Gregg Rudloff.
Oscar-winning sound designer David White has written an open letter to his colleagues after reports that the death of renowned re-recording mixer Gregg Rudloff is being treated as a suicide.
Rudloff, who won best sound Academy Awards for George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road, shared with Chris Jenkins and Ben Osmo; The Matrix, shared with John T. Reitz, David E. Campbell and David Lee; and Glory, shared with Donald O. Mitchell, Elliot Tyson and Russell Williams II, died in Los Angeles, aged 63.
White, who won an Oscar for Mad Max: Fury Road, shared with Mark A. Mangini, hailed Rudloff as “an understated colossal giant of the film sound community.”
Miller told If: “Only those privileged to work closely with Gregg Rudloff would know the mastery and brilliance of his work. All who encountered him, however, got to know the brightness of his mind and the elegance of his soul.

Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “Demolition,” a film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Wild”) features a pretty solid cast including Academy Award nominees Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts. It also apparently features a pretty good soundtrack that includes My Morning Jacket, M. Ward and Sufjan Stevens and incorporates classics by Heart, Free and Eric Burdon & The Animals. Beck’s famous musical arranger dad David Campbell shows up too. Abkco Music & Records is releasing the digital soundtrack for Music From the Motion Picture Demolition on April 8. Here’s the film’s synopsis (and you can read our review from the Toronto International Film Festival here). Demolition follows Davis Mitchell (Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker who loses his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father in law, Phil (Chris Cooper), to pull it together Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns.

Maggie Smith in The Lady in the Van.
Deadpool remains on top at the Australian box office after four weeks, ringing up $2.5 million over the weekend.
The profane superhero played by Ryan Reynolds appeared on 281 screens across the country. The Fox outing has now made $37.2 million overall.
The next best, and first among debutants, was The Lady in the Van, starring Maggie Smith as a rather different kind of hero.
The film, directed by Nicholas Hytner and based on Alan Bennett's play about the vagrant who lived in his driveway for decades, took in close to $2.2 million in its first week.
WB's How To Be Single remained steady, dropping thirty-five percent to ring up $1.3 million over the weekend. The Rebel Wilson-starring comedy has now made over $8 million in Australian cinemas.
In its second week, the Coens' Hail, Caesar! dropped forty-seven percent to rake in $673,896, for a cume of close to $2.5 million.

'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl': Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' review: Mostly an enjoyable romp (Oscar Movie Series) Pirate movies were a Hollywood staple for about three decades, from the mid-'20s (The Sea Hawk, The Black Pirate) to the mid-to-late '50s (Moonfleet, The Buccaneer), when the genre, by then mostly relegated to B films, began to die down. Sporadic resurrections in the '80s and '90s turned out to be critical and commercial bombs (Pirates, Cutthroat Island), something that didn't bode well for the Walt Disney Company's $140 million-budgeted film "adaptation" of one of their theme-park rides. But Neptune's mood has apparently improved with the arrival of the new century. He smiled – grinned would be a more appropriate word – on the Gore Verbinski-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,...

"No, that's fame," replies 60 Minutes anchor Mike Wallace (Christopher Plummer). "Fame has a 15-minute half-life. Infamy lasts a little longer." The infamous "things" referred to by Hewitt and Wallace are the series of scandals that erupted in early 1996, when it was revealed that CBS had refused to air an interview with a tobacco company whistleblower because the network feared the (financial) consequences. What Freedom of the Press? Based on Marie Brenner's Vanity Fair article about the events that led up to that embarrassing – and disturbing – incident, The Insider tells the story of scientist Jeffrey Wigand...

Now we know why Jay Z experienced so many emotions when Kanye West almost interrupted Beck's Album of the Year acceptance speech: Beck's dad has collaborated with Beyoncé! Immortal superhuman multi-instrumentalist Beck has a dad, David Campbell, an animal of an arranger, composer, and conductor in his own prolific right. A Reddit user did some album-note spelunking this week to discover that Beyoncé's sophomore solo album B'Day features string arrangements and conducting from none other than Campbell (B'Day snagged Best Contemporary R&B Album, too). Fortunately this was not the case on Beyoncé, otherwise Jay Z would've spontaneously combusted on the spot. Yeezy already apologized, but now this just drives home the point that there should be no drama because not only does Beck respect artistry, he is quite literally the offspring of what West has faithfully stood by as artistry. P.S.: Do you smell the imminent conciliatory Beck-Beyoncé-Kanye collaboration,...

Well, this is a bit awkward. Kanye West stole the show and drew gasps and laughs at the 2015 Grammy Awards when he rushed the stage after Beck won Album of the Year for his 2014 record Morning Phase, marking a pseudo-reenactment of his infamous interruption of Taylor Swift's MTV VMAs acceptance speech. He told E! News after the Grammys that "Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé." The hip-hop star later clarified his remarks and also apologized online. Turns out, Beck, who was born Bek David Campbell, and Beyoncé share a connection—the alternative rocker's father, David Campbell, an arranger,...

Longtime ties! Years before Beck and Beyonce competed at the 2015 Grammys, the two musicians were connected to one another through Beck's composer father David Campbell. At last month's 57th Annual Grammy Awards, Beck won Album of the Year for his Morning Phase record, beating out Beyonce's self-titled celebrated 2013 album, and inspiring a talked-about negative reaction from Kanye West. While West has since walked the comments back and apologized, the rapper voiced his disbelief at the win at the time, saying Beyonce, 33, should have nabbed the [...]...

Beck hasn’t been particularly prolific lately when it comes to new studio music. Sure, he’s been busy recording cover albums, producing artists like Thurston Moore and Charlotte Gainsbourg, and collaborating with McSweeney’s on the “Song Reader” sheet-music project, but it’s been more than five years since the release of 2008’s “Modern Guilt.” That break ends tomorrow (24) with “Morning Phase” tomorrow. The album has been tagged a sequel of sorts to Beck’s popular break-up album, 2002’s “Sea Change.” Rather than a true sequel, that descriptor is more useful as shorthand to let the listener know the album is primarily acoustic; song-oriented rather than beats oriented, and confessional. And, like “Sea Change,” regardless of what else Beck records, it will stand out as a gorgeous milestone in his career. “Morning Phase” is an immersive experience that doesn’t lend itself to parsing individual tracks. It’s meant...

Change is constant in life, and this is seen quite frequently in Doctor Who. Yet this is not just in the change of the main actors, but also in the revolving door of companions, and it all points to one simple truth – it seems no one is destined to stay with the Doctor permanently.
One of the features of modern Doctor Who is that we tend to find out what the companions do with their lives after they leave the Doctor. In classic Doctor Who, however, this wasn’t covered as frequently. Many companions left to start new lives, but we never learned how well those lives went. Here, then, are five classic companions that I would like to see make at least a brief reappearance so we learn what happened to them. This is by no means a definitive list; there are many companions who should come back at least once,...

Cameron's nightmare is that Ukip now owns the potent cocktail of EU-related issues and could split the Eurosceptic right in 2015
Ukip's surge to 28% in Eastleigh, its best ever result in a byelection, leaves the Conservatives scrambling to assess the root causes of Ukip's popularity and whether its cheerful amateur leader Nigel Farage truly has the potential to deprive the oldest political machine in British politics of as many as 40 seats in a general election.
Cameron's nightmare is that Ukip now owns the potent cocktail of EU-related issues, including migration and wage squeeze, and so can split the Eurosceptic right in 2015 – just as the Sdp crippled Labour in the mid-80s. For the first time in a century the Conservative party has lost monopoly control of the right.
Farage is already promising to stand 2,000 candidates in the May county council elections and it is very plausible they will come first in...

Mankind is on the menu… Well, the last time I heard something about this movie, the title was Night Claws, and I think that tagline was something like – living is not an option, or whatever. The most important thing for you to know is that this is actually the same movie which comes from director David A. Prior but now has a completely new title – Apex Predator! Today we have a pretty cool trailer and poster for the whole thing, so make sure you check it out!
So, in case you’re not so familiar with this horror movie, I will first inform you that David A. Prior is also responsible for the script, which he co-wrote with Fabio Soldani. The movie has some interesting cast on board which includes Frank Stallone, Leilani Sarelle, Sherrie Rose, David Campbell, Ted Prior, Tara Sanford Kleinpeter and Alissa Koenig.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have a vision for the future. A future where greatness and dedication are recognized and rewarded. This is why I stand before you today (actually sitting and not in front of anyone) and nominate Don Simpson for Film Critic in the The Austin Chronicle Best of Austin 2012 campaign. [Don-bama] Let's help put an end to the mediocrity and nepotism of election years past. You only have four more days (through 9/10/12) to do your duty and proudly cast your vote as a fan of thoughtful and intellectual film criticism. My plea to you is to click the link below or on the very original campaign image above, and vote for Don Simpson (the hardest working and producing film critic in Austin...maybe the world) under Film Critic. While you're there it would also be very Austin-y, and quite frankly, American of you to vote for Smells Like Screen...

Advertiser Newspapers has launched a campaign to raise the spirits of South Australians after mining giant Bhp Billiton scrapped an expansion plan that would have pumped $20bn into the region.
The newspaper group offered free advertising space to agencies and brands to come up with campaigns promoting the state and spreading positive messages among readers.
Coopers, Bank Sa, Thirsty Camel, Motor Accident Commission, IGA, Elders and Stratco were among advertisers to back the campaign – with 55 agencies sending in creative ideas.
Advertiser Newspapers MD Ish Davies said: “We were disappointed when the news broke but regardless of this South Australia has many more major projects underway and exciting things to be proud of. With the Cbd currently undertaking an exciting transformation, numerous other mining projects, the many festivals just around the corner and recently being unveiled as the fifth most liveable city in the world, why wouldn’t we be happy?...

In this guest posting, David Campbell responds to a comment made at Mumbrella Question Time last week that Melbourne has become ‘the new Adelaide’
Monday’s article on Mumbrella quoting a pitch consultant declaring that Melbourne is the “new Adelaide” sparked some interesting debate. It also upset its fair share of people from Adelaide, unimpressed about again being the butt of a very depressing joke.
Adelaide is a lovely place. But no one is going to argue that it’s the pinnacle of creativity. My guess is Melbourne would prefer not to wear a badge bearing its namesake.
So, as a former member of the Adelaide advertising fraternity, I thought I would offer some sage advice for how Melbourne about how it might avoid becoming too much like us.
Tip #1: Don’t leave all the old people in charge

Them's Mark Wightman, Sarah Mann and Jeff Miller with Fnuky's Jeremy Ervine
Adelaide agency Fnuky has sold to a local rival for an undisclosed sum.
The agency of ten people, which was founded by strategy director Jeremy Ervine and creative director David Campbell eight years ago, has been bought by Them, a full service agency that has been on the acquisition trail in South Australia.
Ervine and Campbell are to leave the business to start a new venture. The Fnuky name will not remain.
The deal brings to an end three months of negotiations between Fnuky and Them, which has been growing quickly by acquisition.
Them bought La Advertising in January and Motown Media last year. It now offers inhouse TV, radio and digital production and media buying as well as advertising and marketing services.
Them was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.
Ervine told Mumbrella: “I’m not a sentimental person.

Need more proof of how loved electro-rockers Muse are in their native UK? Their upcoming new single, “Survival,” has been chosen as the official song for the 2012 Olympic Games, which kick off in London on July 27. The track will be our first taste of Muse’s upcoming sixth studio effort, The 2nd Law.
The song is expected to debut tonight (June 27) on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 radio program at 7:30 p.m. BST. The news was broken earlier today on the band’s official website.
The posting also reveals the new single’s inspiration was the Olympics in the first place: "Matt wrote the song with the Olympics in mind. It's about total conviction and pure determination to win."
The track is expected to get plenty of play throughout the games, so there's no doubt you'll have it memorized by the time of the closing ceremony.

Electro British rockers Muse have been in London working away on their follow-up to ‘09’s The Resistance for quite some time now, and a newly unveiled trailer from the group suggests the new effort – dubbed The 2nd Law – is only a few months away.
The aforementioned trailer contains a montage of news footage against a dramatic musical backdrop, which sounds like your typical over-the-top classically-inspired piece from Muse before it transforms into full-blown dubstep, which is all the more interesting considering the group had mentioned electronic music (Justice, to be exact) as inspiration, but refrained from ever using the term “dubstep.”
As the trailer ends, the music fades out with the following text appearing onscreen: “New Album. The 2nd Law. September 2012.”
Muse basisst Chris Wolstenhome had previously mentioned that their sixth album would be “something radically different,” but their new dubstep-heavy direction is most certainly going to divide the band's fans.

Band's brand-new teaser forecasts a whole new sound on their next album, due out in September
By James Montgomery
Muse's video for 'Second Law'

Muse will return this September with The 2nd Law, an album that — based on what we just saw — seemingly pushes their sound in a whole new direction: namely, dubstep.
That's based on a brand-new teaser trailer that the band premiered Wednesday (June 6), one filled with appropriately apocalyptic imagery (riot-torn streets, smoke-riddled landscapes, dour newscasters) and subtext (Industrialism! Capitalism! Terrorism!) and, of course, the now-familiar knotted electronics and wub-wub-wubbing basslines of dubstep.
And we're not the only ones who seem to be picking up on it, either. Since the trailer's premiere, fans have been flooding YouTube with comments that run the gamut from "Muse ... Dupstep ... Wtf" to "Muse Dubstep? It'll be awesome because it's Muse" (can't argue with logic like that). The new...

English electro-rockers Muse received a warm embrace in their Devon hometown of Teignmouth in England over the weekend as the trio got the opportunity to carry the Olympic torch with thousands of fans watching.
The crowd was limited to just 7,000 rabid fans (a number stipulated by police), who watched as the group carried the flame over Shaldon Brige into Teignmouth – a local landmark – on day two of the torch’s 70-day journey to the big games.
All members – Matthew Bellamy, Christopher Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard – got the chance to run with the torch. A total of 121 people were utilized to help carry the flame from Plymouth to Exeter, according to a BBC News report.

Dmg Radio Australia has today confirmed another rebrand of its second stations in Sydney and Melbourne as smoothfm, which will follow an easy listening “more music and less talk” format. The radio company believes it has identified a significant gap in the market for the format.
The move is another radical change of direction for the stations, which were branded as Vega Radio until March 2010.
The final set of radio ratings for the two Vega stations saw an audience share of 3.4% in Sydney and 3.7% in Melbourne.
The two stations then unsuccessfully relaunched as Classic Rock in an attempt to take on Austereo’s Triple M. However, audience share failed to improve significantly, hovering around 3.6% in both markets.
A year ago, Dmg quietly dropped the Classic Rock brand and moved to the more neutral Sydney’s 95.3 FM and Melbourne’s 91.5Fm, along with the positioning “Classic songs. Classic rock.”

So what were the top films of 2011? It's a really tough question to ask, and a pretty bold one to answer among peers with equally strong opinions. I've been reading through a lot of the 2011 film retrospectives, top 10's, and best of lists with many critics complaining about 2011 being a light year for great film. I personally disagree. Sure the mega-plexes didn't offer much substance in 2011, but cheer up Charlie because if you stuck close to the arthouse theaters then you found the golden tickets. The nominations and votes of the Smells Like Screen Spirit staff have been tallied and scored to represent the collective opinion of the total results. As always we encourage you to agree or debate in the comments section; so without further ado I give you Smells Like Screen Spirit's Top 10 Films of 2011: 10. Bellflower "Painfully discussing the highs and lows of love, as well...

Morgan Freeman, Dolphin Tale Morgan Freeman Accuses Tea Party of Racism: Dolphin Tale Box Office Affected? As for Morgan Freeman's remarks affecting Dolphin Tale's box office results on opening weekend, Kosove wrote Deadline.com's Nikki Finke that he did "not believe it affected Dolphin Tale's gross by even one dollar!" Kosove then proceeded to distance himself from Freeman's remarks, stating that "I do not share Morgan’s view and do not believe this kind of harsh partianship [sic] by either end of politcal spectrum is helpful in these very difficult times." He then added that "as a person who has some libertarian viewpoints myself," he "strongly" believed in Freeman's "right to express whatever beliefs he has on any topic." He ended his comment with the usual "this is a free country." Of course, whatever actually happened behind closed doors at Alcon and Warner Bros. may have been something else altogether,...

Austin2Angkor is a group of six volunteers with a goal of raising $50,000, with the support from the kind folks at Edge of Seven, through events, corporate sponsorships and generous donations to help the Build Your Future Today (Bft) Center in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The project started when my good friend Roni traveled around Southeast Asia for two months and absolutely fell in love with the country. She graciously volunteered her time at Bft teaching a group of children how to sing the Star-Spangled Banner. Following the genocide committed by the Khmer Rouge...

Just a quick little column this week, guys, just a collection of my thoughts. Some about comics, some not. Call it a walk into Mindy’s brain. And don’t forget to duck.
• Spent three hours today at the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles renewing my license. Last time I renewed it, I was in and out in 20 minutes. Why did it take so long? Two words: Walking Beachball. (Actually I was going to say Fat Fuck, but I didn’t want to offend anybody.) That’s right, I’m talking about New Jersey’s Governor Chris Christie. For a while at the Dmv I occupied myself looking at the latest Ikea catalogue. Then I started talking to some of the nice people who work there. (Now that’s a job in hell! Compared to working at the Dmv, Buffy’s stint at the Doublemeat Palace was being the Queen of England.

Director: Jason Eisener Writers: Jason Eisener, John Davies, Rob Cotterill Starring: Rutger Hauer, Gregory Smith, Molly Dunsworth, Brian Downey, Nick Bateman I really did not want to pile onto the "I hate Hobo with a Shotgun" bandwagon, especially since Dave Campbell (Smells Like Screen Spirit's Editor-in-Chief) and I seem to be the only ones riding on it. (In case you missed it, here is Dave's review of Hobo with a Shotgun.) I typically do not read reviews of films before I write my own, but in this instance I read everything that has been published (to date) on IMDb.com and Rotten Tomatoes; and, I have to admit, I really do not understand why so many people are raving about it.
