San Francisco, Oct 26 (Ians) Android phones’ built-in earthquake detection functionality, tested during a 5.1-magnitude earthquake near California’s San Jose on Tuesday, seems to have passed with flying colours, and also beat iPhones at alerting users.
According to Android Authority, Dave Burke, Google’s vice president of engineering for Android, tweeted a neat visualisation showing loads of Android phones detecting the quake before the shock waves hit.
“Earthquake in Sf Bay Area today. Yellow/red represents shaking Android phones acting as seismometers. Circles are our inferred estimate of P and S waves. Earthquake alerts sent instantaneously to surrounding phones before the waves hit,” he tweeted.
Several social media users reported receiving earthquake notifications five to ten seconds before they felt the shock waves on their Android phones.
Twitter users also noted that Android users received an early warning, while iPhone users received it later, according to the report.

Despicable Me 2, which we rather loved is after doing some serious business at the Irish box office. Including previews, Gru and company have raked in €1.5m so far, knocking; the all conquering Iron Man 3 off the top spot. As a result, Despicable Me 2 has this years biggest opening to date. Opening on 190 screens across Ireland, the sequel opening a 71% ahead of the original movie. And with the kids just after getting their summer holidays, there’s close to another million in this yet I reckon! Commenting on the successful opening weekend Dave Burke, General Manager of Universal Pictures International Ireland, “We are thrilled at the success of Despicable Me 2 at the Irish box office; the record-breaking result shows the huge appetite that Irish audiences have for Gru and his minions”.
