Psychomania tells of a group of n’er-do-well teens, led by a rich and mean-spirited young man, who skip school, ride motorcycles, and cause trouble and general panic wherever they go. They dub themselves The Living Dead and enjoy causing death and chaos at nearly every turn. However, if things seem bad in the little English village in which they reside, they take a decided turn for the worse when Tom Latham (Nicky Henson) discovers his psychic mother and the mysterious butler Shadwell (George Sanders) harbor a shocking secret—the key to life after death.
It seems that Mrs. Latham (Beryl Reid) and her husband made a long-ago deal with the devil for immortality. The couple committed suicide only to come back from the dead. Unfortunately, the late Mr. Latham found out he wasn’t a true believer and never made it back across. But Mrs.

Today’s filmgoers say they want more cerebral science fiction films, and some moviemakers make an effort to comply. This year’s Arrival is quite ambitious, and last year’s Ex Machina is as good as any sci-fi movie since 2001.
But back in the 1950s producers quickly discovered that the audience wanted little more than monsters and mounting disaster in their sci-fi. Although some wonderful work snuck through, killer robots and alien invaders became the norm. From the 1970s forward, even with Stanley Kubrick aboard,...

“Have you ever heard a frog scream?”, the tag-line to George McCowan’s 1972 ecological horror Frogs (out now on Arrow Blu-ray) should have read. The Death Wheelers are coming to the UK! Well, they are coming to Blu-ray / DVD in the UK, anyway. Don Sharp’s PsychoMania aka The Death Wheelers (1973) follows Tom, a motorcycle gang leader, who kills himself and is successfully resurrected from the dead by his mother and a very knowledgeable cult. Psychomania will be released via the British Film Institute (BFI) on Blu-ray / DVD in the UK on September 19th:
From Blu-ray.com: “Look Out! The Living Dead motorcycle gang is on the rampage, wreaking havoc in their small English town. For gang leader Tom (Nicky Henson), however, mere earthly violence is not enough: he’s obsessed with the occult and is convinced that he can kill himself and then return from the dead – with the help of a frog-worshipping cult and his seance-conducting mother (Beryl Reid). Remarkably, Tom succeeds and soon joins the ranks of the walking – and riding – dead!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Directed by Gayle Stahlhuth
East Lynne Theater Company
Cape May, New Jersey
Through August 31, 2013
Washington Irving's venerable ghost story, first published in 1820, contains virtually no dialog, but abundant pondered ambiguities -- so it is up to the writer and director who is adapting the story in a performance medium to "dramatize" it. Many a writer has tried, in film, animation, stage, and musical versions. Playwright James Rana has taken up the challenge and provided the freshest of takes on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in a delightful production mounted by East Lynne Theater Company in picturesque Cape May, New Jersey. Deftly directed by Gayle Stahlhuth, the company's artistic director, and with a talented cast of seasoned professionals, the hour and twenty minute presentation breezes by on the wings of disarming charm and dramatic authenticity.
The story (for those pupils who avoided "required reading") is simple.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet's Titanic is back in action. The 3D release of John Cameron's 1997 blockbuster got off to an impressive start at the domestic box office Wednesday and is projected to gross $4.5 million to $6 million for the day. That would be good enough for a possible five-day opening of $27 million to $30 million. Titanic could even beat The Hunger Games on Wednesday; they were running neck and neck in the late afternoon, though traffic for Titanic slowed by the evening, giving Hunger Games the edge. Paramount and Fox are partners on Titanic;

While the reviews for Beginners were almost all positive, very few people have had a chance to see the film. I myself watch over 100 new releases each year and it still took me a few months to catch up on the movie. I finally got around to seeing Beginners this week and called it the most overlooked film of 2011. I guess I can no longer say this. Last night, the Gotham Independent Film Awards surprised everyone with a tie for Best Feature Film with Mike Mills‘ Beginners and Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life taking the top prize. Who would have ever guessed?
Best Feature winners from the past several years include Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, and The Hurt Locker. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Melanie Laurent is the latest (well-paid) victim of perfume advertising. It's amazing how powerful (translation: $$$) the mere suggestion of celebrity sexuality or nudity can be. But we don't care how sparkly they these commercials may be; they are all wasted opportunities, and A-list directors often share the blame. The only one with an ounce of creativity is Jean-Jacques Annaud's Dior ad, in which Charlize Theron's unbridled confidence holds our interest (along with cameos by late Hollywood icons). Granted, it's hard to represent a scent with visuals, but surely they can try harder to stand out? See how many of these you can stomach: Charlize Theron for Dior (dir: Jean-Jacques Annaud) Natalie Portman for Dior (dir: Sofia Coppola) Marion Cotillard for Dior (dir: John Cameron ...

A lengthy list of directors has been released over at Hitfix, finalizing the contenders for the Best Director Nominees. Out of the list, I'm absolutely praying that David O. Russell and Ben Affleck make the cut. Affleck because he's proven to be an exceptionally talented filmmaker (as opposed to actor...eek) and Russell because, in my eyes at least, the man is a genius (Three Kings!). As great as it would be to see that happen, pretty much all these directors are deserved of an award. It should be pretty interesting to see if the Academy acknowledge Scorsese this year, too. The contenders are; Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, Martin Scorsese, Sofia Coppola, David O. Russell, Danny Boyle, Darren Aronofsky, Joel and Ethan Coen, Peter Weir, Lisa Chodolenko, Tim Burton, Tom Hooper, Roman Polanski, Ben Affleck, Clint Eastwood, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, James L. Brooks and John Cameron. Check out the list...

Nothing says the Seventies quite like undead bikers terrorizing a small town, and if you've never seen the 1973 classic UK film Psychomania, then you're in luck as come October Severin Films will be releasing a special edition DVD of the flick directed by Don Sharp.
From the Press Release:
The grooviest zombie biker movie of them all is being exhumed and, after years of shoddy bootlegs and sub-par presentations, is getting the Special Edition treatment from Severin. Psychomania stars Beryl Reed (Beast in the Cellar) and, in his last performance, George Sanders (Village of the Damned), who perfect a formula to return from the grave via some sort of satanic toad worship. Said formula is then used by young Tommy and his biker gang, The Living Dead, who, after offing themselves in a variety of creative ways, free-wheel back from the dead to wreak havoc on a small English town.

It’s grim for Us troops stationed in the Middle East, subjected to a daily diet of IEDs, snipers, cultural misunderstanding and suicide bombers but James Cameron was on hand to remind them that circumstances could be worse, with a screening of Avatar for solders stationed in Bahrain.

- Two weeks after announcing that Nicole Kidman would not be part of the stellar Woody Allen film lineup, the director has finally found his (call) girl. Complete unknown Lucy Punch gets to play alongside folks we already know (Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts and Freida Pinto) in the Mediapro production set to commence lensing this summer in the U.K. No exactly ego-crusher news, Kidman is unable to be on two sets at the same time - she is starring in one of my most anticipated films to see of 2010 in John Cameron-Mitchell's Rabbit Hole. Punch will play a high-priced call girl similar to Ashley Dupre, who was at the center of the scandal that brought down New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer. The actress had a noteworthy supporting role in István Szabó's Being Julia, where she played an actress who gets what she wants

The new Woody Allen film has just lost one of its many stars in its constellation of a cast.
According to Variety, Nicole Kidman has bowed out of the project (which is going to start shooting in London this summer) due to scheduling conflicts.
Instead, she is going to be acting in and producing a film called “Rabbit Hole.” Kidman will be playing opposite Aaron Eckhart in the film directed by John Cameron-Mitchell (who directed the wildly un-mainstream Shortbus and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
With no word on who will replace Kidman, that still leaves Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, Josh Brolin, Freida Pinto and Naomi Watts on board.
Woody Allen’s untitled film will be produced by Steve Tenenbaum, Letty Aronson, and Jaume Roures. Mediapro will finance the film, with Spain’s Imagina International doing the international sales work.

Variety reports that former "Six Feet Under" co-star Patricia Clarkson has signed on for Craig Gillespie's offbeat romantic comedy Lars and the Real Girl. The Emmy-winning actress joins Ryan Gosling and Emily Mortimer in the indie flick about a nebbish guy (Gosling) who falls for a doll he finds on the Internet. The project will be a reunion of sorts for Clarkson, as it was written by "Six Feet" scribe Nancy Oliver. Sidney Kimmel, John Cameron, Sarah Aubrey and William Horberg will produce, with MGM handing distribution. Shooting starts next month in Toronto.
