It was 2004 and Martin Clunes was ready for a change. As the star of riotous Nineties sitcom Men Behaving Badly, he was still widely regarded as the face of floppy-fringed, shirt-hanging-out lad culture. But Clunes was eager to show a different side: to prove he could do serious as well as frothy. At which point Dr Martin Ellingham, an emotionally repressed small-town Gp with a tight smile and a big heart, walked into his life. Doc Martin had entered the building.
“It was a leap,” Clunes would reflect of the character he has portrayed for the past 18 years and to whom he says farewell with a Christmas special on ITV tonight (the series proper having wrapped in October). “I need something to act, someone to act, or something to pin someone on, rather than just open a script and a nice guy says some kind of nice things.”

“A Monster Calls” offers a child’s-eye view of cancer. Patrick Ness’ children’s novel, the winner of the 2012 Carnegie Medal and adapted into a 2016 film that starred Felicity Jones, sits with a 13-year-old boy trying to make sense of the disease laying waste to his mother — a disease that rarely, if ever, makes sense. Visited nightly by a storytelling monster, he slowly comes to appreciate that life isn’t a fairytale; it follows no plot. It’s a story about complexity that’s staged, in Sally Cookson’s Old Vic production, with the utmost simplicity.
That is, in the end, its great strength: it allows a sentimental story to cut through with sincerity. For a long while, however, it merely looks slimline: a stock gallery of school bullies, sleepless nights and scary monsters that speak in deep, echoing booms. Childhood, at first, seems the stuff of cliché: all messy bedrooms and deskbound daydreams.

They met as drama students in 1974 and became fast friends. Actor Selina Cadell remembers their adventures, from partying in Chelsea to late-night calls about boys
‘Carrie Fisher taught me to be my own hero’: readers’ tributes to the late star
It must have been about this time of year in 1974 when I walked into the girl’s changing room at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, and was met with the sight of a sobbing girl in a crumpled heap on the floor. I recognised her as a first year ( I was in the third) and had a vague idea that she was “that American girl”. My overwhelming memory is of her shuddering little shoulders and the huge tears that rolled from her pretty brown eyes as she turned towards this stranger who had put an arm around her and pulled her up from the floor.

'What is Sigourney Weaver doing on Doc Martin?' It's a good question, and one Twitter didn't seem to be able to answer last night as the Alien star appeared in the Cornwall-set comedy drama.
The man to thank for the almost unbelievable cameo is - wait for it - Jonathan Ross. No, really. Here's star Martin Clunes himself explaining all in a recent appearance on Wossy's chat show:
"I came on here to plug [ITV drama mini-series] Arthur and George and Sigourney Weaver was here, who I'd never met.
"She said, 'Oh I've watched every episode of Doc Martin...'
"It turns out, she is best friends with [Clunes' Doc Martin co-star] Selina Cadell - they were students together - who plays Mrs Tishell, our chemist and so that's why she'd been watching."
Playing an American tourist visiting Martin's Cornish town, Weaver jumped at the chance of a small role.
Twitter users, however, just jumped of their skins.

Taking on a Hitchcock title borders on cinematic heresy for many. Yet the new version of "The Lady Vanishes" is not trying to remake the master's 1938 version.
Airing Sunday on PBS (check local listings), "The Lady Vanishes: Masterpiece Mystery!" hews closer to the novel than the film, but the basic story is the same. It's a film shot rich with ambers and shadows, perfect for a mystery.
The story unfolds in 1931 on a train traveling from the Balkans and revolves around an independent, wealthy young British woman, Iris (Tuppence Middleton, "Inspector Lewis").
"When you first meet her, she is not a particularly likable person," Middleton tells Zap2it. "Taking this character, who was actually quite spoiled and privileged, and making her into this likable character" was her aim.
It's already been a rough day for Iris -- and a somewhat confusing one for the audience. Iris bribes the ticket...
