In the land of fantasy novels, it’s not uncommon for series to go on for seven, twelve, or fifteen books. Some of my favorite series have clocked in at ten books or more. George R. R. Martin’s “Song of Ice and Fire” books are planned to hit seven in order to catch up to where the television adaptation Game of Thrones ended; the “Wheel of Time” books by Robert Jordan, completed by Brandon Sanderson, reached an epic fourteen; and books sixteen and seventeen of Jim Butcher’s “Dresden Files” are due out this year.
When such length is the norm, it become even more impressive when authors can pack a solid punch with a trilogy. This year, three solid trilogies have already concluded, giving readers a chance to see how even a short series can really stick the landing when it comes to that final installment. Kameron Hurley...

The game Plague Inc. is getting a new mode that lets you save the world from a pandemic instead of destroy it.
“The game Plague Inc. is best known for letting you create a disease to wipe out humanity. But in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Plague Inc. will add a new game mode that’ll let you do the opposite and save the world from a deadly outbreak. The game’s developer Ndemic Creations is creating the new game mode on feedback from the World Health Organization and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations.”
Read more at PCMag.
The plots of Disney’s Frozen 2 and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil have a lot in common.
“Remember that Disney sequel last year where the sweet princess found out that her people had been involved in some light genocide of an indigenous race, but not to worry, her older magical guardian would save the day?...

The Dresden Files is headed to the small screen ... again. Deadline reports Fox21 Television Studios is developing a new TV show based on the books by Jim Butcher.

The time has come to summon another Dresden Files TV series. The fantasy-mystery series created by Jim Butcher previously hit the small screen in the form of a now-cancelled Sci-Fi Channel TV show. Consulting wizard Harry Dresden is headed back to TV: Fox21 Television Studios is developing author Jim Butcher’s contemporary fantasy novels The Dresden Files into a series, our sister site Deadline reports.
The books were previously adapted into a 2007 Syfy drama starring Paul Blackthorne (Arrow) as the titular private investigator/wizard, who takes on supernatural cases from human and nonhuman clients, in addition to consulting for the Chicago Pd’s Special Investigation unit. In the novels, Dresden faces off with a variety of creatures — magic, vampires, demons, spirits, faeries, werewolves and other monsters are real — while realizing that his cases...

In a competitive situation, Fox21 Television Studios has optioned the rights to The Dresden Files, the long-running New York Times bestselling series of contemporary fantasy novels written by Jim Butcher for series development.
The books follow private investigator and wizard Harry Dresden, as he recounts investigations into supernatural disturbances in modern-day Chicago. In the world of The Dresden Files, magic is real, along with vampires, demons, spirits, faeries, werewolves, outsiders, and other monsters. Harry Dresden works as the world’s only “consulting wizard”, accepting supernatural cases from both human and nonhuman clients, as well as the Chicago Pd’s Special Investigation unit. As the series progresses, Dresden takes on an increasingly important role in the supernatural world at large, as he works to protect the general public, making getting by as a working wizard and private investigator difficult for him. He finds himself facing off against an increasing variety of...

I am, as I have previously noted, a big fan of Jim Butcher’s long-running series about the modern-day wizard Harry Dresden, a.k.a. The Dresden Files. The stories and characters are great fun and the books just keep getting better, and more complex, and deeper overall. If you haven’t encountered the series before, I highly recommend it; and of course Wikipedia has a handy list of all of the books if you need to see where to start.
At Dragon Con in 2013, I sat down with Jim to hear more about book fifteen of the series, Skin Game. It was a delight talking with Jim and getting to learn the latest on a world I’ve grown to love. And now, fortunately, I’ve gotten to have that experience again – this time, at Dragon Con 2016 and with book sixteen, a.k.a. Peace Talks. Jim shared all...

Time flies, doesn’t it? It seems like just yesterday I was watching Animaniacs Live, interviewing folks about Turtles and cartoons, seeing the latest in geek fashions, hanging out with American Gods, and chatting with the Kings of Con at Sdcc, not to mention chillin’ at Nerd HQ. And now suddenly it’s September, and I’ve since attended both the UK Discworld Convention and Dragon Con! Convention season: it really never stops, does it?
Despite my busy schedule, I don’t want to miss sharing any of the fantastic adventures I’ve been having with you; so first, let’s rewind to San Diego and reminisce about the summer party-party-parties, because they are a staple of Sdcc and deserve to be featured. Every year, I try to line up at least a couple of parties each night, because, let’s be frank, I just love a good party. (I...

Jessica Jones is the next up in Marvel’s series of Netflix TV shows, and I am beyond excited for it. I was excited for Daredevil, I loved Daredevil, I am excited that there’s going to be more Daredevil; but if possible, I think I may be more excited to see Jessica Jones than I was even to see Vincent D’Onofrio playing the Kingpin. Why? I’ll tell you why.
Jessica Jones is an odd duck in the Marvel universe. When the story opens, she’s not a hero (anymore) and she’s not a villain. She’s tried the hero thing, and has now made the choice to walk away from it. She’s had a horrific traumatic experience, and is now trying to live life on her own terms. In fact, she’s pretty much the Harry Dresden of NYC (without the male gaze and other...

Last week Ichabod and Abbie raised a Diy Frankenstein’s monster, Jenny got arrested, War got his law degree and became Captain Irving’s attorney and Katrina got to hold the “idiot ball,” opting to stay a prisoner of Headless to glean information about his plot with Moloch. So the “Root of all Evil” should obviously be good intentions gone wrong, as proved over and over by our heroes, but it probably has something to do with money. Let’s find out! ******* We open with the Horseman of War carving a miniature woodwork of Terrytown Psychiatric because even harbingers of the End of Days need a hobby. The tiny Terrytown replica transforms into the real deal and we join Ichabod and Abbie already inside. They’re here to see Captain Irving but Henry has thrown a wrench into their plan. It turns out that in his haste to not receive electroshock therapy,...

Game Of Thrones has done for fantasy novels what Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man movie did for comic book films. Now the networks are racing to pick up a genre series to start adapting to the small screen in order to put up some kind of competition to the multi-Emmy award winning TV show.
The problem is which books will work on the small screen and which won’t? We all witnessed, with horror, the television adaptation of Jim Butcher’s much beloved Dresden Files series into an incredibly short lived TV series that only ran for a single season of twelve episodes.
Many pointed to the fact that it did not follow the books in any way, shape or form, an error that Game Of Thrones chose not to replicate (mostly.)
To answer the question ‘which show?’ we’ve looked through our bookcases and compiled a...

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a big fan of The Dresden Files, so it was awesome to get to sit down and chat with author Jim Butcher about the series while at Dragon Con last weekend!
The Dresden Files, as you may know, is a series about the wizard Harry Dresden, and follows his adventures and investigations into supernatural disturbances in modern-day Chicago, which he recounts through a first person narrative. It’s also, oh-by-the-way, a ton of fun, and weaves a lot of lore, myth, and legend from all cultures into modern adventure stories with a wizard who’s more gunfighter than Gandalf (even if he fights with a staff much of the time). As the series has progressed, it’s also gotten more complex and nuanced, with some great plot twists and character developments along the way. I definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn’t yet read it.

By the time you read this, I’ll be winging my way out of Atlanta and back home; but as I write, I am still in the thick of the exciting events of Dragon Con! I’ve had some great fun this weekend, and it’s not even over yet!
So, what the heck have I done this weekend? Seriously, guys, what did I do? It’s all kind of a blur. A really fun blur, mind you! But…let me think…
Oh yes! I interviewed Michael Rooker, Maurice Lamarche, Raphael Sbarge, Charlie Schlatter, and Jim Butcher, and checked in with John Dimaggio for more news on his awesome voice actor documentary (which I now have!) so look for those interviews and a documentary review coming your way soon!
I also had some experiences you can only have at Dragon Con—like looking over a food table with Richard Hatch...

For Christmas this year one of the books I got was The Dresden Files graphic novel, Welcome to the Jungle. By that point, I’d read all of the novels; but what got me into them was actually the TV show. When the show came out back in 2007, I remember hearing vaguely about it via a friend’s blog or two, but I never actually saw it. Thanks to the wonder of Netflix, though, a couple of years ago I discovered and watched it on streaming video, and enjoyed it enough to want to see more – but sadly, it only ran for one short season of 12 episodes. Thus I went back to acquire and read all of the books as well; and now, of course, I want more. The TV show adaptation wasn’t perfect, but it had a lot of positives, the first three being Paul Blackthorne as Harry,...

Spotify has confirmed that a web-based version of its music streaming service is undergoing testing. The Swedish company revealed that a beta version of its web player has been distributed to a small number of users, with a full roll-out scheduled for 2013. "We can confirm we've launched a beta version of a Spotify web player that we're testing with a small number of users," Spotify's Jim Butcher told TechRadar. "Potentially it's a great additional feature for times you can't play music through the desktop app, like at work or at (more)...

Blood Lite III: Aftertaste
The third book in the hilarious and horrifying national bestselling anthology series from the Horror Writers Association–a frightfest of sidesplitting stories from such “New York Times” bestselling authors as Jim Butcher, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Heather Graham, L.A. Banks, Kelley Armstrong, and many more
Horror fiction explores the dark side of human nature, often pushing the limits of violence, graphic gore, and extreme emotions. But with the popularity of shows and movies, such as “The Walking Dead,” “True Blood,” “Twilight,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” audiences have demonstrated their love for the genre–especially accompanied with a dose of humor to tone down the terror.
“Blood Lite III: Aftertaste” continues to put the fun back into dark fiction, featuring a wide range of humorous and highly entertaining horror-filled tales. Edited by Horror Writers Association founding member and award-winning author Kevin J. Anderson, the stories vary in tone...

Over on his twitter account, author Jim Butcher announced that he has completed Cold Days, the 14th novel in his popular Dresden Files series. He’s also, apparently a homemade fruit rollups connoisseur.
A release date for Cold Days has not yet been announced, but it shouldn’t be too long now. For longtime fans, things are really heating up in spite of Harry’s chilly position; the last novel, Ghost Story, ended with Dresden in the care of not one, but two, dangerously powerful entities who would use him for their own devices. One can only guess where the road will lead our hero next.
The Dresden Files follows the story of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden: Chicago’s first (and only) practicing wizard and private investigator. As a consultant Chicago P.D.’s Special Investigations Unit Dresden works to protect the citizens of Chicago from vampires, werewolves, ghouls, dark sorcerers,...

Fans of James Marsters and Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files, rejoice! Confirmed at this past weekend’s Dallas Comic Con, James Marsters will indeed return to lend his voice for the audio book for Cold Days, the next book of the Dresden series coming out in this fall.
Marsters had narrated the audio books for the entire fourteen-book-and-counting Dresden series except for the latest one, Ghost Story. A fan asked Marsters at the Q&A session why and this was his response:
“Sorry, sorry, guys. When they first called me, I was doing a piece for French television for the series called Metal Hurlant [Chronicles] which is the comic book that gave rise to Heavy Metal, a really cool movie in the 80’s. Really dark, kinda a modern Twilight Zone.
So I was in Brussels filming that so they said that they would reschedule and when they called back a...

Today author John Scalzi (Old Man’s War) confirmed that his latest novel, Redshirts, will get an audiobook edition, and announced the reader for the project is to be none other than Star Trek veteran, Wesley Crusher Wil Wheaton (The Guild, Eureka, The Big Bang Theory)!
Here is the official word from Whatever:
Yes, there will be an audiobook version of Redshirts;
And, yes, it will be read by Wil Wheaton.
Because, come on, people. Not only is Wil Wheaton a most excellent reader of my novels — we are together nominated for two Audie awards this year, for Fuzzy Nation and for Agent to the Stars — but it is a novel named Redshirts. If ever there were a no-brainer between book and reader, this is it.
I haven’t been this excited about an audiobook since James Marsters read for Jim Butcher‘s Dresden Files!

Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files: Fool Moon #4
Written by Jim Butcher and Mark Powers
Art by Chase Conley
Colors by Mohan
Letters by Bill Tortolini
Cover by Chase Conley
Dynamite Entertainment
Release Date: October 5, 2011
Cover Price: $3.99
Let me start by saying I love everything Jim Butcher has written. This was no exception. Obviously, the story was slimmed down and adapted to comic form but the source material is still there. Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files: Fool Moon #4 is all about Harry Dresden and Tera West finding MacFinn after his transformation into a loup garou (a very nasty type of lycanthrope). Of course, with Harry, nothing is ever simple.
A bit of confusion leads Tera to attempt to attack Harry. He, however, doesn't have time for it and decides to avoid the confrontation. Quickly realizing the police are looking for them, they decide to split up after finding MacFinn.

I’ve been writing stuff for a while so it’s hard to take me by surprise. I can often spot where a story is going; I’ve been known, when watching a movie or TV show, to not only predict the next plot twist but sometimes the next line of dialog. Those around me, aside from shushing me, sometimes ask me if I’ve seen this particular movie or episode before. The answer in these cases is “no” but based on what I know of plot and character, you can predict where the story has to go or what a person has to say to get it there, especially when the writer(s) are going by the numbers.
On the other hand, I’m delighted when the writer surprises me. It’s not a matter of willy-nilly just writing any old damn thing but advancing the plot or the...

Ghost Story
A Dresden Files Novel, Book 13
Hardcover | Kindle
Written by Jim Butcher
Roc Publishing
Release date: July 26, 2011
Ghost Story, book 13 of the Dresden Files was extraordinary. And that is saying something considering the fact that I have yet to read a book by Jim Butcher that wasn't great. But how often do you get to see the protagonist of a book as a ghost? I was really scared for Harry Dresden, what with the prior book having ended with him sinking into the water after being shot. That's not exactly a healthy prospect for Chicago's only practicing wizard detective.
Our story starts six months after the last book ends. Chicago has changed immensely during Harry's absence... and certainly not for the better. The supernatural creatures that once avoided the town have converged upon the Windy City after it became known that Dresden had disappeared. His friends have done their best to protect the citizens,...

Earlier this year, Borders Group Inc filed for bankruptcy. After a July 2011 deadline came and went without a buyer for the national book retailer, the company began liquidating its retail chain and closing up stores, with the last of them scheduled to shut down by the end of this month. When that happens, Borders will be no more.
Nearly a decade. That's how long I worked for the Borders Group Inc. I transitioned to one of the Waldenbooks from a larger multimedia/book company and it was quite a shock. Antiquated registers and outdated search systems were the norm. But one thing the company had was passion. Passion for books and authors. New employees were quizzed about their book knowledge and any interview turned into a discussion of favorite novels and writers. I loved it, really loved it. Every three or four months there was a conference with authors and publishers speaking,...

Second week of Dungeon Manual, a boring unrecommendable blog I’ve been working.
This week I talked about NPR’s Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy poll, discussing 5 books that really tug at me that I didn’t see in the top 100. I’ve received some feedback and surprised and relieved at the Caine love I’ve seen. Hope for badass fiction! On the otherhand, kind of shocked at people thinking Tim Powers, Jonathan Carroll, and Patricia McKillip are obscure. I’ll give you Stepan Chapman, but anyone who reads Sf/F should know who the first 3 are. A Science Fiction 5 is coming soon!
I shared my thoughts on Jim Butcher’s latest Dresden Files entry, Ghost Story. Look, I know going in fans are going to love everything, but I thought this was a letdown compared to the awesome that was Changes, his last effort. There were some positives though,...

Just a quick pointer to some low-budget and boring blogging I’m doing at Dungeon Manual. Kicked it off with three posts, one the first in a series of thoughts I had after reading Steven Erikson’s The Crippled God concluding chapter of his sweet “Malazan Book of the Fallen” cycle. It’s largely a several page review review that I’ve broken down into segments. I’m calling the whole thing Crippled God Shank, and kicked it off with Crippled God Shank – Kick the Cratchit.
I then hit the comic book angle, going with two of my favorite lines of all time in Defiant and Valiant. First, in Lapham’s lost Mongrel still Defiant, I examine a lost character from Eisner Award winning comic writer/artist David Lapham, taking a look at the promo lithograph he did for Defiant Comics of the character Mongrel, our first and perhaps last look at the character.

Believe it or not, I have been called a rebel. It’s happened more than once, and it’s come from multiple sources. The first time that I heard that, I was actually very surprised. When I hear the word “rebel,” it brings a certain set of images to mind, mainly revolving around leather jackets, motorcycles, tattoos, and loud Rock & Roll. Mostly, though, my first thought was “Me? Really?”
I associate a certain amount of hedonism with rebels, and, while I do know how to have fun, my moments that may equate to wanton acts of self-destruction largely involve riding my moped at full speed (because it’s essentially got two speeds, stop and wide-open, or at least it does when I drive it), or the time that I read the entire run of Dave Sim’s Cerebus in one sitting. “The Last Day” had just been released, and as...

In light of the news this week that all 5’7” of Tom Cruise would be playing the imposing 6’5” tall, near 250 pounds Jack Reacher in a series of films based on the Lee Child character that nearly caused a riot at WhatCulture! and with the recent release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, fans around the world are once again bring up a favorite post-movie discussion point: “It’s just not faithful to the book.”
Since I first heard the phrase as a child, I have always found something dubious about the statement. After all, film is film and books are books—the two are clearly different media, one visual, one written with the visuals as imagination. The real problem with making movies from written stories is not that film changes too much of the original story, but the imagination of readers somehow never finds absolute fulfillment when viewing a...

There’s just over a month before the release of Ghost Story, the next Harry Dresden novel, and this urban fantasy fan is chomping at the bit. Butcher must have heard fans scratching at the walls, because he’s released the first two chapters of Ghost Story for our preview pleasure.
Jim Butcher popped my urban fantasy cherry, and it was a magical experience (no pun intended…okay…maybe a little pun intended). Since our literary tryst, where he was both patient and gentle, Butcher opened up an awesome reality where fantasy meets the real world setting; now like a junkie I can’t get enough.
If you like fantasy or detective fiction, then The Dresden Files are something you should definitely read. But you shouldn’t start here. Go away, and pick up Storm Front…shoo.
For the rest of us, here are those two chapters.

If not for the glory of my Kindle, my "books to be read" pile would be stacked like a pyramid of Colon Blow beside my bed and smothering my poor fiancee and dog, instead of blipping in a smug number at the top of my indispensable electronic reader. (It's 141. And growing.) And I keep a little memo list on my phone every time a new book gets released that I am excited about. It's how I came to realize that the world might just end on October 18th, because there are four books coming out that day.
Anyway, since everyone is clearly already reading The Borrower, because I demanded it of you and because it's a lovely little book, I thought I would share six other books I'm awaiting with fevered anticipation. Because if you are a fantasy nerd like I, July is going to be your promised land.
