Detective Sergeant Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans) returns to Masterpiece on PBS Sunday, June 19 for three more 90-minute episodes of the popular British mystery series Endeavour. “I’m here to make sure justice gets done,” Morse asserts in the Season 8 trailer, which shows the Oxford detective and his colleagues on the trail of more murderers in 1971. He’s joined once again by Detective Chief Inspector Fred Thursday (Roger Allam), his loyal senior officer/father figure; Chief Superintendent Reginald Bright (Anton Lesser), their recently widowed boss; and Detective Sergeant Jim Strange (Sean Rigby). Other longtime characters are also returning: pathologist Max DeBryn (James Bradshaw), newspaper editor Dorothea Frazil (Abigail Thaw), and Thursday’s wife Win (Caroline O’Neill) and daughter Joan (Sara Vickers), whom Morse has been pining for since the mid-’60s. Joan was noticeably absent from Season 7 due to the actress’s real-life pregnancy. In those episodes, set in 1970, Morse had...

Endeavour Series 8 Episode 1 Review: ‘Striker’
Warning: this Endeavour review contains spoilers.
It’s 1971, and Oxford’s finest are, as ever, dealing with all of humanity’s worst impulses. Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans) wakes up late from a hangover, leaving Di Thursday (Roger Allam) waiting in vain for his usual morning lift to work from his Detective Sergeant. It’s not behaviour we’d expect from our Morse…except, of course, it is, when you think about it.
John Thaw’s Inspector was a man who suffered silently, and it’s that version of the character that the sensitive, easily hurt young man we met back in Endeavour’s pilot episode nine years ago is growing into. It isn’t going to be fun to witness, but it’s what we signed up for. The shocking events of series seven’s finale, in which any last vestiges of Morse’s innocence were snuffed out forever,...

Morse’s plan to transfer to another force has either been scrapped or put on the back burner in series eight, which finds the detective in Oxford and the Castle Gate team tackling “the most challenging of cases so far,” according to the official press release. The three-part new series picks up at the start of 1971, just after series seven’s dramatic conclusion which saw Morse’s latest doomed lover take a bullet for him and die in his arms. He certainly can pick ‘em.
The loss of the scheming Violetta Talenti, and the bad blood between Morse and Thursday have taken their toll on Endeavour in series eight, which will see him “crestfallen and rarely without a scotch in-hand” and once again struggling with his inner demons. Not that it looks like there’ll be much time for Morse to dwell on his guilt, tasked as he’ll be...

Ahead of the release of his debut album Sudden Opera in June, Georgia singer-songwriter Pony Bradshaw delivers a haunting performance of the song “Bad Teeth.” A track off the upcoming LP, its lyrics showcase the darker side of Bradshaw’s psyche, one formed by years of traveling the U.S. as the son of a military family.
Bradshaw, born James Bradshaw, sings of “muddy coffins” and “tombstones all the way down” in “Bad Teeth,” alluding to a relationship built on deceit and fear. It’s surrealist imagery that’s meant to unsettle,...

It’s 1968, a year of political unrest and social upheaval. The assassination of Martin Luther King, reported in clipped tones on a radio broadcast at the end of this opening episode of Endeavour’s fifth series, brings a chill of foreboding from the outside world to Oxford’s tranquil streets. After last week’s strong start, the fourth series continues with another engrossing case that sees Morse and his colleagues confronted by 60s counterculture and its vociferous opponents. The arrival of trendy band The Wildwood in Oxford attracts a lot of press, as does a visit by moral campaigner Joy Pettybon (Sylvestra Le Touzel). The long-haired heartthrobs are just the type of dope-smoking, free-loving hippies she loathes, and an appearance on TV show Almanac looks set to fan the flames of controversy. After a succession of death threats, Pettybon approaches the police, and Morse – much against his will – is ordered to provide protection. This brings him into contact with her unhappy daughter Bettina (Pearl Chanda) who sees the young policeman as...

The show has reintroduced us to many beloved characters and it’s given a new platform to a host of household names such as Shaun Evans and Roger Allam. Among the many familiar faces, a new star has emerged – Sean Rigby. The young actor has received rave reviews for his portrayal of Strange. Sean, kindly agreed to talk to Best British TV about the show, his role and his plans for the future.
When did you first decide you wanted to be a professional actor?
“It was when I was about 17 or 18 while I was studying performing arts at sixth form college. It had never been presented to me as a viable career option prior to that. I began to find out about the drama schools down in London.

Inspector Morse prequel Endeavour is to return for a full series. The original project, which starred Shaun Evans as a young Endeavour Morse, attracted 8.2m viewers in January. Evans will reprise the role in four 2-hour episodes, to be filmed in Oxford later in 2012. Also returning from the pilot are Roger Allam (Inspector Fred Thursday), James Bradshaw (Dr Max Debryn) and Abigail Thaw, daughter of original Inspector Morse star John Thaw. "It was fantastic that the audience responded so warmly to Endeavour," said ITV drama's Sally Haynes. "Shaun's portrayal of a legendary character was captivating and Endeavour thoroughly deserves a series - there's so much more we can do with the character." Producer Dan McCulloch added: "We're delighted to be making a series of Endeavour (more)...
