Steve Harley, the frontman of British glam rock band Cockney Rebel, died Sunday at 73 from cancer.
Harley’s family said Sunday that he had “passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side.” Harley said late last year he was being treated for “a nasty cancer.”
His best known song was “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me),” which went to No. 1 in the UK in 1975.
Harley also sang the title song of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical The Phantom of the Opera alongside Sarah Brightman when it was released as a single in 1986. He was originally cast in the title role for the stage musical, but was replaced by Michael Crawford.
Harley also presented Sounds of the ’70s on BBC Radio 2 from 1999-2008.

Yoshiki, the Japanese superstar and global renaissance man in the world of music for four decades, believes his latest creative venture as film director, in some ways, saved his life.
His debut documentary feature “Yoshiki: Under the Sky” is a concert film produced during the Covid pandemic shutdowns and features musical performances with famed collaborators as diverse as Nicole Scherzinger to St. Vincent.
Yoshiki made the project because “I wanted to lift up the spirit of my fans,” he told TheWrap as part of his Screening Series interview. “That’s the main reason. But at the same time, I was also in a dark place. Trying to help people was actually helping me.”
He continued: “There were so many [Covid] restrictions. Of course, I didn’t want to cross the line, but [to explore] how human beings feel how fragile we are, how powerless we are.”

Like many entertainers during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Japanese songwriter and musician Yoshiki wanted to find a way to use his artistry to lift people’s spirits, particularly fans who wrote to him about being in a dark place during that time.
“The intention was to spread love,” Yoshiki said during a taping of THR Presents, powered by Vision Media. “At that time there were so many amazing artists doing Zoom call-like stuff from the living room or something like that, but I wanted to do something bigger than life.”
The result is the film Yoshiki: Under the Sky, a music documentary three years in the making that features performances of the composer with acts from around the globe including American Edm-Pop duo The Chainsmokers, violinist Lindsey Stirling and singer Nicole Scherzinger.

Andrew Lloyd Webber honored his son, who died a month prior, at the final Broadway performance of The Phantom of the Opera.
After 35 years, the curtain closed Sunday on the New York production of Broadway’s longest-running show. In a video shared by the Associated Press, audience members and cast and crewmembers could be seen cheering as confetti poured down around them.
The footage also included a speech onstage from the Oscar-winning composer, who said, “I hope you won’t mind if I dedicate this performance to my son. … When he was a little boy, he heard some of this music.”
According to the AP, the composer’s ex-wife, Sarah Brightman, who was also an original castmember in the production, added, “When Andrew was writing it, he was right there, so his soul is with us. Nick, we love you very much.”

Since its release in 1977, Kansas’s most notable song has inspired dozens of covers and adaptations. Musicians have transformed the hit “Dust in the Wind” into nearly every genre imaginable, including rap and electronica. While some bands wouldn’t find the constant rewriting of their music flattering, Kansas drummer Phil Ehart has a different opinion.

The Phantom of the Opera, Broadway’s longest running show, will close in February following its 35th anniversary in January, producers have announced.
“We are sad to confirm that after 35 years on Broadway, Phantom will play its final performance at the Majestic Theatre on Saturday February 18th, 2023,” the show has announced on its website. “Tickets are currently on sale for performances through January 22nd, 2023, and we expect the final block of tickets to be placed on sale shortly.”
The news comes as the musical, known for its falling chandelier, its half-masked title character and its most famous song “The Music of the Night,” has become an icon of Broadway over the decades but has been as susceptible as other productions to the soft Covid market and weak tourist climate.
The musical has long played at the Shubert Organization’s Majestic Theatre.

Longtime friends and collaborators Antonio Banderas and Andrew Lloyd Webber are joining forces under the banner of new company Amigos Para Siempre (Aps), aimed at producing theatre, musicals and live entertainment shows, including some of Webber’s best-loved works, for major Spanish-speaking markets.
Under the initiative, Spanish-language rights to Webber’s shows will be ceded to the new company by the UK composer’s London-based company Really Useful Group.
Shows earmarked for Spanish adaptations include The Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, Starlight Express, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cinderella, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and School of Rock.
The name of the company, which translates as “friends forever”, derives from a song Webber composed for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, which was performed at the closing ceremony by Sarah Brightman and José Carreras.
The pair announced the new initiative at a media event in the Spanish capital of Madrid on Monday.

This year’s Oscars telecast incorporated reunions of cast members from classic movies such as “The Godfather,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Juno.” Last year’s Tony Awards actually did something similar, bringing together cast members from different Broadway classics such as “Hairspray,” “Ragtime,” “Rent,” and “Wicked” for performances as the industry was fighting to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the Tonys will be presenting their landmark 75th annual ceremony this year, I think it would be even more fitting if they reunite more co-stars from Broadway classics of yesteryear to perform or even present awards. Here are some suggestions. Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which you’d most like to see.

Exclusive: Singer Sarah Brightman’s first livestream Christmas concert next month will include a reunion with her former husband and partner-in-theater Andrew Lloyd Webber. The two will perform the relatively obscure Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice song “Christmas Dream.”
Brightman and Webber were married from 1984-1990, with the singer serving as something of a muse during the composer’s early, very prolific career stretch. Brightman starred in original productions of Webber’s Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, Song and Dance, Aspects of Love and Requiem. The two have remained on good terms since their divorce, but have reunited for few public events.
“Christmas Dream” is a Webber-Rice deep cut, written for the film The Odessa File in 1974 and first performed by Perry Como. The Brightman-Webber performance will feature an all-new arrangement.
The stream event, Sarah Brightman: A Christmas Symphony, is set for Sunday, Dec. 20 from London’s historic Christ Church Spitalfields.

“It’s so cringey,” said Emma Corrin, who stars as Princess Diana in Season 4 of Netflix’s “The Crown.” “It’s the worst.”
“It’s so uncomfortable,” agreed Josh O’Connor, who, as Prince Charles, is Corrin’s frequent scene partner. “It’s so horrible. I’m so sorry.”
Here’s the thing about playing the British royal family’s two very famous star-crossed lovers — there are any number of based-on-real-life scenes with Corrin and O’Connor in “The Crown” that they could be talking about. Is it the duo’s terrible engagement interview, where it becomes very apparent that Charles has little interest in his future bride? Is it the press conference in Australia where Diana fumbles incredibly basic questions about their trip Down Under? Is it when Charles watches aghast as attention-starved Diana does a surprise dance to Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl” in front of a packed audience at the Royal Opera House?...

Originally, I was holding off on digging into Joel Schumacher’s 2004 adaptation of Phantom of the Opera until later on in this series, but with his passing a few months ago, I thought that it only made sense to make the next installment of my Phantom Thread series a celebration of Schumacher’s lavish and ostentatious adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, showering it with all the adulation that it has always deserved. Many of its critics faulted this version for being too faithful to the cultural phenomenon that is Webber’s crowning achievement in live theatre, but honestly, this wasn’t ever going to be the gothic horror show from Gaston Leroux’s original novel, and I’m not sure why anyone ever expected any differently from this rendition.

The West End and Broadway musical Song amp Dance has taken up a lot of space in my CD collection. In addition to the Original London Cast Recording starring Marti Webb recorded live at the Palace Theatre in 1982, the 1984 British television broadcast from the stage of recently closed production at the Palace starring Sarah Brightman and the Original Broadway Cast Recording of just the songs half, no dance music... starring Bernadette Peters, I'm also including the original 1979 'Tell Me on a Sunday' album starring Marti Webb in her first stab at the material, from which the sung portion of Song amp Dance was derived, as well as its 2003 London production starring Denise Van Outen.

The intersection of Broadwayopera and sacred music seems like a natural fit. Both are often larger than life, both speak to a very specific message, and both use a wide range of instrumentation and vocals. On Sarah Brightman's new album, Hymn, she combines the two genres to mixed effect. While the more traditional sounds are lovely and suit her voice well, the contemporary songs tend to be overwrought.

Though it's been five years since Sarah Brightman has released a studio album - 2013's Classical chart- topper Dreamchaser - the world's best-selling soprano has hardly been idle. Not only did Brightman perform over 100 concerts on five continents to support Dreamchaser, she also brought her Gala - An Evening with Sarah Brightman tour to Asia and Mexico in 2016 and the 22-date Royal Christmas Gala tour to Europe in 2017. For both, she performed songs from her most-beloved albums - Timeless, Eden, and La Luna, and the multi-platinum soundtrack to Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, which celebrated its 30th anniversary on Broadway in 2018. Webber was inspired to write the role of Christine Daaefor Brightman - who was already well-known after releasing several hit singles as a solo artist - upon seeing her standout performance as Jemima in the original London cast of Cats. Songs On Screen: HitFix recurring feature of tributes by writers to their favorite musical moments from TV and film. Check out all the entries in the series here. There are three great songs from American film, and they are all about rainbows. “Over the Rainbow,” “Moon River” and “The Rainbow Connection” – are the three most quintessentially American songs ever to appear on screen, sung by three quintessentially American characters; and all three stand apart as plaintive cries of lonely souls dreaming of someplace far away..”Waiting round the bend” ”where troubles melt like lemondrops” for “the lovers, the dreamers and me” The things these songs share tell you everything needs to know about the character of 20th Century America. The things they don’t share tell you everything you need to know about how that character changed as the era wore on. Let’s start at the top, and the very top it is.

The Voice UK is getting through those blind auditions - we had ten more today, with six acts making it onto a team. It's a surprise the coaches had time to press their button in between all their japes - from Sir Tom's impression of an impression of himself (confused?) to Ricky's uncanny impersonation of Orville the Duck and shocking admission that he's never had a cup of tea. And no-one even answered our burning question of just what is in will.i.am's backpack.
Still, Rita, Sir Tom and will.i.am managed to add one act each to their teams - while Ricky went and bagged three more (Will kind of scorned him by saying: "Ricky's turning for everything because he's afraid of missing out" - ouch! - while Sir Tom sighed of Ricky's success: "I'm not upset about it - I'm disgusted with it.") But who had the best audition?...
