“Our Town With Unions”
By Raymond Benson
This is a little-known gem of a film from producer Louis de Rochemont, the man best known for introducing The March of Time documentary newsreels to cinemas that ran from the 1930s until the early 1950s. He also produced several mainstream pictures, and one of these from 1951, The Whistle at Eaton Falls, is an underdog-battles-severe-odds tale of the highest caliber.
Directed by Robert Siodmak and starring Lloyd Bridges, Whistle might be described as Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, only with unions. Yes, this is a union drama along the lines of On the Waterfront or, much later, Norma Rae.
In a tight 96 minutes, Siodmak brings us a riveting story—the kind that gets an audience riled up against the injustices thrown at a protagonist. The suspense builds to a breaking point as we wonder how it...

TCM premiered a welcome restoration of this honorable Louis de Rochemont drama last year, and now it’s on a pristine-quality Blu-ray. Almost an ‘anti- film noir,’ the story of a labor conflict in a tiny New England hamlet is a docu-drama that actually has a positive, if not Utopian, ending. Fine direction by Robert Siodmak breathes life into the thesis that Yankee ingenuity and ethical fair play can still save the day. A superb underdog cast — Lloyd Bridges, Carleton Carpenter, Murray Hamilton, James Westerfield, Lenore Lonergan, Russell Hardie, Helen Shields, Doro Merande, Diana Douglas, Anne Francis, Ernest Borgnine, Arthur O’Connell and even Dorothy Gish — bring this odd ‘Pepperidge Farms’ neo-realist tale to life.

Carleton Carpenter, an actor whose lanky, aw-shucks cornpone good looks made him a familiar supporting presence opposite such leading ladies as Debbie Reynolds, Judy Garland and Elizabeth Taylor throughout the 1950s, died today in Warwick, New York, following years of declining health. He was 95.
His death was announced by spokesperson Kevin McAnarney.
Born Carleton Upham Carpenter in Bennington, Vermont, Carpenter served as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy during World War II, helping to build the airstrip from which the Enola Gay would later take off for its flight to Hiroshima. By the time of the 1945 atomic bombing, Carpenter had started his Broadway career with a role in David Merrick’s 1944 production Bright Boy.
Other Broadway roles would arrive in quick succession: Carpenter appeared in Three to Make Ready with Ray Bolger (1944), The Magic Touch (1947), John Murray Anderson’s Almanac (1953) and Hotel Paradiso (1957).
Carpenter’s TV and film credits developed alongside his stage career.

It’s another CineSavant Revival Screening Review of a show not presently available on disc: not an old favorite, but something we admittedly never heard of … a marvelous 1951 film that’s seemingly been hiding under the carpet for sixty years, despite being directed by Robert Siodmak and starring Lloyd Bridges, Dorothy Gish, Carleton Carpenter, Murray Hamilton, Diana Douglas, Anne Francis, Ernest Borgnine and Arthur O’Connell. At first we fear it will be another angry midcentury indictment of free enterprise … but it becomes something else entirely. The unusual near- neorealist picture was filmed on location in a New Hampshire mill town; it is newly restored and hopefully destined for Blu-ray soon.

I don’t know if Garland fans still go around chanting ‘Judy Judy Judy’ at her every appearance, but they do have a timeless song ‘n’ dance number to celebrate here. Her last MGM movie is only a so-so vehicle but Gene Kelly and the studio’s top music & dance talent work hard to put it over the top. Garland’s lack of stability is still an issue. For much of the movie she looks visibly overweight, yet in the showstopper ‘Get Happy’ she suddenly slims down to the best — maybe not the healthiest — look of her career.

Submarine movie evening: Underwater war waged in TCM's Memorial Day films In the U.S., Turner Classic Movies has gone all red, white, and blue this 2017 Memorial Day weekend, presenting a few dozen Hollywood movies set during some of the numerous wars in which the U.S. has been involved around the globe during the last century or so. On Memorial Day proper, TCM is offering a submarine movie evening. More on that further below. But first it's good to remember that although war has, to put it mildly, serious consequences for all involved, it can be particularly brutal on civilians – whether male or female; young or old; saintly or devilish; no matter the nationality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or any other label used in order to, figuratively or literally, split apart human beings. Just this past Sunday, the Pentagon chief announced that civilian deaths should be anticipated as “a...

Billie Lourd took to Instagram Saturday to pay a special tribute to her late grandmother Debbie Reynolds. The day would have marked the Hollywood icon's 85th birthday. Debbie died last December, days after her daughter and Billie's mother, Carrie Fisher, who was 60. "Happy 85th to my constantly classily clad Abadaba," Billie wrote on Instagram, alongside a candid photo of her mom and grandmother inside a hotel room. Debbie is wearing an emerald green pants and matching duster and black top, while Carrie sports a multi-colored printed scarf over a black outfit. Debbie's nickname comes from her Carleton Carpenter's hit cover of the song "Aba Daba...

2016 claimed a long list of entertainers, but the grim reaper’s most unexpected one-two punch came between the final two holidays with the death of movie icons Carrie Fisher on December 12 and her mother Debbie Reynolds a mere 36 hours later. With the premiere of the documentary about the pair, “Bright Lights” on HBO this weekend, we at the Geeks site thought we should take a look at their considerable contributions to film.
Let’s start with Carrie, who was born in Hollywood, USA on October 21, 1956, the daughter of Debbie and singer/actor Eddie Fisher. She appeared on stage with her mother throughout the late 60’s and early 70’s, even getting her first small screen credit in the 1969 TV movie “Debbie Reynolds and the Sound of Children”. It wasn’t until 1975, when she would make her big screen debut opposite Warren Beatty (quite an arrival) in Hal Ashby’s hit Shampoo.

Debbie Reynolds, who died on Wednesday at the age of 84, was one of the last icons of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Throughout her nearly seven decade career, Reynolds made a name for herself as a triple-threat singer, dancer, and actor — with roles in big-screen MGM musicals and Broadway shows. She was also chart-topping recording artist and dynamic live performer, who toured the country for years as a night club entertainer.
Music was an inescapable part of Reynolds career. Here are 11 of her best musical moments.

Debbie Reynolds sang and danced her way into film history “Three Little Words” (1950) Fresh out of high school, Debbie Reynolds was given a small role in this Fred Astaire, Red Skelton and Carleton Carpenter MGM musical, sang an old standard (“I Wanna Be Loved By You”) and shot to fame. “Two Weeks With Love” (1950) Reynolds reunited with Carleton Carpenter to sing the 1914 song “Aba Daba Honeymoon.” The song became such a hit that MGM sent the duo touring the country to promote it and the film. “Singin’ in the Rain” (1952) The movie that made Reynolds a star and is still considered.

Debbie Reynolds — the star of Singin' in the Rain who died Wednesday (Dec. 28) at age 84, just one day after losing her daughter Carrie Fisher — forged a notable run on Billboard's songs and albums charts starting in the early 1950s.

Exactly a month ago today, I was at the Beverly Hills home of Richard Sherman, 83, one half of the great “Sherman brothers” who were the only songwriters ever put under contract by Walt Disney. (Richard’s brother Robert Sherman is now 85 and lives in London.) Over the course of a two-hour interview for a book that I’m writing about film history, Sherman regaled me with stories about the evoltuion of some of the most famous and beloved songs of our time — “It’s a Small World” (for the 1964 New York World’s Fair), “A Spoonful of Sugar” (1964, for “Mary Poppins”), “I Wan’na Be Like You” (1967, for “The Jungle Book”), and the list goes on and on.
One song that I was particularly curious to learn the origin of was “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” (1964, also for “Mary Poppins”) — how in the world, I asked Sherman, did he and his brother manage to...
