The country music community has begun mourning Toby Keith, who died Monday at 62 following a battle with cancer. His fans and peers remembered the singer and songwriter as the soundtrack to their lives and a trailblazer in his own right in various tributes shared across social media.
“Saddle up the horses, Jesus, ‘cause a true blue Cowboy just made his ride up to heaven!!! Introduce him to all the Okies and sign that boy up for the choir,” Carrie Underwood wrote on Instagram, sharing a carousel of photos with Keith over the years.

Zz Top were never really a ballad band. Think “La Grange,” “Tush,” and “Legs.” But for 1986’s Afterburner they tried their hand at a power ballad with “Rough Boy” — this was the Eighties after all. Earlier this week in Nashville, Keith Urban put his own spin on “Rough Boy” at a special event honoring Zz Top’s Billy Gibbons.
Urban was in attendance for the annual BMI Troubadour dinner, an industry event held each September by the performing-rights org to salute a select artist as its “Troubadour.” Last year’s went to Lucinda Williams,...

This year’s Stagecoach Festival was a love letter to country music’s past and a nod to its wide-open future. While the festival — the genre’s largest, most rollicking reunion that takes place in California’s low desert the week after Coachella — was sparse on guest appearances (no Axl Rose, this time), the level of showmanship and raw talent was high.

The nominations for the 54th CMA Awards are out this morning, and they don’t include country music legend Garth Brooks as a nominee for the Entertainer of the Year award.
That’s because Brooks voluntarily disqualified himself in late July, saying that he’s won too many times — seven, to be exact, including last year’s — and wants to give the opportunity to another artist.
It was a tweet from a fan that steered Brooks to the decision.
“It said, ‘Hey, man. This guy, why doesn’t he just step down (and leave) the entertainer for the next generation?’ 100% agree,” he told press according to The Tennessean. “It’s time for somebody else to hold that award.”
That leaves the possibilities open this year to Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Luke Combs and Eric Church. May the best country star win.

When it comes to the lack of gender parity at country radio, there are many forces at play, and many ways to analyze the data, from a casual glance at festival lineups to the recent report from Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative that took a look at the Billboard Hot Country Charts, which comprises sales and streaming. But perhaps nothing gives a more clear picture than statistics gleaned from the Mediabase Country Airplay charts themselves, which has not been the subject of its own independent study until now.

Reba McEntire represented country music in this year’s Kennedy Center Honors class. The Oklahoma native was in attendance as Kelly Clarkson, Lady Antebellum and Brooks & Dunn performed her songs at the December 2nd Washington, D.C., ceremony, which aired on CBS on Wednesday night.
Clarkson, resplendent in a red dress (a subtle nod to McEntire’s infamous 1993 CMAs dress), delivered a majestic take of “Fancy,” the Bobbie Gentry tale of a young girl persuaded by her mother to “be nice to the gentlemen.” A staple of McEntire’s own live show,...

Washington, D.C. — It was a celebration of a broad spectrum of American music — from country and jazz to musical theater and modern minimalism — at the 41 annual Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday.
That’s when the nation’s capital paused from its political concerns to toast eight showbiz titans for excellence: Superstar multi-hyphenates Cher and Reba McEntire, along with composer/pianist Philip Glass, and jazz saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter. Tapped for a special honor was the creative quartet behind the musical “Hamilton” – writer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, director Thomas Kail, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler and music director Alex Lacamoire.
President Donald Trump declined to attend the event for the second straight year or host the traditional pre-gala reception for honorees at the White House. The decision, while breaking with longstanding tradition, was announced earlier and was met without visible dissent since Trump’s presence would have overshadowed the event, if not impacted it directly.

While mainstream country music in the Trump era has begun to wade quietly into the realm of resistance politics — Little Big Town showing up at the March for Our Lives rally, Cam’s support for the Women’s March and artists departing en masse from their relationships with NRA Country — most have stopped short of openly supporting a candidate. Enter Brothers Osborne, one of Music Row’s most politically vocal acts. The Cma Award-winning duo will appear and perform at a Nashville fundraiser on September 18th for Tennessee Democratic gubernatorial candidate Karl Dean,...

Kix Brooks had a revelation while executive producing and starring in his new movie, You’re Gonna Miss Me — and he couldn’t be happier about it.
While working with his son Eric, who co-wrote the drama about learning the meaning of family, Brooks, 62, says he realized, “my son Eric is quite a little screenwriter.”
“He studied film and English at Vanderbilt and I was wondering about all those crazy courses he was taking, what I was paying all that money for,” says Brooks. “So we started working together and I realized he kind of knew he was doing. It’s a great feeling!

This Sunday brings the American Country Countdown Awards, a relatively fresh face on an awards circuit that already includes the CMAs, the ACMs, and the CMTs. The ACCAs debuted in 2014, replacing the American Country Awards; the event is related to the genre’s premier radio countdown show, American Country Countdown with Kix Brooks, and winners are determined by data -- sales, chart placement, tour receipts. The ACCAs did not take place in 2015, so this year's ceremony is only the second iteration of the event. Here’s five things we're looking forward to seeing on Sunday. Sam Hunt: Hunt’s Montevallo album instantly

Madonna scoffed at reports she was drunk onstage over the weekend, and the smoking gun proving she's telling the truth is right on her feet. Madonna performed in Nashville Monday night and laughed off reports she was loopy in Louisville. She was convincing on that front, but pissed off the Nashville audience in a similar way she did in Kentucky ... by taking the stage more than 2 1/2 hours late. Reba McEntire and Kix Brooks were in...

As half of the legendary country music duo Brooks & Dunn, Kix Brooks has spent decades hunting down good meals while crisscrossing the country. Eventually, he realized his happily earned gustatory knowledge (Brooks is also co-owner of Tennessee’s Arrington Vineyards) might benefit his fans — and fans of a tasty piece of beef and a good glass of the grape to wash it down with — as well. “Jumping off a tour bus, somebody’d always be hanging around the bus and you’d ask, ‘Hey, where can you get a good steak around here?’ I realized everybody’s got some 30-minute story about … Continue reading →

As one half of Brooks & Dunn, Kix Brooks happily stacked up nearly every award the genre had to offer until he and partner Ronnie Dunn called it quits five years ago. But now, Brooks has received a new honor - and the singer says he's not worthy. "It's embarrassing," Brooks says of getting the Country Music Association's first-ever Humanitarian Award at a dinner in Nashville Monday night. "To get singled out is really kind of weird. I can't think of any of my friends in this industry who don't go out of their way to give back. In our community,...

Just in time for Christmas, Kelly Clarkson has something special under her tree. It's not jewelry, it's not shoes, it's not a platinum record (she already has plenty of those). It's … a fax. Last week the singer was brainstorming Christmas songs and collaborations she might do with the artists performing in her inaugural Miracle on Broadway concert (happening this Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Bridgestone Arena on Broadway in Nashville). "I told [husband Brandon Blackstock] one of my favorite Christmas songs of all time was 'Hard Candy Christmas' and he said, 'Well, why don't you call Dolly and see if she'll come sing it with you?...

Throughout the '90s, there was no bigger country duo than Brooks & Dunn, who churned out chart-toppers like "My Maria" and "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You" and practically took the Cma Duo of the Year trophy hostage for a time, winning the category every year but one between 1992 and 2006. So we decided to ask one-half of the legendary pair, who called it quits in 2009, how country's duo of the moment, Florida Georgia Line, compares. "I like those guys," says Kix Brooks, whose syndicated radio show provides inspiration for the upcoming American Country Countdown Awards (airing live Dec. 15 at 8 p.m. Et...
