For us 90s kids, Dick Tracy was an interesting monster of a movie. It seemed to take a lot of cues from Tim Burton’s Batman, which was released the previous summer, but it definitely had a distinct voice of its own. Dick Tracy was another classic pulp adaptation of an urban enforcer that had very dynamic visuals and an over-the-top rogues gallery. It even sported a score by Danny Elfman, which would have his signature atmospheric sound. The movie would introduce a generation of young audiences to the 1930’s film noir/ detective movie genre. Additionally, the movie brought back Warren Beatty after a three-year absence when his last film, 1987’s Ishtar, was a big flop. Having a star like Beatty in a big-budget franchise like this was an enormous asset for the re-budding intellectual property. And the star power wouldn’t even stop there.

Warner Bros. Pictures dropped the official red band trailer for the film “House Party,” a raunchy, genre-bending comedy adventure co-produced by basketball legend LeBron James.
Starring actors Jacob Latimore and Tosin Cole, the trailer gives glimpses at some of the hilarity and mayhem to come in the upcoming release, including a scene where the duo find themselves in James’ house, talking to a hologram the athlete created to shower him in words of affirmation.
“He got a hologram of himself, just to give him compliments?” Latimore quips in the trailer.
The feature is a remake of a 1990 comedy by the same title, though the plot has been adapted for a new, modern audience. As opposed to the two leads being high-schoolers in search of a fun night, Latimore and Cole play two aspiring club promoters who decide to host a massive party to distract from their financial troubles after being...

As DC and WB attempt to squeeze as many Joker movies out of the Clown Prince of Crime as humanly possible, let’s take a stroll down memory lane courtesy of IGN, in association with Academy Award-winning Makeup Artist, John Caglione Jr., and relive the iconic performance given by Heath Ledger as the titular jester in Christopher Nolan’s venerable comic book film, The Dark Knight.
To celebrate the pic’s 10th anniversary – which Warner Bros. has decided to commemorate by re-releasing the film in IMAX on August 24th – IGN spoke with Caglione Jr., who received an Oscar nomination for his work on the motion picture, and juxtaposed the conversation alongside Bts footage and snippets of the theatrical cut to comprise a genuinely compelling look at how Heath Ledger’s Joker was brought into existence.

In HBO’s “Paterno,” director Barry Levinson tells the story of the Penn State pedophile scandal — in which assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with a pattern of child molestation that stretched over 15 years — and its effect on Joe Paterno, the winningest head football coach in Ncaa history. It was the job of makeup artist John Caglione Jr. and hairstylist Trish Almeida, first-time collaborators, to transform iconic actor Al Pacino into the bespectacled mentor whose legacy was called into question by events that rocked the region and shocked the nation.
Caglione has been working with Pacino since the 1990 film “Dick Tracy,” for which he won the Oscar for makeup. For “Paterno,” he studied the coach’s look and included a process that made the actor feel comfortable. “With Al, he likes to try on different noses. Made at the height of the creature feature resurgence popularized by films like The Howling, An American Werewolf in London, Wolfen, Humanoids from the Deep, and The Boogens, C.H.U.D. (1984) was a (very) low budget film that was briefly popular upon its release and became a staple of the mid-80’s video stores that seemed to pop up like weeds around that time. We tend to throw around terms like “cult classic” a little too lightly nowadays. I don’t think C.H.U.D. qualifies as a genuine “cult classic,” but the film certainly has legs over three decades plus since its original release.
Perhaps those “legs” have something to do with the coverage from the popular Fangoria magazine during production of the film. Or maybe it had to do with the schlocky but nonetheless horrific rubber monster suits worn for the CHUDs (actually foam latex) to go along...

Full disclosure: The Amityville Horror films do not make up my favorite franchise. And it has nothing to do with the central “haunted house” premise, but rather the execution of the series thus far, from the serviceable ground zero template, The Amityville Horror (1979) through the (as yet unseen) upcoming Amityville: The Awakening, with some stops in between at DTVville (not to mention the Ryan Reynolds remake; but I said not to mention, so not mention I shall). The name is so shopworn now that “Amityville” has become synonymous with “poopy”.
But, but, But…let’s rewind to a time when a follow up to the kind-of goofy James Brolin (and his glorious perm) starrer was actually anticipated. That film was a smash success at the box office, and the powers that be wanted to revisit the village of Amityville to see what other demons they could find in the basement.

There was never really a need to sequelize 1982’s Poltergeist. It told a complete story. It vanquished the evil spirit haunting the house by film’s end. Heck, it even vanquished the house itself. But because the original movie was a hit and it was the ’80s, the Tobe Hooper/Steven Spielberg collaboration got not just one sequel but two, despite the fact that it does not lend itself to being a franchise. New villains and new mythology—and eventually even new family members—were introduced to keep the story going, albeit with mixed results. And while the sequels have their fans, they’re hardly among the most beloved horror films of the decade. Thanks to Scream Factory’s new Collector's Editions of both, horror fans now have the chance to reevaluate them in the best possible format.

In the summer of 1990, Warren Beatty’s labor-of-love, Dick Tracy, became a surprise commercial hit, earned acclaim for its visuals and technical artistry, and went on to win a number of high-profile awards. Its cast was bursting with stars and beloved character actors. So why, 25 years on, does it feel so forgotten?
Certainly, director-producer-star Beatty created a visual masterpiece and proved that “style over substance” isn’t always a bad thing. The design team was limited to the seven colors available to comic strip creator Chester Gould, and the movie reproduces that vivid look as faithfully as any live-action film could. From the spectacular flight across the twilit city that appears under the opening credits, it’s clear that Dick Tracy is something different.

Long before the comic book boom of the 21st Century, Hollywood's handling of heroes drawn from the funny pages was a touch and go enterprise. More at home in the serials era of the 40s and 50s, that iconography leaked out onto the big screen in only drips and drabs, a "Superman" here, a "Batman" there. And indeed, a year after Tim Burton brought the latter to unique Gothic heights in 1989, Warren Beatty brought another flesh and blood crime fighter to the big screen with bold expressionistic strokes. Today, "Dick Tracy" stands out as a hand-crafted wonder. Beatty's team was jammed with talent, and it needed to be, for this was an exercise in placing the viewer in a world only slightly familiar. Its extremes — and there were many — were a direct extension of design techniques and flourishes. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography,...

An interesting connection between Tim Burton's Batman and Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight has just come to light as the folks at the newly refurbished Tate Britain sent me some videos featuring directors such as Nolan, Mike Leigh and Ken Loach talking about how certain artists inspired their work. To begin, for Nolan he focuses on the work of Francis Bacon, revealing how he couldn't find the right words to describe the look he wanted for the smeared clown make-up on Heath Ledger's Joker so he turned to a book of Bacon's art to relay his vision to Ledger's make-up artist, John Caglione Jr.. While it's always interesting to see a filmmaker's inspiration, what's even more interesting about this, to me, is the connection it draws between Nolan's Joker and Jack Nicholson's turn as the Joker in Burton's 1989 film. Just below is the Tate Britain short with Nolan,...

If you’ve ever wondered how Heath Ledger’s Joker came by that tortured visage of his, the newly refurbished Tate Britain is the place to go. The venerable gallery has launched three short YouTube films linking film and art. This one sees Christopher Nolan pull the thread from the Joker back to his inspiration, Francis Bacon, a mainstay at the Pimlico picture palace. Click below to hear Nolan’s thoughts on the great artist and his influence on Heath Ledger and Dark Knight makeup artist John Caglione’s work. Interestingly, the director also takes the chance to reiterate his fidelity to celluloid, drawing parallels between the analogue image and the handmade quality of Bacon’s work. “It’s inherently a little sterile”, Nolan says of the digital image. “There’s a little bit more of a barrier between what you’re trying to do and reaching an audience”. After posting my article, "Nsfw: 15 Sexiest Comic Book Movie Scenes Ever," I all of sudden had a renewed interest in 1990's Dick Tracy. After doing a little bit of research, I came across the official website for Hollywood makeup artist, John Caglione Jr.. He worked on the film, and his collaborations with Al Pacino went so swimmingly that Caglione became Al's personal makeup artist for all of his following films. Anyway, on John's website, he had images of Al Pacino trying on some different prosthetics and makeup combinations. Al Pacino actually designed Big Boy Caprice's make-up himself and completely re-imagined the character, who was originally big and fat in the comics with a little nose. Caprice's resulting film counterpart is of average height with enlarged hands, nose, and cheekbones, hence his street name. - IMDb Legendary police detective Dick Tracy is the only man tough enough to take on gangster...

Today, comic book fans may recall Warren Beatty’s adaptation of Dick Tracy as a memorable misfire. When it was released in 1990, it was met with, at best, mixed reviews and while it performed respectably at the box office, missed Walt Disney’s estimates so the hoped for franchise was stillborn. Blame could be squarely placed at Beatty’s feet since he had a strangle hold on the film as its director, producer, and star. It got so crazy that poor Kyle Baker had to use only three approved head shots for the 64-page comics adaptation, which stretched even his considerable skills.
We have a great opportunity to reconsider this film now that Disney is releasing it tomorrow on Blu-ray. One of the things about the production is that Beatty wanted to recreate Chester Gould’s strip as faithfully as possible, which meant he limited the color palette to a mere seven colors,...

Here's a collection of never before seen photos of Heath Ledger as the Joker on the set of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. The images come from make-up artist John Caglione Jr. One of the photos (pictured above) comes from the last day Ledger was on the set.
I don't think Ledger's Joker will ever be topped. What he did with this iconic villain was incredible, and as you know, it won him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He took this character to a terrifying level of insanity.
Check out the behind the scenes images below and tell us what you think. I'm sure that one day we'll see the Joker up on the big screen again being played by another actor. If that does happen, who do you think could actually pull it off? Do you think that there's an actor that could do a better job?...

Make-up artist John Caglione Jr., the man behind the stunning Joker makeup worn by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, has posted some never before seen pictures of the late actor both on set and in the makeup-room while the film was in production.

The Dark Knight make-up artist John Caglione Jr. has uploaded on this website some never before seen photos of Heath Ledger as The Joker on the set of the Batman movie. These behind-the-scenes glimpses actually include one photograph from Ledger’s last day on The Dark Knight set.
I love these little windows into what it must have been like on the set of this movie, crafting this masterpiece for the masses that has become one of the most popular films of all time. Ledger would of course go on to give his greatest ever performance in The Dark Knight before he was taken away from us too young and its sad to consider what performances we may have seen from him by now if he had lived.
John Caglione Jr’s great work was also recognised with an Academy Award nomination.

Meryl Streep, J. Roy Helland Meryl Streep kisses "her other partner," makeup artist J. Roy Helland, at the 2012 Academy Awards. Helland has been working Streep since Alan J. Pakula's Sophie's Choice, the movie that earned her her first Best Actress Oscar. After thanking her husband in her acceptance speech, Streep then expressed her joy that "her other partner" Helland had finally received Academy Award recognition. (Photo: Todd Wawrychuk / ©A.M.P.A.S.) Helland shared with Mark Coulier the Academy Award for Best Makeup for their work on Phyllida Lloyd's The Iron Lady, on which they transformed Streep into former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. For her portrayal as Thatcher, Streep won her third Oscar — the first, as Best Supporting Actress, was for her divorced mother in Robert Benton's Kramer vs. Kramer. Helland, Coulier, and Streep also won the British Academy of Film Awards for their efforts.

Our second stab at the Oscars contains make-up effects and score (read part 1 here). The make-up effects, followed by the visual effects and technical awards, remain my favorite parts of the show; here you got to see your heroes: Rick Baker, Howard Berger, Chris Walas or Rob Bottin in the audience. Even the great Stan Winston could have been out there, back in the day. Though best known for his “visual effects” wins—he brought home an Oscar for best make-up in 1991 for Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Here genre fans can rejoice, Greg Cannom brought home the gold, again, for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Cannom, a genre elder, worked alongside (just to name a few) Fincher, Coppola, Landis, Dante, Blatty, and Cohen creating all sorts of character and creature make-ups.

Okay, so another year and now it's the final show of the awards season. I don't know why but I'm not that enthuastic about the Oscars this year. Maybe it was last year's underwhelming show or maybe it's because The Dark Knight isn't nominated this year, probably both, but never-the-less the show is done and I want to put up the post of how the show went. Time for the ultimate post-oscar show breakdown...

Best Motion Picture Of The Year
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (Paramount and Warner Bros.)
"Frost/Nixon" (Universal)
"Milk" (Focus Features)
"The Reader" (The Weinstein Company)
Winner: "Slumdog Millionaire" (Fox Searchlight)
Best Picture was a major disappointment. Less said about The Dark Knight - the better. For me, Milk is the most deserving of best picture this year. It's issues are more relevant and more original than all films on the list this year.

Click here for the 2009 Academy Award winners! This year I opted not to break down every category and discuss the merits of each individual nominee. Mostly because it takes a ridiculous amount of time, but also because there doesn’t seem to be as much excitement as in previous years. Maybe it’s the fact that the populist picks of the year (Dark Knight, for example) were snubbed in the major categories and replaced with little seen films like The Reader. Or maybe because many of the categories are foregone conclusions.
Either way, I wanted to post my favorites/predictions and hopefully get some discussion going on what you think will win and why. I’m posting my picks here, but included the full list of nominations below.
Best Picture
Slumdog Millionaire - It’s clearly the favorite going into the ballot counting having swept every major awards ceremony leading up to the Oscars.

On Thursday morning, January 22, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have unveiled to the world their selection of nominees for the 81st Annual Academy Awards. Announced by Academy president Sid Ganis and Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, the nominations were dominated by "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".
Having been shunned away from any kudos at the 66th Golden Globe Awards, the David Fincher's drama has picked up 13 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress for Taraji P. The movie about a man born in his eighties has landed a Best Original Score nomination for composer Alexandre Desplat, and received seven gongs for technical categories as well.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected the nominations for the 81st Annual Academy Awards ceremony, airing live on ABC February 22, 2009. The awards will be handed out at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California.
Hugh Jackman has been hired to host the Oscars, the first time for the Australian actor, but more importantly the first time since 1989 a comedian hasn’t hosted. The producers (Laurence Mark and Bill Condon) have also made formal statements saying they do not plan to announce the presenters for the awards, hoping the surprise will drive viewership.
The telecast last year was the least watched in the 30-year history of the rating system. The industry had hoped a “Best Picture” nomination for The Dark Knight or Wall-e would help bridge the gap between popular, massive movies and lesser seen art house films. The nominations for the 81st Annual Academy Awards were announced this morning, and Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army was among the films honored. It’s up for Best Makeup, with Spectral Motion topper Mike Elizalde and Thom Floutz specifically cited.
The duo are up against The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button’s Greg Cannom and The Dark Knight’s John Caglione Jr. and Conor O’Sullivan for the Makeup Oscar. Hellboy II also made it to the “bakeoff” in the Visual Effects category, but Button, Dark Knight and Iron Man wound up nominated there. Del Toro’s Pan’S Labyrinth took the Makeup prize in 2007; we’ll see if his latest epic brings home another on Sunday, February 22, when the Oscars are broadcast on ABC at 8 p.m. Est/5 p.m. Pst. Congratulations and good luck, boys!
