If you don't rewatch "Dirty Dancing" every time it's on Bravo (like I do), your memories of the film might be a bit hazy. Everyone remembers Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze's crackling chemistry and incredibly romantic dancing - and, of course, the famous line "No one puts Baby in a corner." But you might have forgotten that the story's inciting incident involves an unplanned pregnancy, an illegal abortion, and a poignant message about the importance of reproductive rights.
The story opens in the summer of 1963. Grey plays Baby, the eldest daughter of Dr. Jake and Marjorie Houseman (Jerry Orbach and Kelly Bishop). Her family is spending the summer at the Kellerman's resort in the Catskills in upstate New York, and Baby feels a bit like an outsider among the other guests - who are mostly older - and among the Ivy League waitstaff, who flirt with all the guests' daughters.

Nobody should make a Dirty Dancing reboot…
But if you're going to, do it right.
Before you read any further, know that I really did try to give ABC's musical adaptation a chance, I did. There have been plenty of remakes of classical hits over the past few years -- some which were not so great, but others, like Grease: Live, that were wonderfully done and satisfied almost all of the viewers who tuned in. Of course, whenever you hear the news that one of your favorite movies of All Time is going to be remade, there's that moment of excitement -- "Yes! I am pumped for this!" -- followed by fear -- "Wait, what if this goes terribly wrong?"

So after hearing who would take on the beloved roles of Patrick Swayze's Johnny Castle (newcomer Colt Prattes) and Jennifer Grey's Baby Houseman (Little Miss Sunshine herself, Abigail Breslin), I told...

As the hit musical Dirty Dancing prepares to go on tour, our reporter joins young hopefuls at open auditions, and asks how a low-budget film became 'a cultural event that lasted decades'
You could probably argue that Flashdance is the better film, but it is Dirty Dancing that captured our collective heart. They call it "Star Wars for girls". It's not much on paper: a family goes on holiday, and its late-teenage daughters fall in love, one with a good'un – Patrick Swayze on career-defining form – and one with a bad sort. Steamy dancing occurs, that's the main thing. When the stage version opened in 2006, it had the highest pre-sell in West End history. Now, they're holding open auditions in the regions, for the national tour.
At 7.15 on Thursday morning, there is a snake of girls standing outside a dance studio in Edinburgh, standing in first position from muscle memory, wearing...

Some directors burst out of the gate with fully formed visions and debuts that set Sundance aflame. Others take longer to firm up their perspectives and filmmaking identity. (And, of course, many, many others don't get going at all.) "Your Early Work" is an occasional feature in which we'll take a look at an established auteur's first movie and how it fits in with or foreshadows the ones he or she made down the line.
First up, Todd Solondz, whose new film "Life During Wartime" opened on Friday.
"Fear, Anxiety & Depression" (1989)
Directed by Todd Solondz
These days, it's almost inconceivable to picture Todd Solondz, the premiere '90s maestro of deadpan misery, putting himself front and center on screen. For Solondz to subject himself to the same unflinching (if non-judgmental) gaze he's centered on countless characters, not to mention the humiliations, awkwardness and despair which make up their day-to-day, would...
