Students from the Internet and Mobile Concentration Classes at the Television Department of Columbia College Chicago released the first episode of their original web series The Rent, a comedy about three careless friends who dream up crazy schemes to earn rent money before they get evicted from their apartment. The first of six episodes premiered May 13 with a new installment every Thursday at 9:00 pm (Central). The three central characters, played by Brendan Carney, Nick Bender, and Kevin Quatman, plot get rich schemes that range form sex tapes to blackmail to illegal conspiracies—perhaps they should take a few notes from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The Rent follows Columbia College’s successful 2009 web series Sexperts, which cleverly leveraged the audiences of YouTube celebrities like Michael Buckley, Valentina of Val’s Art Diary, and Tony Huyin (thewinekone) by casting them as townsfolk appearing in Skype videos on the show.

Last week was big news with RayWilliamJohnson passing UniversalMusicGroup. This week is big news because ShaneDawsonTV passed Smosh to move into the number 3 all time most subscribed spot. Smosh has been in the top 100 (and at the top of it) essentially since the beginning of YouTube. In a year and a half Shane has gone from being relatively unknown to 3rd most subscribed of all time. That statistic alone from his illustrious YouTube career demands respect. He is a leader of the new generation of YouTubers having only joined the site in March of 2008. In comparison the only other person to do so well in a short amount of time is RayWilliamJohnson, currently at 5th. Ray began his rise last summer and like Shane joined YouTube in 2008. While currently Shane has the numbers to pass Fred and claim 2nd, he doesn’t have the numbers to hit number 1. Another small...

With an open, neutral network – the internet – every single person, regardless of age, race, class, religion, or any other distinction – has the exact same access to give and receive information. The internet was founded upon this principle, and it is the purest form of democracy – true equality. Net neutrality guarantees that your website featuring a comedy series about 20-somethings living together in one apartment, my website featuring a mystery series about a young woman who will be killed by one of her seven friends, and a website owned by the largest telecommunications company in the world, are All Equal in the eyes of the internet. Because of this net neutrality, one website cannot be discriminated against so long as it adheres to the law, and does nothing to harm the network. In the realm of New Media, this kind of freedom has allowed for an explosion of innovative, independent new voices,...

Today the Board of Directors of the International Academy of Web Television announced that it has selected YouTube's Co-founder and CEO Chad Hurley to receive the Academy's inaugural Visionary Award at the 2nd Annual Streamy Awards this Sunday night. The annual Streamy Visionary Award honors leaders and innovators who have made a significant contribution to the digital entertainment community. “I’m honored to be recognized with the Visionary Award,” said Hurley about the honor. “Thanks to the YouTube community, the media platform we created has grown into a destination where billions of people connect and shape the world through video each day." And connect people it does—YouTube serves over a billion videos every single day. There's also that oft-quoted, and ever-growing, statistic that every minute, 20 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube. One way or another, YouTube intersects and shapes the future of web video viewing and the future of online shows.

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...

Chris Elliott has been tapped as the lead of "Eagleheart," a live-action comedy pilot for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.
Meanwhile, Nate Corddry has signed as a lead voice on Cartoon Network's upcoming animated series "Horrorbots." He also has landed a role in the live-action/CG feature "Yogi Bear."
"Eagleheart," from Conan O'Brien's Conaco Prods. and Dakota Pictures, centers on a low-level television executive sent to Texas to produce the action series "Eagleheart." He finds himself stuck in a never-ending power struggle with his temperamental star/creator/exec producer (Elliott), a veteran action star past his prime who uses the show as a soapbox for his right-wing politics and conservative paranoia.
Michael Koman and Andrew Weinberg penned the script and are exec producing with Troy Miller and David Kissinger.

No, you're not being punk'd: Ashton Kutcher has officially delivered Facebook's first hit Web series. Since its February premiere, more than 9 million people have watched Katalyst HQ, an Office-like mocumentary that's sponsored by Hot Pockets and promoted by Slide, a popular content-sharing app. Should other Web series copy its business model?
At an ad conference on Tuesday, Kutcher cited Katalyst's virality--the average viewer forwards clips to 62 friends--as proof that "branded content" can still score with fans. "When brands are able to be showcased within Web video content in funny, nonintrusive ways," he told AdWeek Media, "people are happy to consume it."
He may have a point. When 14-year-old YouTube star Fred (née Lucas Cruikshank) created funny, original ZipIt mobile videos--at least, I'm assuming they would seem funny and original if I were 14--as part of his hit Web series, more than 2 million fans tuned in. Similarly, Lisa Kudrow's award-winning...

In July of 2008, one of the very few online celebrities capable of making a six-figure income solely from YouTube’s Partner Program decided to promote an little known network with a fledgling audience but a goldmine of nostalgia-inducing entertainment. When Michael Buckley first shouted out to Sony’s Minisode Network (which condenses half-hour episodes of Bewitched, Fat Albert, The Facts of Life and other classic television shows into five-minute snacks easily palatable for an Add-ridden, online generation) on his hyper-caffeinated pop culture show What the Buck?, the channel had 4,000 subscribers. Six months later, the count now reads over 25,000. Was that increase just a matter of time? Or the magic of Michael Buckley? Sony seems to think the latter, and has such confidence in the promotional power of the YouTube star they’ve signed him up for a monthly series to pimp their re-cut, re-purposed product. The Minisode Maniac is the...

Musicians and web celebrities gathered en masse for YouTube's first-ever live webcast on Saturday including Michael Buckley, will.i.am and of course Obama Girl. The concert attracted a less-than stellar 700,000 concurrent viewers at its peak according to a TechCrunch analysis of streaming partner Akamai's active stream data. (MSN's Live Earth concert reached more than 10 million during its last event, by comparison.) Incidentally Black Eyed Peas front man will.i.am will also appear in the next Live Earth concert on Dec. 7 at Andheri Sports Complex in Mumbai India, along with Bon Jovi, Roger Waters and a variety of Indian stars.

We attended the AFI Digifest yesterday, where HBOlab gave us a preview of their season finale cliff hanger of Hooking Up. I smell second season. A few hints: Meg (Jessica Rose) may be facing a big break-up, but she's not going to end up lonely. If you've been deeply following the show (i.e. you're friends with Hooking Up on Facebook or better yet the show's own social network: Baskbook) you know about the character of Dylan's hidden plot line, or in TV-speak, the show's b-story. Dylan met Meg at freshman orientation, they hooked up, and he's been trying to get her attention every since. If there is a second season of Hooking Up it's safe to say Dyan's day is coming. But perhaps the bigger question is, has Hooking Up been a successful experiment? It's safe to say that so far HBOlab has ventured into the land of web television somewhat cautiously.

One-hit wonder Tay Zonday, the booming baritone behind Chocolate Rain, has won an award for his viral video. Zonday, 25, was one of 12 winners of the second annual YouTube Video Awards, voted by viewers of the online user-made clips of 2007. "It's the new Emmys," Zonday, 25, said of the video-sharing site's awards in a telephone interview with the Associated Press. "It's the next Oscars. The next People's Choice Awards. It'll be interesting to see what happens five years, 10 years [from now]." Previously unknown, Zonday's enigmatic song was seen around the nation after critical mass was reached via YouTube. TV appearances followed, culminating in his...
