Willem Dafoe is a yogi when it comes to career dexterity. He’s equally comfortable in big, flashy blockbusters as ambitious, auteur-driven projects, juggling leading and supporting roles with ease. By the time he’s spotted in a misfire, he’s already got a gem in the pipeline. “The Florida Project” represents one of his most engaging performances in years, and makes him an Oscar frontrunner for best supporting actor, but it’a also a fraction of his recent output.
Two months before the Cannes premiere of “The Florida Project,” in which he’s the only veteran in a cast dominated by non-professionals, he surfaced in a cartoonish role opposite Matt Damon in the international blockbuster “The Great Wall,” and landed in two Netflix genre films — “What Happened to Monday” and “Death Note” — before the end of the summer. As “The Florida Project” finally comes out in U.S. theaters,...

You might think that a show about stand-up comedians would, you know, make you laugh a time or two. But Showtime’s morose, cliché-riddled new drama I’m Dying Up Here — premiering this Sunday at 10/9c — is more likely to make you hate yourself, everyone around you and humanity in general.

Our host for tonight is Elizabeth Banks, aka not Donald Trump Thank God. In addition to not being a racist overgrown oompa loompa, Banks’s other credits include being the director, producer, and co-star of last summer’s Pitch Perfect 2, a key supporting actress in The Hunger Games franchise, a beloved guest star on shows from Scrubs to 30 Rock, and a generally very funny actress/director/producer. And now she can add first-time SNL host to the list! Cold Open: Cecily Strong delivers a heartfelt message on behalf of New York City to the people of Paris. This was a really classy move on SNL’s part, reminiscent of the warm way they handled their first episodes post-9/11. All in all a well-handled and somber start to the night. Monologue: Elizabeth Banks uses the skills she picked up from Pitch Perfect 2 to direct her own musical monologue performance of What a Feeling.

Yes, it's really been 60 years since Mickey Mouse Club premiered on ABC. To cap off the D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif., Sunday, a few original Mouseketeers—including Sherry Alberoni, Sharon Baird, Bobby Burgess, Tommy Cole, Darlene Gillespie, Cubby O'Brien and Doreen Tracey—reunited on stage to reminisce with Lorraine Santoli, author of The Official Mickey Mouse Club Book. "The Mickey Mouse Club was a television phenomenon," Santoli said of the beloved and family friendly variety series, which aired intermittently on ABC and Disney Chanel from 1955 to 1996, "and it's something that fans still love 60 years later." (It's no coincidence that Disneyland is in the midst...

Disney's "Frozen" is a bona fide phenomenon. It's become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, spawned oodles of merchandise, and is currently being spun off as theme park attractions, Broadway musicals, Disney-on-Ice spectaculars and, we're assuming, a line of high-end Olaf-flavored snow cones. The latest piece of the "Frozen" puzzle, however, is the dazzling new seven-minute short "Frozen Fever" that makes its debut attached to "Cinderella" starting this weekend.
The short is centered around Anna's birthday; Elsa, having spent so many years in seclusion, wants it to be perfect. But since she's come down with a cold, things don't go exactly as planned. (We'll keep things vague -- we don't want to spoil a second if it!) The entire "Frozen" team returns for the short, from voice talents Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad, to songwriters Bobby and Kristen Lopez (yes, there's another insidiously infectious song...

On Thursday, Bobbi Kristina Brown, the only child of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, was Tweeting up a storm about everything from garlic fries and a fishtail braid to more cryptic messages like, "On my own." Less than 48 hours later, the 21-year-old was found unresponsive in the bathtub of her Roswell, Georgia, home and rushed to the hospital. It's been almost three years since her mother was found dead in a bathtub in L.A. on the day before the Grammy Awards, an accidental drowning caused by a combination of drug use and heart disease. Devastated by her mother's death,...

Would you like to hear Cameron Diaz and Bobby Canavale sing? Buy a ticket for "Annie" in theaters this week and you can! Then again, why wait. HitFix's Josh Lasser gets the stars of the new musical to belt their hearts out on a karaoke version of "Tomorrow" in the above-embedded video interview, which also has Diaz waxing poetic on why the musical's songs still appeal today: "They're just really upbeat, optimistic...when I think of these songs, they kind of like, they're going outward but they're also going in inward," she said. "They're soaring high but then they're drawing you in deep, you know? That's a nice juxtaposition." So what's Bobby's favorite karaoke song? And why doesn't Cameron think Rob Marshall or Baz Luhrmann would ever cast her in one of their film musicals? Find out by watching the full interview. "Annie" hits theaters on December 19.

For Josh Gad, who grew up during the "Disney Renaissance" of the late '80s and '90s, playing scene-stealing talking snowman named Olaf in "Frozen" is a childhood dream come true -- getting a song in a Disney movie, that is, not playing a living, breathing snowman. And while Disney has ceded the top spot in the animated movie landscape to Pixar in recent years, "Frozen" feels like a return to the same kind of classic Disney magic that Gad grew up with, only with a few modern twists.
Like "The Little Mermaid," "Frozen" is inspired by a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, and tells the story of two royal sisters Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Broadway star Idina Menzel). When Elsa's ability to create ice and snow (and her inability to control it) freezes over their kingdom, Anna must set out to find Elsa and reverse the eternal winter.

While not all of 2013's Emmy nominees died on "Law & Order" (some of them had to be the killer/rapist/criminal mastermind), 29 of them have a connection with one or more installment of the "L&O" franchise.
"Homeland's" Morena Baccarin did her time as a "Criminal Intent" extra, and "30 Rock" nominee Alec Baldwin has actually never been on "Law & Order." But he did get a co-credit for the story that became Season 8's "Tabloid."

Dawson’s Creek. Jack & Bobby. Everwood. Brothers & Sisters. Political Animals. Arrow.
The one thing all these memorable series (and more than a few others) have in common is one man – Greg Berlanti.
The out writer/producer/director burst onto the TV landscape back when he wrote many of the key episodes of Dawson’s dealing with the coming out of Jack McPhee (Kerr Smith). Since then he has regularly featured gay characters and stories in his work but admirably also hasn’t forced them into shows (like last season’s Golden Boy) where they didn’t necessarily fit creatively.
As his latest series, the CW’s The Tomorrow People, readies to premiere in October with star Robbie Amell (cousin to Arrow’s Stephen Amell), Berlanti sat down with us to talk about his career, his thoughts on gay characters and whether we’ll see any in his latest show.

Hodor! Hodor. Okay, so we’re more or less caught up with everyone now that Bran’s crew, Arya’s gang, and Theon are all accounted for. But this being Game of Thrones, we’ve also been loaded with a ton of new information to process and a bunch of people to care about/sort-of-recognize next time they appear. We open on Bran, no less pretty than last season, but looking somewhat less like Emily Mortimer now that he’s a teenager. (Fun fact I just learned from Wikipedia: Tomorrow is actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright’s birthday.) Bran, Bobby Draper Rickon, Hodor, and Osha are still on the move to the Wall, following the mutiny against Theon in Winterfell. In the opener, Bran is having another vision-dream: He’s running through a green wood — echoing Sam’s galumphing through the snow in episode one — and comes across the screeching three-eyed raven.

Things got heated this week on Smash — in the bedroom, in rehearsal spaces, even in the offices of The New York Times.
Plus, a pair of supporting characters (sadly, not Bobby and Jessica) each got a musical number, frenemies Tom and Derek had another bonding moment, and Jimmy continued to act like a petulant manchild. (Where’s Eileen with one of her “throwing martinis” when you need ‘em nowadays?)
Let’s recap the action (while collectively pretending that NBC isn’t really banishing the maddening/addictive musical drama to Saturday nights starting April 6).

Here's even more reason to keep hoping for Last Resort to survive (aside from being a very compelling show): Sam Page will appear on the thriller, playing the brother of military contractor, Kylie.
Happy Endings has found Brad's new boss — David Alan Grier will play the role.
I've repeatedly suppressed the urge to wish for Count Vertigo to appear on Arrow. He's the only Green Arrow villain I know (aside from heroin addiction) but he also doesn't belong to the non-powered corner of the DC Universe. Thus, imagine my surprise at the news that Vertigo will be the season's big villain... and interestingly he'll have some version of his powers. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for Cheshire, though.
Reelz will air the second season of Bomb Girls.
ABC is developing a comedy starring out Chelsea Lately panelist Fortune Feimster.

Unless, of course, you count setting a murder to a glitter globe version of “It’s a Small World.” Was that more, less, or equally as brilliantly twisted as setting multiple homicides to “What a Wonderful World” in the season 4 premiere? Let’s face it: There are a whole lot of new stage productions opening in New York City this fall. Some shows boast legendary veterans like Al Pacino (left) and Sigourney Weaver. Others promise young stars like Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal. For still others, the title alone (a 50th anniversary revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, anyone?) may be the biggest draw. Here are the 10 that have us most eager to line up for tickets.

Supernatural Review, Season 7, Episode 7: “The Mentalists”
Written by Ben Acker & Ben Blacker
Directed by Mike Rohl
Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on the CW
This week, on Supernatural: The Universe just won’t let Sam and Dean quit each other, Ellen makes her voice heard, and pretenders shouldn’t play with Ouija boards.
Supernatural has been on a bit of a run, smartly balancing horror and comedy, and that trend continues this week. However, “The Mentalists” succeeds where most of the other episodes this season have failed, with its emotion and look at the Sam and Dean relationship. It also manages to succeed despite the absence of Bobby; Jim Beaver has long been one of the strongest assets to the series, and it’s easy for episodes without him to feel somehow lacking. It’s not a particularly standout episode, but it’s one that feels increasingly solid upon further reflection.

How good is your memory? On the night in 1984 when she was assaulted and raped in her apartment, Jennifer Thompson-Cannino thought her memory was excellent. During those agonizing 45 minutes, she concentrated on remembering her attacker's face, body and clothing. Based entirely on her identification, Ronald Cotton was mistakenly convicted of the crime and sentenced to over fifty years in prison, not once, but twice. At the second trial, the defense even brought the true perpetrator to court, but the judge would not allow the jury to consider his testimony. Cotton does look remarkably similar to the man who assaulted Thopmson-Cannino, but he was innocent. Jennifer was so certain of her identification, she did not even recognize Bobby Poole as her actual attacker when she saw him in court at the second trial.

A reluctant Hollywood child star, he returned to the spotlight in the Superman movies
Jackie Cooper, who has died aged 88, was the first child star of the talkies, paving the way for Freddie Bartholomew, Shirley Temple and Mickey Rooney. While they could turn on the waterworks when called for, Cooper beat them all easily at the crying game. Little Jackie, from the age of eight until his early teens, blubbed his way effectively through a number of tearjerkers. Sometimes he would try to suppress his tears, pouting and saying, "Ah, shucks! Ah, shucks!" As a critic wrote in 1934: "Jackie Cooper's tear ducts, having been more or less in abeyance for the past few months, have been opened up to provide an autumn freshet in Peck's Bad Boy."
Cooper had started off in the movies billed as "the little tough guy" in eight of Hal Roach's Our Gang comedy shorts.

Previously, Samuel Colt made the world's largest Devil's Trap (Does Guinness know about this?) , Dean time traveled to 1973, Eve came from Purgatory and created the herpes worm but she was all talk and no action
In Sunrise, Wyoming on March 5, 1861, standard spaghetti western music plays on a dusty deserted street. Two cowboys with spurs that jingle-jangle standoff while nervous townspeople appear through windows. Apparently 3 people live in Sunrise. The cowboys dramatically draw back their coats in tandem and we flash onto a Sheriff badge. Well howdy Sheriff Dean. He looks intensely as a clock nears noon. Yep, it's an old-fashioned showdown. Guns are drawn but we fade to a map of old Wyoming. Bwah! It's a Bonanza-style title card. As flames burn the middle, a flaming yellow "Supernatural" appears, before the discordant sound of the usual glass breaking. They always get the title sequence for "very special" episodes dead right.

Lots of spoilers and tidbits came out of the Supernatural panel at PaleyFest today, but what had fans very excited was the sneak peek the audience was treated to for the upcoming Old West episode.
Airing on April 22, the episode (which we believe is entitled "Frontierland") will have Sam and Dean sent back to 1861 Wyoming to track down the Colt and a mysterious creature named Phoenix. The shows stars, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, said that they had a great time filming the episode.
The sneak peek for the episode is featured in the first few minutes of the video below (which was filmed by an audience member named Candace Wilson). We initially see two men squaring off - a show-down at high noon, perhaps? One of them is Dean Winchester, who looks mighty fine as a cowboy. Then we see other scenes: the boys dressing up in Old West...

Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro have enjoyed an extraordinary working relationship for over four decades. Their collaborations have resulted in some of cinema history’s greatest works. Raging Bull is among them and the 30th anniversary edition of the landmark film is now out on Blu-ray and DVD. Released in 1980, this compelling true story of middleweight boxing champ Jake Lamotta chronicles the fighter’s rise and fall from grace, his troubled personal relationships and his dark inner demons. Robert De Niro won his second Oscar for portraying this fascinating individual.

Hard to believe that it has been 30 years since Robert De Niro pulled the original Christian Bale method-acting-insanity trick and hung the health consequences to balloon in weight for the role of Jake ‘The Bronx Bull’ La Motta. But blu-ray boxes don’t lie (pffft!), and this week’s 30th Anniversary Special Edition Blu-Ray is pretty firm evidence.
But, can we start with the cover? The film features some of the most iconic images in cinematic history- one of which the Special Edition DVD cover took advantage of to such success- and yet this celebratory edition features a bloated close-up image that looks more like a bad wax-work of Sylvester Stallone. Bad decision.
For anyone who doesn’t know the story, Raging Bull is effectively the filmic counter-point to films like The Wrestler and The Fighter. While they purport to be about complex humanist stories of redemption, they simply cannot...

Chicago – After Robert De Niro’s “Pupkin”-esque acceptance speech on Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, some of our younger readers may be curious about some of the films that got him to that awkward moment. His second Oscar came for what is undeniably one of the best performances of all time. De Niro would give at least a dozen great performances, some before and some after, but “Raging Bull,” recently released in a beautiful 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray, is the peak of one of the most notable acting careers in film history.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
After several collaborations with Martin Scorsese (“Mean Streets,” “Taxi Driver,” “New York New York”), the two would team on one of the most acclaimed films ever made. At the end of the ’80s, as lists of the best of the decade were being put together, “Raging Bull” regularly landed on the top. Thirty years later,...

The legendary film Raging Bull is finally available on Blu-ray, and to celebrate we are giving you a chance to win a copy! We contemplated putting you in the ring with some boxers… winner take all… but Apparently there are laws against that. So instead, how about a good old fashioned contest?

I’ll admit it: Mad Men’s season finale shocked me, even though everything was heavily foreshadowed (fiveshadowed?). I shouted “nooooo” at least a few times during the episode, but now that I’ve had some time to roll it around in my noggin, I think I loved that episode — and I’m down for a Megan-intensive season 5.
When Sally spilled the milkshake across the table, I tensed up as much as she and Bobby did: All of us had been conditioned to expect the worst. But Megan’s bright smile and casual ease represented a completely different mode of...

Standing in the kitchen of the empty home they once shared, Betty Francis admits to ex-husband Don Draper that in her new life, "things aren't perfect." She has finally left the house that was once the Draper residence, moving the children and husband Henry from Ossining to Rye, New York. But she knows the move -- just as her divorce from Don and marriage to Henry -- won't solve her problems. "So, you'll move again," Don says, a cool assertion, though not said cruelly, that does more to belittle Betty than calm her anxiety. He might as well be talking about himself. Don is the constant chameleon, the ever-changing everyman who picks up and moves on when so forced. He can always find a way around his problems by creating new ones instead, and the enigma of his character -- "Who is Don Draper?" is the question that opened Season...

As if the recent November titles weren’t enough, we now have some other films to add to our upcoming Criterion Collection wishlists.
The Criterion Collection will once again be curating the upcoming All Tomorrow’s Parties Film Screenings, in Monticello New York, this September. The event overall, will be curated by Criterion alum, Jim Jarmusch (Down by Law, Night on Earth, Stranger Than Paradise, Mystery Train). Earlier today, Atp & Criterion announced their line-up of films, and hidden among the list of epic titles that we already knew were going to be released, or are already available, were a few little verifications of rumors going around.
The line-up looks to be pretty amazing, and if I could afford the flight, I would surely head out for that weekend. Several of the new Bbs box set will be screening, as well as some other films that we’ve discussed on the...
