Paramount Global ended 2022 with more than 77 million streaming subscribers, the company said; nearly 56 million of those came from Paramount+. That means the core streamer added 9.9 million subs in the final quarter of the year, a record.
Unfortunately, overall operating income plummeted 93 percent in the fourth quarter to just 182 million (down from 2.664 billion in Q4 2021). Wall Street forecast the company would report fourth-quarter earnings of 24 cents per share on 8.16 billion in revenue. Paramount posted adjusted earnings of 8 cents per share on 8.131 billion in revenue, missing both benchmarks. Without those adjustments, Paramount Global swung to a loss.
Streaming revenue rose 30 percent, but expenses increased 25 percent. Movies had a similar, but more favorable, trajectory: Revenue was up 35 percent, but expenses increased 22 percent. Both revenue and expenses decreased by single digits in linear television, where advertising sales saw the most significant decline.

SkyShowtime will complete its European roll-out this month with two remaining launches in Spain and Andorra, Variety can reveal.
The two markets, which will launch on Feb. 28, take SkyShowtime’s footprint to over 20 markets and completes its European configuration, allowing the platform to now focus on building out a premium content offering that will help it compete with Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ in Europe.
The service is also establishing itself amid a turbulent time for one of its namesake brands. Paramount Global revealed earlier this month that legacy brand Showtime will be renamed as “Paramount+ With Showtime” in a bid to integrate streaming service Paramount+ across both linear and streaming platforms. Showtime co-presidents Gary Levine and Jana Winograde are also exiting their current posts amid the shake-up at the pay-tv channel.

MTV Entertainment Studios and Showtime’s creative leadership teams are merging, with four more executives being laid off as the latter company’s upcoming consolidation with Paramount+ looms. Nina L. Diaz and Keith Cox will take on expanded roles as chief creative officer/president of content and president of scripted for Showtime/Mtves, respectively, reporting to Chris McCarthy.
News of the restructuring quickly follows McCarthy’s announcement earlier on Monday that Showtime co-presidents of entertainment Gary Levine and Jana Winograde’s roles would be eliminated; the former executive will take on a senior creative advisor role at the cable-streamer, while Winograde was let go as her position was consolidated. The shake-ups are a result of the larger ramifications of Showtime’s upcoming integration with Paramount+ later this year.

Chris McCarthy, the Paramount Global exec who was handed oversight of Showtime last year, is doubling down on his franchise plans for the premium cable network.
The exec who is credited with growing Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise for the streamer is expanding two of Showtime’s prized dramas — Dexter and Billions — with multiple offshoots in the works, sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Billions co-creators have been in business with an overall deal at Showtime since 2019 and the finance drama now ranks as the cabler’s longest-running scripted original series.

If you haven’t watched Dexter: New Blood, there will be spoilers. Eight years after Dexter concluded, Showtime brought the Michael C. Hall series back for Dexter: New Blood. “Belt tightening” is coming, according to Showtime Entertainment President Jana Winograde, who said studio bosses will need to find “creative ways” to deal with the global macroeconomic crisis.
According to Winograde, higher budget tentpoles will remain but “we will need to find creative ways” to fund lower budget shows that are “equally as compelling but may not have crashes, UFOs or big large-scale production sequences.”
“There will be belt tightening,” said Winograde, referring to the global cost-of-living crisis that will no doubt impact TV over the coming years. “Nobody wants to reduce the amount of content they are doing so hopefully people will find creative ways.”

The first in-person Television Critics Association press tour since January 2020 is set to take place in two weeks at the Langham Huntington hotel in Pasadena, California — but some major networks originally listed on the schedules shared with TCA members won’t be there.
Showtime, The CW, and Warner Bros. Discovery all dropped out of the TCA event, which typically takes place twice a year and spans several weeks. Showtime was set to present on July 29; now that date sits open, as does Warner Bros. Discovery’s date of August 9. National Geographic swooped in to replace The CW, which vacated July 31.
Dropouts are not unheard of, but vacating a TCA date usually means that the network swaps it for another one. So what gives? “Covid” would be the easy answer, but multiple sources tell IndieWire that while it remains a consideration it’s not the catalyst.

The Antler Queen's reign of terror has yielded some good news: "Yellowjackets" received seven nominations for the 2022 Emmy Awards, which were announced on July 12. The Showtime series - which follows the aftermath of a plane crash carrying a high school girls' soccer team as it unfolds and into the future - was nominated for outstanding drama series and outstanding casting in a drama series and earning acting nominations for Melanie Lynskey and Christina Ricci.
The new series premiered just last year and features a cast that includes acting veterans like Lynskey, Ricci, and Juliette Lewis. The three portray the older versions of plane-crash survivors Shauna (Sophie Nélisse), Misty (Samantha Hanratty), and Natalie (Sophie Thatcher), respectively.
Fans of the show are clamoring for any details they can get about season two, which the series' showrunners, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, teased in a recent interview with Variety. "We are definitely re-visiting the winter storyline,...

The case will be closing on Your Honor, it has been revealed.
Series star Bryan Cranston confirmed the news that the hit Showtime drama will conclude with its forthcoming second season.
“I am [currently] preparing for the second and last season of Your Honor, which is a limited series that I did for Showtime,” Cranston shared on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.
“As they tell me, it got higher ratings than any other series they’ve ever had — and so, one more season of that.”
The news is a little bit surprising, especially when you consider the success of the freshman run.
Then again, the series was initially conceived as a one-season limited series, but Showtime announced a renewal almost a year ago.

Showtime has ordered a half-hour scripted comedy pilot from Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody.
“Seasoned” is inspired by the couple’s real life and relationship. It follows the delightfully tumultuous relationship and life of a successful, gregarious, deeply committed, slightly insane married couple played by the married actors – roles they’ve been rehearsing for the last 43 years. The source of their unending magic is the same as their unending woe: that they’ve stayed together all this time.
The pilot is co-created and co-written by writer-director Ewen Wright and their son Gideon Grody-Patinkin.

“….the door’s always open to David Lynch, whether that would lead to another season, I don’t know if he wants to do it,” Showtime programming president Gary Levine said this summer about the possibility of more “Twin Peaks.” The return of the cult series this summer echoed the pop culture phenomenon it created in the ’90s, and with David Lynch behind the camera for all the episodes, every enigmatic, gorgeously strange frame had his singular vision.

The highly popular series Twin Peaks made its return to television this year, more than 27 years after its previous run. Now that the 18-episode follow up season is approaching the finale on Showtime many are wondering if there will be another season. Well, Showtime's president and CEO David Nevins revealed to Deadline Hollywood what the future of David Lynch's series holds:
“It was always intended to be one season. A lot of people are speculating but there’s been zero contemplation, zero discussions other than fans asking me about it.”
Showtime programming president Gary Levine, who was also ABC's executive on the original Twin Peaks series said:
“The door’s always open to David Lynch, whether that would lead to another season, I don’t know if he wants to do it. This was a Herculean effort. I’m not sure if any director has ever done 18 hours in a row of a series…...

David Lynch has finally addressed the prospect of making a fourth season of Twin Peaks...
It seems unlikely that many of the mysteries running through Twin Peaks, in both the original seasons and the latest one, will ever be solved. Some fans have made peace with that - and indeed did before David Lynch's relentlessly weird cherry-pie-and-coffee saga even started up again - but others are decidedly more intrigued to know if the show will return now that season 3 is over.

Director Lynch has finally broken his silence over the possibility. In a (perhaps badly) translated series of comments he made via video link to the Belgrade Culture Centre in Serbia, he addressed whether a fourth season might be on the cards after all.

Now that Netflix is canceling shows, rival executives are more than happy to welcome them back down to earth.
Netflix made waves recently when CEO Reed Hastings admitted that the streaming service needed to strike a balance with its lineup and start trimming some underperforming shows from its roster. Soon after, it cut “Sense8” and “The Get Down.”
“I’m glad they’re canceling shows,” FX original programming president Nick Grad said Friday at the Atx Television Festival. “They have to start making decisions. They can’t have 10,000 shows on! Showtime president David Nevins took the stage at the TCA Press Tour today to share some wonderful news.
Not only did he have word of a renewal of a slow-burn fan favorite, but of the return of a long-overdue revival, too.
His first order of business was about Twin Peaks.
Turns out the highly anticipated return didn't quite make it for a 2016 run, but now we know when to expect it!
It will premiere with a two-hour installment on May 25.
“It’s really happening,” Nevins exclaimed.
There will be a total of 18 episodes in the limited-series, and no plans for a second season.
What they have to say is wrapped up in this one season, but if there's one thing I've learned, never isn't a word in Hollywood's vocabulary.

Showtime is bracing for the “Twin Peaks” effect.

Showtime is expected to see its over-the-top service explode that day, given that episodes 3 and 4 will be available on the service the same day as the show’s two-hour linear premiere. Beyond that, the show will roll out in a traditional weekly fashion.

At the latest TCA — a very long procession of television executives telling critics why their new sitcom is going to be a really big deal, don’t you know — Showtime’s President and CEO, David Nevins, was joined by Gary Levine, the network’s President of Programming, to share a bit about what’s almost certainly their most-anticipated project. (Fessing-up time: we’ve transformed ourselves into a Ray Donovan blog.) It isn’t that a whole lot of new tidbits were released (thanks to /Film), but that what little got out is wholly revealing — and, I think, reassuring — about David Lynch‘s approach to the mammoth project.
About the whole “mammoth” thing: it was said that Twin Peaks‘ episode count — often reported as 18, being that the final result is supposed to come to about 18 hours in length — “continues to evolve through the filming and editing process,” into which the director has reportedly steeped himself fully.

“Twin Peaks,” even in revival form, continues to be one of the most enigmatic series on TV, whenever it makes it to air.
At the Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday, reporters expected to get some news, be it new footage, a release date, hell, even some damn good coffee or pie. Unfortunately, Showtime execs could only give crumbs about the state of production. “You can do a show like ‘Twin Peaks,’ where we don’t even know for sure how many episodes there will be,” Showtime President and CEO David Nevins half-joked, half-announced, as critics sobbed inside. A touted clip reel shown at TCA did not include any actual footage, only actors on set raving about how wonderful the show is.

Hey, "Shameless" peeps. It is with great pleasure that we can officially tell you that Showtime did, indeed, give your favorite show the greenlight to come back with a brand new season 7, which means we'll see more crazy antics from Frank, Carl ,Lip,Fiona and more. You'll also be served up new spoilers, photos, videos and all that great stuff in the coming weeks and months. Showtime actually renewed the show back on January 12th, 2016, right around the time season 6 debut, so they definitely knew they wanted this show back without a shadow of a doubt. We also got a pleasant statement about the show from the President of Showtime's programming, Gary Levine. He stated: "Shameless has clearly resonated with audiences as evidenced by their steady growth on Sunday nights over the past six years.

No one just dies anymore. Is that a good thing? Rupert Friend's Peter Quinn is a hugely popular character on "Homeland," but the Season 5 finale definitely hinted -- heavily -- to his death. He even had a powerful farewell letter to Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes).
But not so fast, 'cause Showtime executives just confused us further with comments that hint to Quinn's story perhaps continuing into Season 6.
At the Television Critics Association winter press event, Showtime President and CEO David Nevins said "Homeland" Season 6 will be both set and shot in New York City. TV Guide noted that neither Nevins nor Showtime President of Programming Gary Levine would confirm whether Quinn was dead or alive, but Levine offered this tease:
"In terms of reality, Quinn is severely damaged. There's no question about it. The life-or-death question remains, but if he should live, it will not be in any way...

(Warning: Minor spoiler follows if you haven't finished Homeland season five.) Homeland will use New York as next season's setting, according to reports from TCA. Showtime execs made the announcement Tuesday without revealing much in the way of story lines, but definitely gushing about how "exciting [it is] to see how [the writers] bring it back to the U.S. and reinvent it again," and also noting that the series' end is not imminent. The closest thing to a teaser came in the form of a cryptic update on Quinn, who was not having a good time at the end of last season. "Quinn is very damaged, no question about that," the network's president of programming, Gary Levine, said, according to Deadline. "If he should live, he won’t be in the shape and form he was." Other quotes ("Homeland is a show that killed a lead," thank you very much) seemed...

After a strong season 6 opener, which managed to both please critics and act as the series’ bigger premiere ever, Showtime has gone ahead and renewed Shameless for a 12-episode seventh season.
“Shameless has clearly resonated with audiences as evidenced by their steady growth on Sunday nights over the past 6 years,” said Showtime president of programming Gary Levine.
Given how well the series has been doing for Showtime over the years, news of a seventh season shouldn’t really come as too much of a surprise to fans. Most people can probably agree that there’s still a lot of story to tell in regards to the Gallagher family and the prospect of spending more time with these beloved characters is certainly something that excites us.
In fact, in her review earlier this week, our very own Samantha White concluded the following about the show:

Homeland is coming home, it seems. At TCA this week, Showtime’s David Nevins revealed that the sixth season will be shot, and set in New York and the surrounding area.
“It will be set domestically, primarily in the New York area,” Nevins said.
“We are in awe how (showrunner) Alex Gansa and his writers reinvent Homeland every season. It’s exciting to see how they bring it back to the U.S. and reinvent it again,” added Gary Levine, Showtime’s President of Programming.
After a fairly successful fifth outing, all eyes are on Showtime’s hit series to see what the writers can deliver for season six. Unfortunately, Nevins wouldn’t say too much about what to expect, but he did comment briefly on the fate of one Peter Quinn:
“Quinn is very damaged, no question about that,” Levine said. “If he should live, he won’t...
