Exclusive: Matt Lanter (Jupiter’s Legacy) and newcomer Sophia Esperanza have joined Prime Video’s Motorheads cast in recurring roles, Deadline has learned exclusively.
From writer-showrunner John A. Norris, Motorheads is about first love, first heartbreak, and turning the key in your very first car. Set in a once-thriving rust-belt town that’s now searching for a glimmer of hope, the series is the adrenaline-filled story of a group of outsiders who form an unlikely friendship over a mutual love of automobiles. And while some characters will be navigating the hierarchy and rules of high school, others will be racing from a dark past.
The series also includes previously announced stars Ryan Phillippe, Nathalie Kelley, Michael Cimino, Melissa Collazo, Uriah Shelton, Drake Rodger, Johnna Dias-Watson, Josh Macqueen and Mia Healey.
Lanter will portray Darren, a wealthy and powerful father of 17-year-old Harris (Macqueen), who, like his dad, is a serious street racer.

Not sure if Cavalry Media needs someone to come to the rescue, but the shaky shingle may now see its whole house of alleged cards come tumbling down.
Already trampled by financial ills, big-name exits and lawsuits related to the fatal 2021 shooting on Alec Baldwin’s Rust, the company run by Keegan Rosenberger and Ishan Sakena now faces a dirty-laundry lawsuit from former founder Dana Brunetti.
A year and change after Brunetti, the House of Cards executive producer and ex-Cavalry chief content officer, headed out the door to pursue his own projects (as they always say), he is now suing the company for more than $1 million in “wrongfully” withheld wages and more. Or, as the lawsuit quotes Brunetti declaring to CEO Rosenberger in a tense digital November 13, 2022 exchange in which he learned he wasn’t going to get paid his $750,000-per-year salary: “I’m not going to be rolled over and squeezed.

“Why is this like a dark secret? It’s just a movie.”
Ryan O’Neal, who died this week at 82, was a smart, good-natured man who was bemused by the contradictions of Hollywood. As he nervously awaited the release of Love Story five decades ago, he respected its shroud of silence but also was perplexed by it.
“Love Story is on its own blacklist, but I don’t get why,” he observed.
The movie, of course, was the surprise hit of its year, but even the bestseller on which it was based had suddenly appeared on the “don’t talk” list.
Why the mystery?

Hollywood circa 1970 was a small town compared with the Amazon-and-Apple world of this moment, and Love Story had been preordained as an embarrassment. Every studio had rejected the screenplay, and seemingly every “money” actor had turned down the lead.

Six weeks after being convicted for possessing and transporting child sexual abuse material, former ABC News producer James Gordon Meek and his footprint in the world of investigative journalism are quietly disappearing.
Hulu removed Meek’s Emmy-nominated documentary “3212 Un-Redacted” from its platform this past week. The film, which delves into the deaths of four U.S. Special Forces soldiers in Africa and exposes a government cover-up, was produced by ABC News and first launched on Hulu in November 2021.
A source familiar with the matter says the film’s licensing window expired and will not be renewed. Although the film, which is based on Meek’s reporting, was considered an impressive feat of investigative journalism, the prospect of keeping it on Hulu became untenable given that the disgraced producer is featured prominently on camera.

Range Media Partners has signed filmmaker Kat Wood for representation.
The U.K.-born and L.A.-based director and screenwriter was a BBC broadcast journalist before making her mark on Hollywood. Wood, who was named to Screen International’s “Stars of Tomorrow” list, has shown her proficiency as a screenwriter, setting up a high-profile genre feature every year for the last six years.
Last August, Thunder Road Pictures optioned “Enigma,” Wood’s original contemporary supernatural spy thriller. The film – which Wood will executive produce — follows British spy Emma Taylor who is suddenly tasked with hiding a mysterious and dangerous artifact that falls into her hands. The project has been described as a “reverse Indiana Jones,” meaning that the story is about someone whose job is focused on “hiding rather than finding,” thus turning traditional adventure film tropes on their head.

Fresh off the $1 billion-plus success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the next big-deal video game adaptation has dropped its first trailer and poster. Rather than attempt to make a workable fictional narrative from a series of racing video games, the filmmakers have opted to adapt a true story connected to the games.
The film, penned by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin, and helmed by “District 11” director Neil Blomkamp, is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe in the film) whose video game skills won a series of Nissan competitions and allowed him a shot at being an actual race car driver. “From Gamer to Racer,” the tagline states and it’s an interesting narrative that would be intriguing even sans the IP surrounding it.

Ready, set, race.
The PlayStation video game franchise “Gran Turismo” inspired the real-life story of Jann Mardenborough, a young teenager who began a racing career. Now, director Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”) is bringing that story to the big screen.
“Gran Turismo” stars Archie Madekwe as the aforementioned teen who aspires to become a professional race car driver with the help of his trainer (David Harbour) and a motorsport marketing executive (Orlando Bloom). Djimon Hounsou portrays Mardenborough’s father, while Darren Barnet plays a Gt Academy driver threatened by his new opponent.
“Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski was originally set to helm the feature in 2015. Also that same year, Blomkamp was attached to a fifth “Alien” film starring Sigourney Weaver.
The “Gran Turismo” video game is a racing simulation from developer Polyphony Digital, led by Kazunori Yamauchi. The original game featured recreations of real-life vehicles and spurred a 14-installment franchise...

The first trailer for director Neil Blomkamp’s “Gran Turismo,” adapted from the popular PlayStation video game racing franchise, has been released.
Blomkamp, whose notable directing credits include “District 9” and “Elysium,” departs from his typical science fiction subject matter to take on the sports racing film. Based on a true story, “Gran Turismo” follows a young teenager who’s obsessed with playing the racing video game and gradually takes his controller skills onto a real racetrack with hopes to become a professional race car driver. Archie Madekwe plays the film’s main character, with David Harbour as his racing trainer, Djimon Hounsou as the teenager’s father and Orlando Bloom as a motorsport marketing executive. Darren Barnet plays a respected Gt Academy driver who feels threatened by the teenager’s fast-growing success.
The racing simulation video game franchise began in 1997 with a self-titled entry from developer Polyphony Digital, spearheaded by Kazunori Yamauchi.

Exclusive: We’ve heard from sources that Jason Seagraves has exited Cavalry Media as their SVP of Development.

We’re hearing that the company co-founded by Keegan Rosenberger and the recently exited Dana Brunetti is in financial chaos. How desperate is it? The firm’s 14-person staff have not been paid in months, and they have been without benefits for that long.
Some employees are owed as much as $50K to a half-million in back pay and commissions. While staffers have been promised by Rosenberger and Cavalry CFO Reid Rogers that more money is on its way in pending deals, they are tired of hearing excuses. Sony’s “Gran Turismo” is an interesting experiment — a movie adaptation of the long running video game series that also manages to be based on a true story. And at the Consumer Electronic Show 2023 on Wednesday, the studio unveiled a preview that seeks to assure you this will in fact be the kind of movie you’ll want to watch in a movie theater.
How do we know? Because the film’s main stars — Archie Madekwe, David Harbour and Orlando Bloom — made sure to mention it whenever the camera pans to them. But also, the footage we see from the actual movie does, in fact, look pretty sick, so we’ll go ahead and trust them. Watch the clip above now.

Gearheads are gonna be eatin' good very, very soon. It's been rumored for months that Neill Blomkamp was going to be directing a movie for Sony based on the ridiculously popular "Gran Turismo" video game series, and thanks to an exclusive release from The Hollywood Reporter, these rumors are now a reality. Best known for his action-packed forays into science fiction, Blomkamp's film will be based on not just the best-selling PlayStation game of all time of the same name, but also a true story inspired by one of the game's players.
Considering "Gran Turismo" is a hyper-realistic racing simulator known more for its remarkably accurate driving physics emulation and licensed vehicles, the lack of a plot had plenty wondering how it would even be possible to turn the game into a feature film. Fortunately, a script by Jason Hall ("American Sniper") and Zach Baylin ("King Richard") has the answer.

Netflix has set a Sept. 22 release date for “Thai Cave Rescue,” its six-part mini series about the dramatic events of July 2018 when 12 boys and their football coach were trapped in flooded limestone caves near Chiang Rai.
Their plight sparked an unprecedented international rescue effort that ended with the loss of just one life and a flurry of film and TV productions.
The Netflix series is at least the fourth on-screen retelling of the rescue tale and will follow two other efforts releasing over the next weeks. Netflix touts its series as “the most authentic and expansive retelling yet.”
First into the market, in 2019, was “The Cave,” by Thai-British director-producer Tom Waller, which mixed reconstructions and news footage. It gave prominent position to Europe-based rescue diver Jim Warny playing himself. And it broke ground by clearly depicting the controversial decision to fully sedate the boys during their extraction. Despite pushback from provincial officials,...

Oh, what hatred of a toxic boss can drive you to do.
Kiernan Shipka stars as bright-eyed intern Lou Simms, who starts her apprenticeship at Hollywood production studio Fountain Pictures to learn from the best of the best, CEO Joyce Holt (Diane Kruger), in “Swimming with Sharks.” Yet Lou’s dreams of stardom seem to come with a darker edge as her complex plot against Joyce unravels. It was no accident that Lou was selected to join Fountain Pictures, and she’s going to do more than just get her feet wet in the secrets of the studio.
Part “The Assistant,” part “All About Eve,” the Roku Channel original warns that “proximity to greatness is intoxicating”…and deadly.
“Swimming with Sharks” debuted its trailer during Roku’s first-ever SXSW event. The series is set to premiere on April 15, with all six 30-minute episodes streaming for free on The Roku Channel.

“You have no brain. No judgement calls are necessary. What you think means nothing. What you feel means nothing. You are here for me. You are here to protect my interests and to serve my needs.”
That’s the iconic line spewed by a toxic movie producer to his rattled assistant in “Swimming With Sharks,” the 1994 George Huang film. Within the industry, the movie has been referenced as hyperrealistic and the subject of many inside jokes. Today, however, Variety can exclusively reveal the first trailer for a full-stop reboot of the property from creator Kathleen Robertson.
A flagship original from Roku, the current “Swimming With Sharks” brings two forces to be reckoned with in Diane Kruger, the take-no-prisoners studio chief, and Kiernan Shipka, her cunning intern who will stop at nothing to become her professional idol. Gritty, psychological scripted drama “Swimming With Sharks,” starring Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger, will debut on The Roku Channel this April. The leads were previously announced back in February 2020, when the series was previously under Quibi. Donald Sutherland, Ross Butler, Thomas Dekker, Finn Jones, Erica Alexander and Gerardo Celasco also star alongside Shipka and Kruger.
“Swimming With Sharks” will feature six half-hour episodes. Kruger (“In the Fade”) will play Joyce Holt, studio head of Fountain Pictures, while Shipka will play Joyce’s intern, Lou Simms, who develops an extreme obsession with her boss. The show follows the great undertakings Lou — who is anything but a naive newcomer to the industry — will go to get closer to Joyce.
“Historically, Hollywood has always represented reinvention, rebirth. Starting over. There has never been a better time to embrace that” said showrunner and creator Kathleen Robertson in a statement. “My goal was to subvert...
