous action movies of all time. Arnold Schwarzenegger, of course, stars as John Matrix, a retired Special Forces operative who is given a tough choice: He can either commit a political assassination or his teenage daughter (Alyssa Milano) gets it.
Of course no one tells John Matrix what to do, so he goes on an over-the-top path of revenge that mounts a death toll in the triple digits -- with John Matrix personally scoring a body count of 81.
Like everything else Schwarzenegger has ever done, 'Commando' is marked by complete and total domination.
Much like John Matrix invaded the fictional nation of Val Verde with a Valmet M78 light machine gun to take on ruthless dictator Arius, so has Schwarzenegger invaded American soil to manhandle the realms on fitness,...

As a general rule, I avoid any and all situations where filmmakers and film critics hang out in one place in the presence of many automatic weapons. Too much can go wrong. Why, though, do the protagonists in these films so often have utterly ridiculous names? In Die Hard, the totally ordinary sounding John McClane did just fine without having a moniker with any kind of alliteration, rhyming or jokes in it. No one sat there watching it thinking, "This film would be so much better if Bruce Willis was called 'Buck Shot'."
Still, though, Hollywood persists with the daft action hero names, and we've put a selection of...
