It was his mother, Cècile, who invented the story about an orphaned elephant to amuse Laurent and his brother Thierry, who repeated it to
their father. Jean de Brunhoff named the elephant Babar, developed the plot and wrote a book for them: "L'Histoire de Babar, le petit Elephant" (The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant).
