CatchCon 2011 was the highlight in Seattle this past weekend, and we were there to take it all in.Briefly, a few tidbits learned this weekend. Captain Keith Colburn (F/V Wizard) would have been a saucier in a fine Auguste Escoffier trained proper kitchen if he didn't crab fish, and he knows who Escoffier is! 'Wild Bill' Wichrowski loves to wear sandals even in cold rainy Seattle and has a rocking Mexico tan, giving him a bit of a Hemingway vibe. photo by April MacIntyre ©M&C Scott Campbell (F/V Seabrooke) and Andy Hillstrand (F/V Time Bandit) love "Sons of Anarchy" on FX and Hillstrand copped to liking "American Idol" too. One of the surprises for me yesterday in Seattle at the pre-CatchCon roundtable of Captains Sig Hansen, Keith Colburn, "Wild" Bill Wichrowski, Andy Hillstrand, Johnathan Hillstrand, Derrick Ray, Scott Campbell and the late Phil Harris' sons Josh Harris and Jake Harris was their response when asked about their favorite TV shows they watched. "Sons of Anarchy" was a top of the list drama for the Discovery docu-series stars who loved the show's sensibilities and action. FX's biker drama has steadily climbed in ratings and interest, and promises to deliver a season that will continue the saga of Gemma Teller-Morrow's extended family that features the love affair between her son Jax (Charlie Hunnam) and his high school sweetheart-turned-medical...

'Deadliest Catch' is what reality TV should be. What's more real than seeing the truly dark side of a very perilous job -- a job that needs no added drama manufactured for TV's sake? On this show, people's lives are actually in danger.
Last season was a tough one for the king crab fishermen, with the untimely death of one of their own, Cornelia Marie captain Phil Harris. Season 7 (premiering Tuesday, April 12, 9Pm Et on Discovery) looks to be a year of fresh starts and new blood, including two new captains: Scott Campbell, Jr of the Seabrooke and Elliot Neese of the Ramblin' Rose.
This Saturday, April 9, fans will get a chance to meet the new guys, hear from the veterans and get a sneak peek at the new season before it premieres thanks to CatchCon, the show's own fan convention...

[1] I wasn't planning to write about Gallery1988's first annual "Is This Thing On" art show as it really has little connection to movies or television (or so I thought... the above piece featuring Judd Apatow mashed-up with the infamous Star Trek Tribbles episode is a fine example of this). The show, co-sponsored by FunnyOrDie, features over 100 artists, each creating pieces that are portraits of their favorite funny people, both beloved comics of yesteryear and emerging superstars. The line up of comedians depicted include: Chris Farley, Will Ferrel, Richard Pryor, Don Rickles, Paul Reubens,Tim & Eric, Nick Kroll, Demetri Martin, Chris Rock, Whitney Cummings, Jon Lovitz, Sam Kinison, Bill Murray, Woody Allen, Colin Quinn, Bill Hicks, Howard Stern, Judd Apatow, Chris Hardwick, Marc Maron, Scott Auckerman, David Spade, Andy Dick, Lenny Bruce, Adam Sandler, Amy Sedaris, Lisa Lampanelli, David Cross, Andy Kaufman, Christopher Guest, Mr. Show, Rob Corddry and Children's Hospital,...

Mr. T Drawing Day. It all started innocently enough. "Mr. T is incredibly hard to draw, you guys," tweeted artist Scott Campbell (@scottlava on Twitter, perhaps best known for 'Great Showdowns'). Minutes later he threw down the gauntlet: "Let's see your Mr. T's! Let's make this Mr. T drawing day!"
And with that a hashtag and a holiday were born. I jumped on it immediately, urging friends to get in on #MrTDrawingDay, and while a couple of folks I know participated, it paled in comparison to the amount of interest Campbell himself was able to work up. He's got all sorts of Mr. T's now -- stick figures, hilarious sketches, minimalist cartoons, and off-beat puns. He's got everything but a Mr. T by Mr. T himself.
Consider this your digital Louvre, filled with priceless Mr. T portraits. For your pleasure, I've included all...

This past weekend saw the All Tomorrow’s Parties music and film festival head up to Monticello, New York. Criterion alum, Jim Jarmusch, curated the music for the festival, which saw the likes of Sonic Youth, Iggy and the Stooges, and Explosions In The Sky take the various stages. If you had some down time between bands, you could spend some time watching 22 films that Criterion brought with them for the festival.
As we’ve previously highlighted, Criterion commissioned several independent comic book artists to create movie posters for all of the films. We’ve already shown you the posters for Brute Force, Touchez Pas Au Grisbi, and Night of the Hunter, and have been eagerly awaiting some images of the various other posters.
Today on their Facebook page, Criterion took a snapshot of the entire line-up, which I’m embedding below:

If you've been reading /Film for a while, then you know that I love good movie-inspired art. And the superbowl of movie art is Crazy4Cult, an art show put on every year by Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. This year's show will open on July 9th, and we have seen the first batch of artwork premiere online. For years I've been writing about the show, and posting and buying the art online. I'm super excited because this year I'll be able to attend the event since I now live in Los Angeles. Last week I posted the first compilation of the artwork from the show, including new pieces from Eric Tan, Dave Perillo, Tom Whalen and more. Click here to see Part 1! Today I've returned to bring you a collection of art pieces which have since come online. Believe me, if you like movie art, hit the jump! Scott Campbell...

According to Scott Campbell, the greatest showdown in Die Hard isn't John McClane facing off against Hans Gruber -- it's McClane versus a grinning mass of glass shards. That showdown, and many more, are represented as paintings on Campbell's site -- The Great Showdowns. It's a lighter look at some of the most memorable face-offs in film history.
Campbell places a quote with each image, but not the titles of the film, sometimes turning the more obscure match-ups into a guessing game amongst the visitors to his site. My personal favorites are some of the less obvious pieces. When I recognized the King of Kong piece (after staring at it for a couple of seconds), I felt like I'd solved a little puzzle and patted myself on the back. Good job, me.

David Jaffe can be a tease from time to time on his blog, but when hinted about a new Twisted Metal game many months ago, he wasn't just blowing smoke. A real-life truck full of psychotic clown accompanied him during a presentation today that featured an official unveiling of "Twisted Metal" for the PlayStation 3.

The game will arrive in 2011, and Jaffe came prepared with an extended multiplayer demo to show off.

When Danger Girl hit the stands in 1998, I was 15 years old (read: target audience). I was given the first issue for free in what had to have been one of the strangest comic book store experiences of my life (which includes a staggering level of strange comic book store experiences). I was on vacation with my family and stopped at a store in the middle of nowhere. The owner (who, I kid you not, wore an eye patch) looked both ways to make sure my parents weren't looking, held up the comic and winked (with his one good eye), slipping the issue discreetly into the pile I was buying. There was a silent, "I dig it, kid. You want this." Days like today, my thoughts drift back to that bizarre patron saint of relatively tame teenage T&A.

The organization has raised over $175 million since they were founded 18 years ago -- this year they expect to raise between $3.5-5 million. "Our theme and focus always remains the same, which is to do the best we can to raise as much money [as possible] to support the issue of HIV and help us to expand our ability to support projects around the world," Campbell said. Comic-book biographies of presidential candidates are nothing new; the Democratic Party published one in 1948 to sing the praises of Harry S. Truman, noting his boyhood ability to plow the straightest furrow in the county. The modern version for the 2008 race, Presidential Material Flipbook, was produced without the assistance of either contender's campaign; the writers (Angel and Desperadoes writer Jeff Mariotte handled Obama, former DC comics editor Andy Helfer took McCain) relied on news reports and the candidates' own books. In spite of the heroic poses on J. Scott Campbell's covers, both text-heavy tales have more facts than action. Both stories—also available for mobile-phone downloads and as separate books for readers who refuse to reach across the aisle—stay mostly fair and balanced, amounting to a pair of presidential-biography Cliffs Notes. Considering how ugly and divisive the race has become, that isn't bad. But more action or at least.
