Netflix’s list of films premiering on the streaming service in 2023 isn’t nearly as long as their ambitious 2022 film slate. Yet even with a slimmed-down slate, the lineup of movies arriving this year is impressive and checks off nearly every genre.
The streamer will be dipping back into familiar territory with sequels to Murder Mystery and Extraction. Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind, and David Yates’ The Pain Hustlers will premiere this year, as will the film continuation of Luther starring Idris Elba. And two romantic comedies with big-name casts made their way into the lineup: Your Place or Mine (Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon) and A Family Affair.
Netflix’s announcement of their 2023 film slate was accompanied by a trailer showcasing 16 titles including You People, The Mother, Heart of Stone, The Killer, and Leo.

There’s a big conversation happening about diversity and gender equality in film and the Whistler Film Festival is helping to fan the flames.
The fest, which runs Nov. 28 to Dec. 2, launched its Women on Top series a couple of years ago, when about 100 women ascended the top of the Whistler mountain to have breakfast with Canada Media Fund’s president & CEO Valerie Creighton.
Last year’s guest was Susan Cartsonis, film producer and co-founder of Resonate Entertainment. The goal was to bring inspiring women to speak about issues relating to representation.
“We need to create content that reflects society and includes a gender and diversity pass from script to screen to production,” says the festival’s executive director Shauna Hardy Mishaw. “If we want to change the story, it has to start with the story. Women deserve to work in a safe and equitable environment, and we need to...

Things seem to be working out for them until a railroad detective (Tim Blake Nelson) starts sniffing around.
Written by Shelby Farrell, “Deidra & Laney Rob a Train” also co-stars Sasheer Zamata, David Sullivan, Missi Pyle, Arturo Castro, Brooke Markham and Sharon Lawrence.

A Warner Bros. executive has called for more scripts written by women writers to help correct the film industry’s gender imbalance.
Speaking on a panel at the Toronto International Film Festival about financing female-led features, Niija Kuykendall, VP of production at Warner Bros Pictures, said: “I don’t get a lot of material come my way from women.
“There needs to be more agents and managers who are continuously putting script from female writers in front of me.”
Pointing to positive change, Kuykendall highlighted an increase in females running the show on Warner Brothers projects such as Denise Di Novi’s upcoming directorial debut Unforgettable - a film directed, produced, co-written and starring women.
She also referred to Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck and Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, continuing: “It’s not perfect by any means, but change is happening. There does seems to be a greater landscape of female filmmakers getting involved on bigger films.”

The deal comes as CBS Films retracts its distribution activity. As part of the arrangement, Lionsgate takes exclusive international sales rights.
The multi-year agreement kicks off in 2015 with teen comedy The Duff, which Sierra/Affinity is selling internationally according to a prior agreement.
CBS Films will continue to acquire, produce and self-distribute its own limited releases.
“Making movies is only half of the equation – today’s marketplace demands a strategic approach to marketing and distribution that is fluid and creative, and no company has demonstrated more vision and innovation than Lionsgate,” said CBS Films president Terry Press.
“As we build our home-grown slate and expand our efforts in the acquisition space, we’re thrilled to partner with the outstanding Lionsgate team on a plan that provides the flexibility to handle these ambitions.”
“CBS Films has emerged as a creative force that will serve as a commercially exciting and reliable source of quality mainstream theatrical releases for years...
