Following the recent votes by VFX workers at Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel to unionize with IATSE, a call for collective bargaining received enthusiastic applause during an intimate Visual Effects Society Honors ceremony and reception Friday at Los Angeles’ Skirball Cultural Center.
Referencing the SAG-AFTRA strike and recently ended WGA strike, honoree Bob Coleman, a veteran VFX artist agent and exec, said “a lot of damage has been done, but progress has been made for those two guilds. But the artists in this room and artists all around the world have not fared so well without collective bargaining. And without collective bargaining, there will be no progress for them.” He added, “I believe this is one of the greatest inequities in our industry, and I hope this inequity can be righted.”

Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” will close out AFI Fest on Oct. 29.
The film which screened at the Venice Film Festival to a 7-minute standing ovation follows the life of legendary stage composer Leonard Bernstein and his relationship with Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).
“’Mastro’ displays Bradley Cooper’s symphony of talent with the power of a cymbal crash,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO. “It is AFI’s honor to shine a light upon this extraordinary work of art on the festival’s Closing Night.”
Aside from directing and starring in the film, Cooper co-wrote the script with Josh Singer. The supporting cast includes Matt Bomer (as Bernstein’s lover), Maya Hawke (as Bernstein’s daughter Jamie) and Sarah Silverman (as Bernstein’s sister Shirley).

John Sturges’ orbital jeopardy thriller does everything right: the story is taken seriously, the actors seem committed and the special effects aren’t bad. Yet it’s more interesting for what doesn’t work than what does. As one of the first Sci-fi pictures in the wake of 2001 it wasn’t well received despite being technically astute. Did NASA’s race to the Moon put an end to fanciful space Sci-fi? Gregory Peck, Gene Hackman, Lee Grant and some ex- TV actors do their best, but producer Mike Frankovich’s space saga just sits there. It looks great in its first Blu-ray release: images of the actual Apollo 11 launch are breathtaking.

Title: Ptsd Director: Cedric Godin Starring: Jason Lopez, Treva Etienne, G Larry Butler, Phillipe Simon Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental state that can develop after a person is exposed to traumatic events. Most frequently this phenomenon is associated to soldiers who have survived wars and have come face-to-face with death and emphatically excruciating experiences. Director Cedric Godin’s feature debut captures this harrowing state through the exceptional performance of actor Jason Lopez. The portrays – with technical simplicity and Oscar-worthy acting – the story of Jason, a young military veteran who struggles to adjust to civilian life after returning from Iraq. Who's responsible for turning Cbgb's into the petri dish that unleashed punk rock onto the world?
It's long been known that the idea didn't originate with the club's owner, Hilly Kristal, who died in 2007, a year after the famously dingy venue closed its doors. He named the club Cbgb-Omfug, short for Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music For Uplifting Gourmandizers, and expected to feature those genres, not the noisy creations of a bunch of arty freaks.
A recent e-book by longtime tour manager Larry Butler gives Television singer and guitarist Tom Verlaine credit for making Cbgb's cool. Here's how music-industry veteran Bob Lefsetz paraphrased Butler's account yesterday in his popular newsletter, the Lefsetz Letter:
Hilly Kristal was an unwitting beneficiary of Tom Verlaine's inability to find anywhere to feature Television. Yup, Verlaine asked Hilly to play at Cbgb, a relatively dead bar, on a dead night,...

Conrad Veidt is Turner Classic Movies' "Summer Under the Stars" performer of the day. An international star since the 1920s, Veidt worked in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Hollywood — twice. [Conrad Veidt Movie Schedule.] In the late '20s, Veidt was the star of unusual Hollywood fare such as Paul Leni's The Man Who Laughs (1928), in the title role as a man with a grin-like scar where his mouth should be, and Paul Fejos' The Last Performance (1929), as a magician in love with pretty Mary Philbin — a Universal star who also happened to be Veidt's leading lady in The Man Who Laughs. With the arrival of talking pictures, Veidt returned to Germany, but with the ascent of the Nazis he fled first to England and later to the United States. In the Hollywood of the early '40s, Veidt became everybody's favorite Nazi in movies such as Nazi Agent, Escape, and Casablanca.

From cinema's inception, it split into two different camps: Those inspired by the Lumière brothers' "Employees Leaving The Lumière Factory," which was the original prototype for films that reflect or document real life, and those inspired by Georges Méliès' "A Trip To The Moon," which operates in the realm of pure escapism and artifice. There may be no greater example of the latter than Alexander Korda's awe-inspiring 1940 production of The Thief Of Bagdad, a Middle Eastern fantasia that springs from the screen like an illustrated storybook come to life. Sparing no expense, Korda hired top-flight artisans (including co-director Michael Powell, composer Miklós Rózsa, and cutting-edge effects man Lawrence Butler), constructed massive sets in London and Hollywood, and shot in a beautiful three-strip Technicolor. Treating cinema as a giant toy box, Korda resembles a child with an overactive imagination, giddily piling on every exotic and magical conceit the story can.
